Read something like Britsoft: An Oral History and you will see many luminaries talking about how important the rise of Thatcherism was to getting them the cash needed to start off in the games industry after the disaster of labour's policies in the 70s. What killed British developments is left wing ideas - they don't know how to capitalise on success and talent and tried to do "ethical" small indie game publishers when the USA and Japan had geared up megacorps for the era of brutal globalism that followed, resulting in near total destruction of local talent (and there's a reason Sony and Nintento were getting British engineers in to work on 3D on their consoles in the early 90s - they were really really fucking good).
The lack of will to compete and do what was necessary in business has slowly killed the country. Look at world leading tech like ARM slowly drifting out the door as well as an example.
