Replaying the game myself, and one thing came to mind.

If the Weapons in FF7 were the Planet's guardians, created by the planet in a time of crisis who make sure nobody fucks the planet up, why didn't Ruby or Emerald go down to the Northern Crater to slap Sephiroth around and stop all this madness? I mean, both of them could easily beat him. No need for Cloud and company to do a damn thing.

Why did the Weapons leave the northern crater in the first place and go fuck humans lives up anyway? Shinra is bad, I get it, leeching all the planet's lifeforce or whatever from the ground, but can't the Weapons understand that its small potatoes compared to Sephiroth who is trying to ram a fucking meteor into the planet destroying everything?

Are Weapons mind controlled by Sephiroth or some crap? I don't think that was ever implied. And at the northern continent, you learn from Professor Gasts videos that Weapons were originally made to counter Jenova, but then the Ancients did it, so Weapons were useless and just went to sleep or some shit.

TL;DR Weapons in FF7 make no sense whatsoever. Or am I missing something?

Talking about Gold Saucer, has anyone EVER beat the 3rd guy in the 3-D battler? The disco dude with the afro? Dude's a cheating bitch. I mean, I even read some stuff online and it says its about a 15% change to beat the 3rd guy, even less against the 4th guy who I've never seen. And you would get 300 GP for beating them, and its so tempting...but I just can't.

I suck balls at throwing hoops in the basketball game too, never even gotten 2 in a row.

The only way I get GP is motorcycle+snowboarding+submarine game and the occasional chocobo stuff, and ofcourse buying GP from the dude at the entrance for gil.

Final Fantasy 7's pre-rendered backgrounds look so damn good. I wish you could get screenshots of them in higher resolutions.

So I'm currently replaying FF7 as well, and I just got to the part where Aeris dies. I never cared for her, but man I still get a little choked up when I see the scene. They did a good job in using her theme here as well.

but my current / newest favorite, which I found while replaying the game a few months ago is without a doubt "Listen to the cries of the planet"
entering the city of the ancients and looking at the abandoned and lifeless city that seemed to go on forever in the distance and hearing that kind of ominous, depressing and mysterious tune while already knowing what's about to happen almost made me not want to go further
the place with it's long distance back and forth running just seemed on to drag on forever, with the added drama of having no random encounters, all the while the music tells you "this is bad, this place is bad, you don't want to be here"

I first played FF7 with a friend, and we went back and forth naming character's after various people we knew.

We were playing on his system, so he got to name Cloud after himself.
I held out naming any character after myself, though, because I was holding out for the game to introduce someone cool.

Finally we get to the part where Cait Sith joins and I think, "we're already pretty far into the game, there probably won't be any more characters after this. I'll guess I'll take the cat-thing."

Of course, we eventually get to this part of the game, and I'm pretty upset I ended up giving my name to the thing.

That's not the worst part, though.

The worst part is that there is another character you get after Cait Sith. The next day we make it to the part where you get Cid, the coolest asshole in the game.

My favorite way to handle the Demon Wall is to equip the escape materia back in the Golden Saucer, so that you can reteleport into the black materia room and take it.

That triggers a flag, so that when you enter the Ancient Temple it immediately triggers the scene where Sephiroth mind controls Kain into stealing the Black Materia and running away.

That's it. Dungeon completed and you didn't even have to fight the demon wall.

sticking someone in the back row halves the damage they take from physical attacks, but also halves their physical damage output unless they have a long-range weapon or have the long-range materia equipped, iirc. getting ambushed swaps your row orders for that battle, but you can tap right (or was it left?) on the battle menu to have a character change rows or defend
also, triangle/menu button, i think it was, lets you skip to the next character with a full atb meter in case you want to save your healer for a carefully-timed cure-all
when you have all materia paired with a spell, you can tap r1 to switch between target-all and single-target. this will let you save your all usage if you only need to cure one person--the number of times you can spell-all is the rank of your paired all materia, so if you cure-all carelessly you could put yourself in a bad situation later in the fight

I was getting confused. It's just a weird concept i'm just now figuring out that the materia you equip doesn't give you what it's called. Restore doesn't give you restore. It gives you a list of things.

I feel like i'm almost better off just restarting the entire game now that I understand how rare and valuable some of this materia is. I'm pretty sure I gave some of my best stuff to Red XIII and Barrett, like I think both of them have Cure on them and Red XIII has an All on him, and I could really use all that shit right now. I have a bunch of Heals on me but that shit is borderline useless to me at the moment.

iirc there's a way to view and equip/unequip materia equipped to all party members. i think you tap square/switch on a character's materia equip submenu or something, but you might have to be at a save point

also cure 3 is less efficient than cure 2 is less efficient than cure. try not to use cure 2 unless someone's about to die or you're swimming in mp. obviously never use anything above cure while on the main menu
also, on the main menu, if you have a character use a spell from a materia that is paired with an all materia, tap r1 to select the whole party and save on mp. eg go to aeris -> magic -> cure and tap r1. iirc, if you hit square/switch you can swap between the materia menu and the magic menu, so you can quickly equip a character with an all materia and/or a cure materia if you're trying to conserve the mp of your healer

and i think you can deal. there are only a few spots like this from what i remember and by the time you get to the next one you should be much better-prepared

So ive decided this is a problem that can just be solved with a bit of grinding. What level should I aim for?

Grind and use Blade Beam a bit more to unlock Climhazzard. Yuffie doesn't really get a better Limit Break until Lvl 2. And that would take you a very long time to get too, since her second Lvl 1 Limit Break just heals the party. I'm usually around Lvl 40 with Cloud by the time I get to the temple. I hope you got the Princess Guard weapon for Aeris during the clock puzzle

OP if your still here, you mentioned you have Added Effect yes? does one of your characters have a linked slot on their weapon? if they do slap Added Effect + Choco Mog onto that badboy, this will give their regular attacks a chance at giving enemies the 'Stop' condition. My memory is a bit hazy , but it may work on the wall.
( remember this combo later for when you get Hades, swap it out with CM, hit something, laugh with glee )

The materia tutorial did. It's easy stuff, man. You just pair up support materia with appropriate stuff. Also, once you get out of the temple of the ancients, go work on your enemy skill materia. White wind+big guard will make every boss in the game a joke. There are plenty of FAQs that will give you the details.

Some random tips for OP.

You can exchange materia and even armor from party members outside your party. To do this, go to materia, press square or circle I think, then choose exchange.

You should NEVER leave any materia or good armor for people outside your party. Its a waste. Always keep good armor and all materia with your trio.

Any offensive magic + elemental materia in weapon gives your attacks that element. If there's a lot of ice enemies, link fire to your weapon. If you link magic+elemental on armor, it reduces damage taken from that element.

Added Effect is like elemental, but for status effects. Works with Choco mog = stop, Seal = Sleep/Silence, Bio = Poison, and so on.

Try having 2 Restore + all materia combos on different chars, so you have a healer + backup heal if shit goes down.

Always keep Barret / Yuffie / Vincent / Aeris in backrow. Ranged weapons do the same damage, and your char takes 50% less melee damage. Long Range materia in any slot will give melee fighters long range, duh, so you can keep that guy in backrow too.

Keep Enemy Skill on someone at all times. During the game you may find very good magics from enemies when they use it at the char with E.Skill.

STEAL STEAL STEAL! Keep Steal materia on your highest level char and try stealing from EVERY enemy or boss. Some bosses keep unique, very powerful loot you can only get with Steal.

Tips part 2.

If you get Ribbon accessory in the temple, it protects against almost all status changes. Put that on Cloud. Then give Cloud Heal + All combo. When you learn Esuna on Heal, Cloud can remove all status effects from the other 2 members since he is immune,

Level closer to 40 before going to the North continent. Shit gets harder there. You may also want to level Tifa, Cid or Barret. They have the best damaging limits. Red and Yuffie are fine too.

Just take your time, and study the mechanics of weapons, armor and materia a bit. They explain everything in text when you are choosing them.

You may have figured this, but to get a new limit on a level, you must use the earlier limit in that level. For example, use Blade Beam 7 or so times to get Climhazzard on Cloud. To get a new limit level, that character must get killing blows on enemies with their melee attacks.

In that scene it looks horrid. The characters are too big compared to the background. If the backgrounds were scaled up and things like arith's arms were fixed then I would play with this mod.
