My favourite scotformer from fifth gen. Reminds me of Rocket Knight Adventures with how there are shmup levels in between the platforming.

This game is fucking terrible and is VERY blatantly trying to ape Yoshi's Story.

>> No.9001658

You apparently don't know anything about the history of video games. In the PS1 era, they felt that non-Japanese people wouldn't buy 2D games. That's why such great titles were released only in Japan.

>>9001650
Everyone who has played it says otherwise. Give it a try.

I played it when I first bought a PSIO and hated it so much I turned it off within 20 minutes.

Why did so many Japanese PS1 devs in the mid to late 90s try copying Yoshi's Island so much? It literally mindbroke an entire generation.

To be fair, Yoshi's Island was just copying Plok's hand-drawn pastel aesthetics.

That may be so, but Plok was severely mid. Like Im talking really really mid. The gameplay just isnt that fun and the difficulty is too stiff. Yeah its a fascinating British shitpost, but thats all it'll ever be.

You look at games like Kitchen Panic, Tomba and Hermie Hopperhead and you can see they're even lifting game mechanics straight up out of YI, not just the visuals.

I suppose since most of these devs were indie amateurs they only had 2D on their minds during the great big 3D boom of the mid 90s which is how they got their shit greenlit to begin with, and since YI was meant as a giant last parting gift of 2D before jumping to 3D with SM64 it served as a subconcious cultural touchstone for these Japs. I just wish they could have tried being a little more original a little bit later when it would have mattered.

Why do people even like Yoshi Island? I love Mario platformer games, but I can't stand YI for more than 20 minutes.

You need a high IQ to appreciate it. I bet your favorite mario game os SMW too lmao

I have 126 IQ. SMW is my favorite, yes, but it is because of the hacks.
Explain to me how YI is a high IQ game.

also I don't know but 32-bit platformers are often kind of lacking... I don't know if it's because devs took them as a cheap C-team stuff, since 3D was the main focus that gen, but I can't really think of any 2D platformer from 5th gen that outdo the greats from the 3rd or 4th gen.
>SOTN
SOTN is fine but it's barely a platformer, more like a side-scroll action RPG

I'd wager Clockwork Knight 2, Goemon's Great Adventure and Klonoa stack up to some of the best titles from the 8-bit/16-bit gens.
>SOTN is fine but it's barely a platformer, more like a side-scroll action RPG
Nah, SotN is all style no substance. Once you learn how technically deep Super Metroid 3's gameplay is it's hard to go back to any other Willyvania-type sidescroller.

>> No.9003801

>>9003760
Point taken for GGA and Klonoa. CK2, I like these games but I wouldn't say they're god tier.
Though these games do use 3D graphics, and you can tell a lot of effort was put into them.
But that's 2 games out of hundreds of great sidescrollers from the 3rd and 4th gen.
I'd add Mischief Makers and Psychic Killer Taromaru to the list of stand out titles, but still they're like a rarity among 5th gen.
