What's your favourite Gameboy game? Advance also welcome.
I've been collecting all the old Gameboy games I wanted as a kid, I have most of the mainstream ones I want, but I'm especially interested in obscure titles.

My first Game Boy was an Advance, so I've been going back and playing the.original Game Boy's games.
Metroid II was great. I'm halfway through Link's Awakening - the gameplay is really good but I wish it didn't have so many Mario cameos, it cheapens the fantasy setting.

i wish i could be epic and not say pokemon but as someone born in 1991 it changed the way i thought about video games

beforehand i only saw the aesthetic value of video games, which at the time was a much worse and far more limited cartoon. action figures were superior, and if ANYTHING worth watching was on it was better than some stupid game. i would unironically watch the adventures of sonic over playing the actual sonic games any day.

but i felt pressured to play the pokemon game and pressured to beat it. almost dropped it within 60 seconds because regular games about jumping are bad enough, but a game about talking??!! this shit was my fucking birthday present, i got robbed! but forced myself to get my moneys worth and actually spent quality time with a game for once. learned the actual act of playing them was mechanically rewarding. the kind of thing my dad will never comprehend to his grave.

after that i liked kirby a lot. donkey kong was fun (not land, fuck those games). gameboy games were worth cents at the time so i had a lot of shovelware with gems mixed in, like batman, tmnt, and darkwing duck.

Outside of the Super Mario Land duo that were bundled in with my original DMG (was a very nice bundle with a Yellow DMG, the two games and a pretty sizeable carry case), my first Game Boy game was Links Awakening and it still stands as my favourite game on the system. The first two Pokemon generations are also top tier, to me.

Nowadays I play on a AGS-101 screen modded GBA, which is just gorgeous. (Pic related, I recently reshelled it and added some aethetic as fuck purple/blue buttons and trim to it)

When I was a kid, it was picrel or maybe Pokemon Red. Now it's Link's Awakening.

>> No.9014524

The GBC was my first game system ever, my parents were always super anti-video games until then. I was weirdly oblivious to what was popular when I had a gameboy as a kid, so I didn't play any of the Mario Land or Zelda games until years later.
Either way, loved:
Pokemon TCG
Mario Golf
Legend of the River King
Harvest Moon

I also played Pokemon Red, Yellow, and Gold
Pokemon Red blew my little mind, I had never played a game you could explore like that, with multiple cities and secret areas and what not, most of what I had played before the gameboy was PC crap like Rat Poker and Pipe Dream so the idea that a game could have an entire world was a completely new concept to me.

Super Robot Pinball
Banishing Racer
Chalvo 55
Crayon Shin-Chan 4
For The Frog The Bell Tolls
Ganbare Goemon - Hoshizorashi Dynamite
Keitai Denjuu Telefang
Mobile Golf
Pokémon Trading Card Game 2
Pop'n Music GB - Animation Melody
Sakura Wars GB
Samurai Kid
Star Ocean - Blue Sphere
Survival Kids 2 - Dasshutsu!! Futago Shima!
Sylvanian Melodies - Mori no Nakama to Odori Masho!

Most of these, I think, have English translations out now.

>I wish it didn't have so many Mario cameos
A Link to the Past also had a few Mario cameos, it was just how games used to be, SOVL and all.
And given that the remake is a toy/cartoon style, it feels like they were (and are) trying to avoid making a Zelda game that's too adult again. Twilight Princess was dark, but it wasn't actually a depressing game. Majora's Mask and Link's Awakening are much sadder games, and Nintendo seems to be trying to avoid making a game like that with their main IPs.
>>9014263
For GB/GBC

The thing is with that diorama graphic style, it only applies with the actual ingame graphics. The cutscenes that take place in the "real world" actually do look like how an actual proper Zelda anime would look if Nintendo weren't cowards.

Here's a handful for you.
Mega Man III, IV and V are really good. Especially V.
Kirby's Block Ball is a fun break-out style game with Kirby elements.
Lufia: The Legend Returns is a great rpg, long as you don't mind all of the "randomized" dungeons being exactly the same but with palette swaps. Has a nice soundtrack, too.
The remake of Shining Force on the GBA is good, the story is a lot more fleshed out too, and the music is surprisingly good quality for GBA, though I think the original Genesis version has more charm to it.

I came to /vr/ a year or so ago and it was littered with gameboy threads. Today this is the only one I found. What happened? Does nobody on /vr/ care about gameboys anymore or did mods just get rid of most threads.

Also, play Shrek: Hassle at the Castle and Reekin' Havok by SNK. They are brutally difficult and look great. Don't tell anyone however. They are actual hidden gems and it would be great if they stayed as cheap as they are now.
