Let’s talk Star Fox 2. I finally got the hang of the game enough to beat it on hard. On one hand it’s an incredibly innovative and daring sequel, it’s highly challenging and it really feels like you’re fighting a full blown war. On the other hand, I’m in complete anxiety the whole time I’m playing it and I’m not sure I can really call that “fun.”

What do you think /vr/? Is it a good game? Did any of you beat it on expert?

I just started playing recently after I started mooching off of my friends' NSO family plan.

I love it. As a relative newcomer to Star Fox (I only started getting into it because of "A Fox in Space"), it's barely number 2 (under SF64) in my favorites of the franchise. If it received some sort of fan-remake in the Star Fox 64 engine or something, it would absolutely be my favorite one. The framerate makes it very tricky to play at times, but I'm able to adapt.

Something really interesting that I noticed is how the Arwing Walker segments remind me of a Ocarina of Time oddly enough. The way the camera moves after you press the switch to unlock a door is uncannily similar to OOT.

I hate how slight every encounter and level is. I know, muh realtime race against the clock semi-RTS bullshit -- I GET the point of the game, okay? ... but for fuck's sake let me enjoy a scenario or setting for a literal goddamn minute. I could forgive a lot if it all culminated in one last level with a more 'classic' formula, or an assault beginning a level on rails, followed by an all range/labyrinth, followed by a large boss battle. Just one thing that feels significant, but no. That's my problem with Star Fox 2.

I really loved this game. Reminds me of Dillon's Rolling Western. I wish there were more action games like this where you defend a place from something in real time, not just plopping defense towers down on a map. I want to feel like I'm actually contributing something.

That being said I hate the way this game handles the difficulty options. They're very misleading and if you don't play on the hardest difficulty level you're literally being blocked out of half the game's content. Some bosses and missiles only spawn on the higher difficulty.

What are some general tips to git gud at Star Fox 2? I also wouldn’t mind some for Star Fox 1 either. I’m gonna play through them both back to back but 1 is definitely giving me trouble.

It's an awesome game. I recently scored over 300k (320k+), and I had made a deal with myself to stop playing after 300k, so now I'm sad, but there are other games to play.

Git good tips?

If you are just trying to beat the game:
- Take out the carriers first
-Use the warp to quickly take out a carrier in the beginning
- Be extremely wary of letting your satellite be captured.
- Learn the levels with extra bombs and make sure you get them all.
-You can farm bombs by exiting and reentering a level
- Use a bomb on each star Wolf dog fight.
- There are other key places to use bombs, watch a speedrun and you'll see
-Travel with your mothership a lot. It allows you to quickly heal both ships and also allows you to warp quickly back to Corneria to defend it.
- sometimes it is good to play a planet until you enter the base, then exit to take out missiles or fighters heading for corneria. When you re-enter the planet you will start inside the base.
- learn how your satellite works so you can predict which missile or fighter it will take out.

My tips after beating it a bunch of times on Expert, based on the official release:

>Chose a fighter (Fay/Miyu) plus a balanced craft (Fox/Falco)
>Take down a cruiser and some fighters first, then a far off planet
>Mainly use the fighter and go down to planets and pray you get the double lasers, this is a priority
>Then come back as the remaining cruiser is getting ready to attack the planet
>Remember Andross tends to send a second wave of invasions and/or cruisers when some time passes and you've finished either, so once you free the last planet or destroy the last cruiser, SEIZE THIS OPPORTINITY TO CLEAN UP THE LEFTOVERS, he can't summon shit while you're on a long mission, it has to be on the map
>If you free Meteo soon you get an invaluable warp vantage point, but if it didn't start conquered, BE CAREFUL WARPING THERE AND MOVING FURTHER INTO THE MAP, Andross wil conquer it during the midgame and send your mothership back to Corneria, most likely leaving you stranded on the other end of the map
>When you engage Starwolf, use your double lasers and make sure you're shooting where they're headed, not where they are, this is very, very important, as dumb as it sounds, if you master this, they're chumps
>If you don't have double lasers, switch to Fox/Falco and cheese the Starwolf team member with two bombs. I honestly recommend using them to cheese at least one of them, when you're the most pressed for time
>Those spinning ships are terrible, potentially the worst oponent in the game, look at their position in your map when they spin
>The midgame is the hardest part, it can really become a clusterfuck, and Andross' elite robots are pretty nasty if things are ganging up on you. I think the Space Blade can be ignored a little if i isn't aggroing you, it only does like 2% to the planet per attack, go for cruisers and missiles instead
>Your satellite kinda sucks but don't neglect it, pay attention to how it's rotating, it'll take down the threat in that direction

>> No.9006095

>>8999857
I beat the mostly finished untranslated snes version on Emulator a decade ago. Since the main planet can't take damage in the unfinished one, I beat it without the planet taking any damage.

I love StarFox2. It's an obvious example to me of a good sequel done right, because it changes of a lot of things, but still keeps the appeal of the original. SF64 is more like a remake of SF1 in a lot of ways, by comparison.

It'd a great game and a worthy sequel. Literally the dream game I wanted as a kid. The carrier approach sections seem under developed and the only time the frame rate feels like an issue is during the star wolf fights. Other than that, I had a great time with it. Beat all the difficulties but I'm not ace enough to get a star rank and I haven't found all the pepper coins. It's not much but here are my tips:
>learn to circle strafe in walker mode. Tapping the shoulder button is key to achieving a controllable turn rate
>twin blasters can be found on most planets
>use bombs to dumpster the star wolf team
>some secrets are found behind false wals or out of bounds on the planet surface and appear in the map to help you find them

That one argonaut dude, Dylan whatshisface, had a hand in the very early Zelda 64 production. He showed his model on twitter that was Hyrule Castle during the period of time where the game still took inside the castle similar to Mario 64, and his model has the same textures and geometry to the final game's Forest Temple, minus the "overgrown vines" overlaid textures in the final game, so it must have definitely be connected to OoT.

I'm not sure. Supposedly, Croc was a Yoshi pitch that Nintendo ripped off to make Mario 64, but the timeline of events and development time don't quite match up, and many Argonaut staff stayed behind at Japan and assisted with teaching the staff how 3D worked, how to model and the like.

You're thinking of Giles Goddard.
>>9010553
Argonaut started working with Nintendo to produce Star Fox 1, which was basically Starglider but on-rails.
What happened after depends on who you ask.
The cancellation of Star Fox 2 was at least publicly the end of Nintendo and Argonaut's relationship (although they'd later release Buck Bumble on the N64). Two of Argonaut's most high-profile engineers upped and went native in Japan, Dylan Cuthbert and Giles Goddard. Cuthbert left after finishing Star Fox 2 and worked for Sony for a while, whilst Goddard was poached directly by Nintendo.
Jez San claims that around this period, Argonaut were working on an SM64-type platformer with Yoshi as the lead, and that Nintendo essentially leaned on them to stop, only to later release SM64 themselves. Someone on Neogaf who also worked at Argonaut has said it wasn't a platformer but rather a racing game.
Worth noting here that the leak two years ago had an unmarked Yoshi model in the same folder as Link and in Star Fox 64's format. The famous Space World 95 Link was also created by Goddard.
Goddard is officially credited with just the SM64 face and is humble in interviews but for various reasons I suspect he had far more "input" into SM64 and OoT than he lets on.

>Goddard is officially credited with just the SM64 face and is humble in interviews but for various reasons I suspect he had far more "input" into SM64 and OoT than he lets on.
I wouldn't doubt, at least during the Zelda 64 portion of development before the introduction of child Link, he had a lot of input until Koizumi learned enough from his 3D expertise to get full control of the game's development once the vision for Zelda 64 became finalized into OoT. That's just me guessing though. Zelda 64 had a weird tone to it, more similar to Goddard's Space World 95 tech demo.

>Star Fox 64 has minimal changes and is probably a soft reboot instead of a hard reboot since there isn't as big a gap between games.
>GameCube games have no changes.
>Star Fox Command wouldn't be Cuthbert failing to recapture Star Fox 2 so it wouldn't suck as hard, and it features the return of Miyu and Fay to the series.

That alone made me like the game, especially taking into account the hardware it was running on. Also, out of curiosity, is there a way to get more consistent barrel rolls, and is there any trick to getting better at the third person aiming or does it just come with practice?

Alright, so what is this “soul” factor. After playing Star Fox and reading some of the old comics I’m starting to “see” it. Is it just nostalgia mixed with a bit of heartfelt imperfection?

>> No.9017251

>Is it just nostalgia mixed with a bit of heartfelt imperfection?
Retard. Soul means soul. It is just how "humane" the art in general.
Take final credits, for example. You can just roll the text down. Or you can make a minigame for the credits scene. Or you can animate all the characters to go on the screen and bow before the player, as if they were artists and you've just watched a good play.
With small touches like that a talanted artist can create soul in the art. Something might happen in the background. Cutscenes set to create not just visuals, but feelings and impact. Etc, etc.
Most modern devs - especially big ones - do not even see games as art in the first place. A game for them is a "product" or a "service".
And talent is a whole another thing.

On one hand, it sucks that it more or less killed the franchise. On the other, I’ll just be glad the series can fade into obscurity and there’s still some objectively good games to go back to, even if I didn’t mind Zero as much as other people seemed to.

According to wording in a Prima guide (yea I know), it's suggested that Fay replaced the goat, not that Fay was a goat. Also it mentions here that Fay was based on Cuthbert's childhood crush (pretty sure it was in one of his AMAs). I can imagine without Cuthbert that it didn't really feel right to have Fay stick around; Miyu not as much do they reworked her to look less like a female Fox. One thing I just remembered, there is a certain amount of necessary delay between each barrel roll as well. So to do multiple rolls, it's not R+R+R+R+R+R, it's R+R...R+R...R+R. If you train yourself to do these double-tap patterns, you can barrel roll all day long.

Nintendo as a whole was intent on pretending Star Fox 2 didn't exist (they still consider Star Wolf as from SF64 and the Walker from Zero, which is TECHNICALLY true if you strictly go by official release but is still stretching the facts). SF64 itself was a reboot and hardly continued any of SF2's ideas besides all-range and Star Wolf, despite Miyamoto trying to damage-control the reboot and SF2's cancellation by claiming percentages of them were remade in SF64. And Miyu and Fay not only never got a developed enough backstory to really explain how they're part of the team, but a six-member dynamic is harder to write than a four-member one (they barely managed it in Assault and even then Peppy's role was changed). And other characters essentialy replaced Miyu and Fay, and were basically Cuthbert creations (notice how Katt's personality is "girl" because the SF64 team didn't know how to write women). Oh, Cuthbert may have had the chance to put them in Command, but by that point, the series amassed a backlog of more familiar characters, and it probably wasn't the right game to bring them back anyway. That all being said, they have a real shot in the next game, whenever that happens, because SNES Classic sales were good and they've proven to be a hit with fans.

The leaked rom had fps counter at the top of the screen and disabled Corneria damage.
The fan patch translated the rom to enlgish, enabled damage and disabled the fps counter.
Both had overpowered homing lasers.
The "final" snes mini release disabled homing laser and had a ton of small tweaks.

It's unclear whether Argonaut or Nintendo owned the rights to fayu or miyu or kayu or payu whatever until the snes mini release.

Darn, I remember when the new Ratchet & Clank game came out and Rivet got her first R34 art in mere hours after the presentation. I've thought that's pretty fucked up.
If there will be a new, big Star Fox game one day - even if it will be good - there will be hardly a good place to talk about it. Once again, I'm truly glad SF2 got released rather quietly and without pomp and only places like /vr/ are interested in it.

I think it boils down to:
/vr/ actually plays games, /v/ doesn’t.

There’s also the fact people are better about self moderation here probably because they actually want to discuss and play old games and not just coom 24/7, which isn’t to say I don’t like attractive designs and fan service, but I feel like often times /v/ is just a mix between /trash/ and /b/ wearing a video game mask.

Anyways.

If they did anything it would have been a Zero port with new content/fixed gripes. I don’t think we are going to see a new Star Fox for a long, long time.

Now hypothetically, if it was a new game
>bare bones 64 retread with customizable Arwing as the selling point
>marketed as the TRUE sequel to 64
>short as shit with promised free updates
>maybe get one or two more routes via updates and lots of cosmetics
>shallow multiplayer tacked on (probably a couple paid dlc packs for multiplayer)
>depending on how well it did, maybe get 1 dlc

That’s more or less been Nintendo’s first party approach since they’ve run out of games that were either planned or rereleased for the Wii U.

Now, to keep this ending on too low a note, keep your eye on the Star Fox Conquest rom hack. It’s looking pretty damn good and may scratch the itch for a new Adventure style game.

Mixed, bittersweet feelings on this, anon. On one hand, the Star Fox-brand transition was going to happen anyway, and it was going to feel even less like a Star Fox game and more like "Krystal Misadventures, guest-starring Fox McCloud". The final game is actually a merger of the N64 development and an unrelated Star Fox proto, which is why the Arwing sections feel like a tech-demo. That said, there are things that are missing in the final, like some locations, characters and subplots. Honestly though, the core game didn't change too much. It has more of a Saturday Morning feel than the more melodramatic original, but screw it, I'd rather have the game not take itself too seriously. It's exaggerrated how much better the original vision was. Do I wish they'd done some things differently? Sure. But to weld it into Star Fox AND convert it to GameCube AND get it on store shelves less than 24 hours the Microsoft buyout(!)? These results under those conditions are impressive.

>> No.9036984

>>9036559
I also do not mind attractive designs and even ocassional bit of erotica. I guess, self-moderation is actually the most important thing regarding this question.
It also doesn't help that porn nowadays is just as soulless as anything else. How much of that stuff actually depicts character as, like, an actual character, showcasing his feelings, his style, his act? Most of the time it's just someone's fetish covered with a texture of preference. Heck, half of luck is there if character still keeps his original gender.
Either way, I'm just glad that /vr/ has good moderation to take out those who can't get into self-moderation. Otherwise, with Star Fox being one of the prime attractions for that kind of people, this thread could go south rather quickly.

Played a bit, read the ending dialogues and scenarios. Guess it wasn’t as bad as it was initially made out to be.
>more endings then not have Fox and Krystal back together
>any ending where Fox gets cucked is a bad ending for her
>one of the bad endings has Fox and Falco saying “fuck that shit” and just leaving everything to be F-Zero drivers
>a super good ending where Fox and Krystal have a kid together and sunset

Though I guess none of it is canon anyways, but it’s pretty easy to just pick the Goodbye Fox ending as most of the endings lead to it anyways and it’s the only one that could be considered a definitive ending to the 64 timeline.
now I just need to figure out why the depressing endings for fictional characters bothered me so much.
