Why is Xbox emulation talking so long to get reasonably playable? Does it have to fo with special Direct X API functions Microsoft put into the system's software that wasn't documented or some undocumented hardware or what? It can't be any CPU based apecs since we can emulate the CPU many times over in 2022 and PCSXw is reasoably accurate and Dolphin is fucking fantastic. However tbe Xbox is stuck in emulation purgatory.

I have no idea about the reasons, but I've freaked out when I've found out that savegames are tied to a motherfuckin' HDD, so if your XBox has to have an HDD replaced - you will have to re-bind all your savegames to a new one.
Not to a profile, not to a console, but to an HDD. What kind of a madman did it and why?
Also, the process of re-binding is quite a hackery. And I've thought moving games from profile to profile on 360 or PS3 was tedious.

Its developing with a few games being 100% playable. Biggest downside is the surprisingly steep system requirements to run it.

Xemu is doing really well, majority of the library is fully playable from beginning to end, with enhancements and little to no bugs.
https://xemu.app/#compatibility

It also supports things like multiple internal resolution rendering.
Still some games crash, like Unreal Championship 2, which is what I'm waiting for. But if the games you want to play are playable, it's a better experience than a real Xbox these days. Most people still seem to be stuck in like 2018 when this wasn't the case.

I've walked through Black without a hitch, Return To Castle Wolfenstein also worked nicely, Burnout 2 was flawless...
Forza Motorsport has a lot of sound issues and framerate noticeably drops on several turns on several tracks, but other than that it is very playable and very enjoyable, almost completed it.
MechWarriors and Unreal Championship 2 are waiting for their turn. I've heard that they work, yet I'm more interested if it is possible to install DLC for UC2. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure it is possible to do it, but I haven't looked into the issue just yet.
If you are really interested in performance, I have some videos of Black and Forza Motorsport.

>Super cheap, Easily modded
In what FUCKING way? (Pic not yet related, don't have a hernia.)

I picked one up cheap during my garagesaling days around ~2015-2016 and it's been an enormous pain in my cock ever since. See, disc drive wouldn't spin up, and even after hours and hours of 'how to softmod' searches on a dozen occasions over the years, every god damn result is
>Use the disc drive to start exploit game
>Use the disc drive to boot burned CFW loader
>Buy our modchip and bust out the soldering iron, lol!
>Also something about having to fucking hotswap the hard drive in the process, which is probably on its last legs, so go out and buy SATA adapters for IDE cabling and shell out for a 500gb+ hdd too :^)

No fucking way to mod it without the drive - and, oh, what do you know, there were multiple different models of them and most were infamous for dying over a decade ago. How about you buy another one instead? Oooh, but sorry - no combo of 'original xbox drive', 'OG 2001 xbox samsung dvd drive', 'not fucking 360 or xbox one drives you absolute fucking CRETINS' will actually find you ebay listings - and even if you DO find one, it'll cost you as much as a fucking system itself.

Which brings us back to that pic: I spent such an UNGODLY amount of time trying to work my way into the thing (including four separate instances of trying pot tweaks, before buying a potentiometer, doing it again with actual readings, and STILL failing to get a working drive) that I finally just said fuck it a few months back and bought myself out of the pain.

I'm actually reverse engineering/copying the thing's filesystem RN in prep for once again diving into my original system, now with a confirmed working drive to swap over, just to finally, god willing, get it modded too and be free of this albatross. Still, I've modded PSP, Wii, Vita, PS2, 3DS; literally nothing has been even 10% of the pain of OG xbox, and I fully expect it to be yet another nightmare in waiting.

>Just solder it bro
Good suggestion, totally serviceable! Except, thing is: anything involving soldering immediately becomes neither cheap nor easy. Unlike softmods, It's always going to require the purchase of a wholeass workshop and the research/learning of a new technical skill; compare to PS2 modding, where buying a $10 exploit memory card and sticking an ethernet cable into the console's all you need to start playing backups, and the difference is night and day.

You wanna start soldering? Gotta buy ~$250 worth of mats across a decent iron, solder, wick, flux, wires, ect; that whole set I've ALSO spent years hemming and hawing over buying for the occasional dead wireless dongle or sketchy cap replacement, but every time another component to buy comes to light (last time around it was 'you have to buy a hot air station too?!?') and it once more becomes more of a PITA than I'm willing to deal with at the time. And that's discounting the modchip you have to buy for the specific mod as well; you can qualify all this with 'well, it's an easy SOLDER job...' all you want, and that can totally be true, but the mere fact that OG xboxes essentially have no readily available modding means other than fully busting the things open and going to town on the electronics themselves 100% places them firming in the modding 301 course tier. This isn't a 'why haven't you modded your 3DS' sort of deal; you actually need significant investment, and unlike its contemporary PS2 and Gamecube the modding process hasn't really gotten any more streamlined since its hayday back in the aughts.

A lot of people will just generally tell you it's not even worth trying because Xemu is a pain in the ass to set up, and that's a huge filter. There are some pre-configured Xemu setups on archive.org. One other thing of note: Xemu's gay about what media it wants. It wants ISOs, but a certain type, I suppose. DO NOT DOWNLOAD FROM THE ISO COLLECTION ON ARCHIVE.ORG, THEY DO NOT WORK, download from the 'HDD ready" archive, then throw those files into an ISO using the c-xbox tool.

Eh, it was more complicated than that. Yes, almost all games were playable, especially if you stuck to the usual popular mainstays (Mario, Zelda... the list goes on), but it necessitated several emulators (sometimes needing an older version), a bunch of different plugins, and often fiddling with the settings and plugin combinations on top of that. None were Just Werks.

Just check out this site, which proudly advertised that almost all games were playable with the correct setup, and to its credit did its best to attempt to give the best possible combination of emulator, plugins and settings on a per-game basis, and even packaged everything into one download, but you cannot say this situation was at all user-friendly:

http://bhemuhelp.unaux.com/n64mgcl/N64ConfigList.html

Thankfully, we're well past this stage now. You download either Project64 or any flavor of Mupen64Plus, use ParaLLEl-RDP, and call it a day for the vast majority of games.

This. I'm just attempting to remove/replace the clock capacitors of my original Xbox, and I am still lacking the vent fan for fumes, helping hands, mats, wick, and solder to even get started. Hidden costs include a phone which can machine translate Chinese instructions. The NEET kids which live rent free in a basement even make lousy excuses like "a practice board is only $15" not knowing that is just over 2 hours of work for that $15USD which is to be discarded on a failed practice. The only logical explanation is some sort of kickback for funneling money into China. Rising inflation and spiking fuel prices has made it more difficult to get the necessary funding. It would be more cost effective to find someone that already has the equipment/skills to perform the operations, but they are all asking for some $60+k annual salary to be paid by individuals for a supposed singular "simple job".

>buy a pre 1.6 model from a thrift store for 30 bucks (1.6 has bad video output and cant do 480p without some trickery). Just make sure to pull the clock capacitor off
>softmod with splinter cell and rockys soft mod tool
>make sure to rewrite your eeprom to null values
Now its time to hard mod
>solder 2 points on your mother board to flash the tsop
>download the latest ogxbox disc and burn it
>hook up a new hardrive with a sata adapter
>run the ogxbox disc and flash your tsop, install whatever dash you want (for me its xbmc for gamers)
