The team behind finishing the expansion is basically the EDuke32 team which is basically the Ion Fury team. So they were too busy with Ion Fury for a long time and now the Ion Fury expansion pack. IMO, they really should not hoard the expansion until they're done working on it.
However, the original build without any of their changes actually leaked and you can play it. The levels can all be played through and are actually pretty fun. They just lack a bit of final polish. Apparently Simply Silly hired some of more accomplished Build level designers rather than the chucklefucks that made Nuclear Winter.

Is this an accurate page for weapon damage stats? Some of it lines up from what I’ve seen on the wiki and provides some interesting conclusions.

Raze is a amalgam of a bunch of source ports with a GzDoom Booty. It's fine for casually playing the base games and hit-or-miss for running mods/levels/addons.
Raze GL palette emulation is also pretty piss-poor leaves shit looking deepfried in places.

I'd recommend using the ports Raze is biting off of, for now. Maybe in the future Raze will become an advanced source port, but for now it's just very basic and easy way to play Build game's vanilla, and a hack to do much else.

I think that Gazebo-ish arenas are fine, and I'm ok with lengthy stuff. my problems with the strogg map weren't even about encounters for the most part. just lots of empty corridors with slow-ass elevators, kind of pointlessly meandering progression, and enemy breadcrumbs that are hidden until you already turn the corner. and it looked like an uglier Insomnia for Q1 which is already an uglier Q2 which was ugly to begin with. also the midi was grating (despite all midis having the same author?). and I think it had a hurtfloor arena that I just waited out circlestrafing instead of engaging properly.
with his Irkalla maps, they don't even feel like maps but rather multiple maps (barely) stitched together. and in the unholy cathedral there's a section where I backtracked to get the secret, and then only found my way out on like fifth attempt, because places that seem nearby are actually connected with some roundabout paths through multiple floors. while the other map had really awkward cyberdemons - again I just left one wandering around, which I never do in other maps.

Thief is a bit different in that regard since it's more about exploration, which that game excels at.
Except in Thief 3, where you sink like a fucking stone. They shouldn't even have let you near the water, it's such a weird design choice to have it kill you instead of just roping it off.

Unreal does okay too since it's mostly about the exploration. There is a little bit of water combat, but it's not much. It's more like the water is a hazard than an environment you want to hang around in.

I'm pretty sure the shorter one with white hair and green shirt is Al Sneed and the one you've pictured here is Charles "Chuck" Tamzarian, I think 256x256 should be perfect, zandronum auto-scales player sprites when it thinks they are too big but it also takes invisible pixels into account so I can just crop the unused space and it'll be fine, zandro will never break from oversized sprites so if u have any concerns just don't worry and I can sort it out for you

Sewer levels are just a common trope, but there are two examples that stand out as being particularly bad. Dark Forces, and Redneck Rampage.

There are some fan missions in Thief that are games into themselves. the level of mapping design is out of this world in some of them.

Kinda makes playing both campaigns quaint although i still love the original maps.

I dont know if some people would like this, its a weird dream of mine of picking up old games like Thief or HL and now that tools are restrictions are "over" remake the original maps but put a tons of new details and features without breaking the idea of the original levels too much.

Is it really worth it?
Tried it a bit and it feels like a bunch of micromanagable mechanics added just for the sake of micromanaging these mechanics while the combat itself feels like western-style who-shot-first-wins with barely any depth. That's just my first impression, obviously I haven't seen shit yet, and judging from the manual size alone I haven't even scratched the surface. Also it feels like 99% of existing wads are just not working with this style of gameplay.

I'd say yes. But I speak with some bias because I've been playing it for a few years and acclimated to things and enjoy the way it sucks. Also there's a lot of nuance to combat when you're fighting the hellspawn. Furthermore if you're wanting a weapon with more depth, pick up the Thunderbuster and wield the power of the gods and probably kill yourself in the process.

Also while some encounters are gonna be REALLY fucking hard in HD, there's almost always a way out if you're clever: You can pick up a weapon like the Liberator and use the 7mil ammunition to shoot through thin walls and kill monsters inside closets before the trap springs, you can plant explosive traps with grenades and wires, or use IEDs to blow them up. Or deploy one of the automated gun turrets (Either the DERP which is a pistol on treads, or the HERP which is a more traditional machine gun turret). Beyond that, if the encounter is well and truly fucked, you can just choose to leave. Kick a door down, or blow it up and just leave the level.

I feel you, anon. I've been digging into Douk addons as of late and been a bit disappointed at the quality of level design in general.
Alien Armageddon, while an impressively ambitious and large project, seems to want to shoehorn a bunch of slapdash stuff, either visually or gameplay. All the sprites and custom graphics are clearly just resized jpegs of stuff searched up on Google, there is little to no refinement going on, almost all of them have horrible aliasing artifacts. It looks really poor and drags down the game visually.
The gameplay mods, while still kinda cool, feel like I'm stuck playing on some Zoomer's goofy GzDoom mod load order.
Enormous effort, but the lack of restraint in design is a drag.

For 400 Minutes, it was generally sorted by difficulty, but not entirely. I also tried to put higher quality maps closer to the start to leave a good first impression. A2Rob's map was placed pretty early despite being fairly difficult. There were lots of gimmick maps, so for the third episode of the set, I made it so the order would alternate between a gimmicky map and a more traditional one. The traditional maps would serve as breathers before and after the wackier experimental maps. There were a few outliers, such as how Live Complex was placed in MAP09 because it's a Dead Simple clone in the wrong map slot, and also for meme value.
Seeing how nobody really complained about map order from the beta all the way to the final release, I'd say this approach works very well.

There's no excuse for this kind of waiting. 94 Protons Of /vr/ is now go and we have the Beta assets ready (other weapon reskins will follow), read the 'pamphlet' for information.
The episodic themes aren't TOO rigid of a requirement, Plutonia itself kind of just did whatever, and levels are moved between with teleporters. It would be cool if you played around with the textures and props though.

There's slots to claim for the E1 boss level and E2 boss level, as well as for a Hunted tribute, optionally also second one. One big level per each episode, going before the boss level, would be good. Otherwise, levels can largely be kind of whatever.

The E1 boss level should feature some sort of arena battle where you fight two Paratamizers at once, and probably fighting a couple of normal Cyberdemons before that (perhaps base it on Cyberden). The Paratamizer can be used as a mini-boss in E2 and E3
The E2 boss level is open for discussion. I had the idea for an Icon Of Sin style level where you maybe destroy some 'phylacteries' or something, and the eyeless baphomet there also has eyebeams to shoot at you with, but perhaps something more interesting can be done.

The opening and ending rooms have a Killer5 aesthetic, the rest is heavily Plutonia-inspired though. I studied/replayed some of my favorite Casali maps right before making it. Alright, that level kicked my ass, I like the ambushes and the traps, and it looks gorgeous. I'll have to give it a go in DSDA in a moment, though I expect I'll fare slightly worse there.

Railings in pic related aren't solid, not sure if that's intentional, so either they should be solid or they should be another midtexture.
If I were to suggest any gameplay changes maybe one or two more stimpaks, but I like that the level is hard, it could fit in the late game.

I liked TNT for its tech style and have never touched Plutonia. 6 maps in and it's pretty fun so far although a bit too bland in textures. I hope it doesn't get too intricate in the end like Evilution. Yeah, commando bros and archies are present since the first map but it's still good for light hearted runs with RLA, RL monsters, lightRPG and zetashop. I can't imagine playing it with something more "demanding" like Brutal or Hideous Destructor though.

Alright, just played through that, and that was really good, felt fairly authentically Plutonia. I love the amount of secrets too, and some of the ambushes are pretty clever.
No starting teleporter, but this level could maybe work as E2L1 or E3L1, probably couldn't easly add the starting pad without having to alter a bunch of the gameplay and progression (though perhaps the pad could be recessed into the floor/sky like at the end, I thought that was a cool look).

As much as I love Half-Life 2, does anyone kinda wish we got something similar in tone to the first game? Absolute Redemption and Poke646 were bangers, and seeing BM-style reboots of both would be amazing. Fighting Race X in bombed-out cities and trying to avoid Black Ops while preventing alien invasions in other labs would have been cool

It's the BFG, it gets used by a lot of mods but the firing sound for it is fucking abysmal.

A lot of the sounds suck too, they mostly removed a really good gib sound (the one in at least some of Kegan's mods) and shifted it to the end of the not-Cyberdemon's death sound.

True. Using the "standalone" (i.e. bundled with an older GZDoom) version would solve that problem (for Windows users). Similarly there's a "standalone" version of Doom 64 CE (for Windows). But in the interest of limiting bloat, I'd prefer to have one copy of GZDoom installed if possible. (Plus I'm on Linux so the standalone releases don't help me.)

I'm conflicted on the pistol myself. I love the new weird boxy sci-fi pistol, but that old slim pistol was the foundation of one of the nicest looking custom pistol sprites I've seen.

I want to J.A.C.K. it, but the UV tool in Trenchbroom is just too good and I hate the lack of auto-triangulation for making terrain (unless I've just missed it). Also vertex rotating seems to always mangle texture alignment regardless of UV/texture lock.
Really love the prefabs and the geometry tools that Trenchbroom doesn't have, but the convenience just isn't matched. I hope it keeps getting updated though.

I was having frequent issues with invalid geometry trying to make terrain out of square brushes. They weren't incredibly steep or anything so I don't get what the issue was. Tried using triangles instead but I got annoyed and switched back to Trenchbroom.
