I had a Lands of Lore 2 dream this morning that there was a secret that let you climb onto the tree canopy of the Huline Jungle. It was a big jumping puzzle with narrow branches criss-crossing, and if you fell off you landed back on the lower level and had to get all the way back up. I found a magic item called 'Eagle's Beak' and when I equipped it, hostile flying eagle-monster enemies began appearing from underneath and swooping at me. Intense shit.

Theres some dungeon crawlers that have a strong focus on character building, games that you can pull out spreadsheets and take hours minmaxing your characters to wreck shit, and then theres other dungeon crawlers that have a very linear leveling progression, but are tightly designed and you arent meant to put a ton of mental thought into it.

Shining the Holy Ark is in the 2nd camp, you shouldn't expect the game to be really hardcore in terms of building and difficulty, but the game has a very strong personality, some really cool gimmicks, memorable music, a great aesthetic, just expect about 30-40hours of a fun time and then dropping it for good.

Been trying to remember the name of some weird adventure/action/rpg game. It was kind of Daggerfall-ish/Hexeny, not a TES game or doom engine though. Was pretty janky, not a very well-known title AFIAK, but I think it may have had rudimentary multiplayer which made it interesting. I think it had some kind of weird sine wave based spellcasting meter too, though I might be confusing that with yet another game.

There are lots of mediocre dungeon crawlers on PC-98 that use anime titties as a selling point. Of those, Raidy got an English release of its remake.

That Deathkeep game is not bad, wasn't aware of there being AD&D games on 3DO. First level is a bit tough right off the bat with slippery ice floors and some liquid that drains your health quickly on the sides of those ice floors. Once you get the boots it's fine.

If you want my opinion in this then i would say turn based is better simply because it supports the "roleplay element" more than real time combat, and i think it's easier to flush out the combat this way especially if you have 6 or 8 party members in battle at the same time.

Ultima Underworld isn't too complicated and the dungeons aren't a clusterfuck like Daggerfall since they're all handmade Just have to get used to the WASDZXC movement and you never want to use the look, speak, interact modes when there's a generic mode that lets you do all of that based on context. If you want a casual dungeon crawler, try Might and Magic 6.

Daggerfall have a fantastic character creator but the problem with the game is that it's all about procedural generation, 2000+ random dungeons, you may like it and you may hate it.
