Are there any homebrews or rom hacks you would rank among the best games on a system?

Star Revenge 6.25: Luigi's Adventure DX
Easily one of the greatest 3D platformers of all time, better than at least one official Mario game (Sunshine)

Hell yeah, that shit is fun as fuck. The air control they've added to the game is great and while tricking on ramps is a bit rough it's neat to see in 64.

Homebrew games are at a disadvantage since they do not have the expertise and financial incentive professionals of the era had, as a result many of them are rather poor. Not sure about other platforms since my experience is with NES, Japanese homebrew games are heads and shoulders above their western contemporaries such as Astro Ninja Man or Blade Buster, but for western games, I'd say the Indivisible demake and Eskimo Bob are certainly worth playing. Oh and the Great Gatsby NES conversion is good as well, despite being short.

I’ve never really played an original game that I would consider this way, but there are a bunch of SNES improvement mods that I think are really a pure improvement and what the original devs would do in rereleases if they respected their own work. They’re more like dozens of mods developed over years, delivered as one package.

>Super Metroid Redux
Brings control and QOL improvements from the GBA games, in addition to many, many other improvements.

>Super Mario World 30th Anniversary Edition
More cutscenes (they’re good), numerous improvements, minor content additions (new Yoshi types), and a hard mode (it’s awesome).

>Secret of Mana Turbo
Brings true real-time combat to the game, but also dozens of other improvements like visible armor.

Mario 3Mix is one of the best NES games, as it improves on Mario 3, which was already one of the best NES games.

The missing link unironically feels like something you would have seen tossed in with the collectors edition gamecube ports of the n64 games.

This is a cope for being lazy and not having an eye for quality yourself, thusly you need an official brand slapped on something before you'll CONSOOOOM it.

I'm playing A Super Mario World Central Production 2 and it's a 9/10 game so far with 20% exits completed. What an incredible adventure. If this game had been released commercially it would have been a big hit, although criticized for the difficulty and secret exits just looping around to where you already were.

I think it's the opposite - no force or monetary incentive means you can take as long as you want and implement as many esoteric ideas you have. On top of that you don't feel confined to a brand image or some specific difficulty level, you can go all out with it

Great romhacks are few and far between, but so are great games in general

>> No.9007704

>>9007216
It's a fine line romhacks walk like that. Devs have all the time they want to "finish" it, and so they can refine and add to it as much as they want. In theory, this can result in a game that's far larger and more polished than many actual games released for a system.

However, many romhacks also sufferer from being made by an enthusiast of the original game, which is good to a certain point. Mostly, it leads to the creator making the game far more difficult than the base and pushing so-called dead end mechanics further in an attempt to fix them rather than accepting that sometimes the system is neat but flawed. The end result is most romhacks are either flawed gems or so brutally difficult that the majority of players who haven't played the original a hundred times won't be able to enjoy.

Sonic 3 Complete probably belongs in this thread

Mega Man Rock n Roll is amazing and challenging but fair. Very good stage themes, every screen is deeply thought out, the bosses are tough but never just random shit (needle man) impossible to dodge. Roll is the easy mode, play the blue bomber for a true hardcore experience that really pushes the limits of what a Mega Man game can be. It was only made by one guy with help from playtesters
