How is it possible a 700 mb game from the year i was born 1998, can have so much more charisma than todays 74840TB super productions? i feel like the devs had passion and didnt limit themselves with cheap morals, the what could people say completely killed this art. Game were archetypical, simple yet deep. I feel like i will buy more classics, can you give me recommendations boomers?

A big part of why thief has the personality it does is that you're dropped into a location with only a simple, non reactive map. This makes the progression of the level feel more organic but also gives you a fun little bit of gameplanning in the beginning to figure out your approach that in a modern game would likely be made redundant by UI features. I hope the mega AAA success of from titles might inspire other devs to take a second look at the QOL dogma.

Modern AAA has been using identify politics to obfuscate how shit their games are with journalists and twitter for marketing for years. Blizzard even has a tool they use to quantify how woke their characters are so they can ram 100k micro-transactions in Diablo Immortal hoping obese losers on Twitter will defend them.

>>9011329
Call of Cthulhu is like Vampire the Masquerade Bloodline. It bounces back and forth between 11/10 to being dumpster trash. All because of a really troubled development cycle. The PC port was done by literally one guy so it's got double helpings of the jank.

If you're looking for games that bleed soul and atmosphere.

Deus Ex is very good. You can play it Vanilla.
Call of Cthulhu on GOG comes pre-patched I think. It might not even run on Steam. It's very jank.
Alone in the Dark might not give you what you want.

Other games to consider:
Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl - There is a complete mod that makes the game easier. I was able to play it vanilla fine. If it doesn't work there's the zone reclamation mod. Play on the hardest difficulty because the difficulty scaling is fucked and makes the game more tedious on easier ones.
Stalker: Call of Pripyat - It's way more polished than SoC but it also doesn't have as strong atmosphere. Play SoC first
System Shock 1 - Made by the Thief devs. The UI has a learning curve but once you get over it and past the first few shitty levels it becomes amazing. The game just grabs you by the balls out of nowhere and SHODAN is at her best here.
System Shock 2 - It's in the Thief engine so you might spot some similarities. It has way stronger atmosphere than SS1 but feels slightly less alive for some reason. The RPG system might throw you off, if you get some hacking and standard weapons you can't go wrong.
Vampire the Masquerade - It's barely finished but the parts that are finished are some of the best shit in gaming. You need the fan mod that fixes a ton of bugs and even then it'll still be kinda jank.
Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen - It's an adventure that just bleeds soul. Kain is an amazing narrator.
Blood - It's not as atmospheric as the other games but it's style, execution and balance are great. It has a STEEP learning curve but once you get over it the feeling is sublime.
Arx Fatalis - Made by the Dishonored devs but it is a completely different game. Very very slow paced. Very thief-like in it's atmosphere and sound design. The world is extremely interactive and the magic system is pretty deep. Use the Arx Liberatis patch and go a mage.

All those games I listed are like that. Maybe Blood is too similar to boomer shooters on the surface but it still has a very distinct weird vibe to it and weird gameplay you wont see anywhere else. Call of Pripyat maybe is too similar to Shadow of Chernobyl so I probably shouldn't have listed it.
Bottom line is all of those games bleed atmosphere and have their own vibe that has never been recreated, which is what I assume you mean from soul art charisma and concepts. The best you have is indies trying to copy them but failing. If I had to pick 1 from that does it the strongest it'd probably be Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl. Then System Shock 1 because it was like Thief in that it left me longing for a better time even though I only played it last year. V:TMB would probably be #3 because every aspect of the game has so much personality but it's hard to recommend because the devs went bankrupt making it.

It's not entirely the companies fault and it's not entirely to cover up the games short comings. If they are publicly traded then they need to maintain their ESG score which a lot of stock trading tools base their investments off of. If they don't toe the woke line it'll fall and their stock will get hammered.

Fuck, that's some good list if I ever saw one. Deus Ex and System Shock are pinnacle of late dark-cyberpunk, there's nothing out there like these two and there's a chance nothing will ever be.
Let me add some:
Severance: Blade of Darkness - for some reason, for me it feels very close to Arx Fatalis, even though there two games are very different. Siblings in soul, perhaps. Also, year 2001, so technically /vr/.
Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi - only will take you an evening to complete it, but it is extremely replayable and awesome FPS vampire killer. The final cutscene is 110% badass.
The Final Station - if you like Stalker, you should probably try this one. Once again, these are very different games, but The Final Station is heavily influenced by Strugatsky brothers' novels, and therefore contains one-of-a-kind atmosphere.

Because the technology was limited, so they couldn't sell the games based solely on gimmicks like hyper-realism and VR. They were forced to make the gameplay good.

Best game I can think of recently that had a qol reduction to it's benefit was kingdom come deliverance. They had a fast travel system, but it would show your character on the map, move time forward so you could fail quests, and if your character ran into brigands or whoever you would stop and fight or try to run.
I ended up riding or running everywhere anyway for most of the game. The map was only use for short travels.

another thing worth saying is that just because a game doesn't beat you over the head with a solution doesn't mean it needs to be an autism simulator. It'd be enough just for the devs to have a little gamesmansip and make you work a bit to find the path they've laid out for you.
