Honest opinions on Super Mario World? I always loved it as a kid and I think to this day it's the most solid 2D Super Mario platformer to exist out of every single Mario game.

I do unless it's the boring "duhhrrrr de cape briks da gaem" midwit "hardcore gamer" rambling.
Sometimes there's really good SMW threads with people discussing different experiences they had with the game, favorite elements of the game, etc. There's also a lot of really good SMW-era artwork.

Well, if you put it like that, then sure. Lemme just add a story I suppose
I think I first saw the game as a kid following my sister to a local friend's house. This is where I learned of the trick of jumping into Bowser when he does the mode 7 thing of flying into the screen. If you do it right you clearly see Mario just disappearing into the sprite. Absolutely pointless and nothing special, but heh

Yeah but anon wants honest opinions, that thread is full of contrarian zoomer cancer

In my honest opinion, game is fucking great and will always have a special place in my autistic brain because it was the pack-in game for the first Nintendo console I ever owned. People complain about it being inferior to 3 now but lemme tell you as an oldfag who was there when it dropped no one was pining away for 3. This shit was hot and was blowing people's minds. You could just see all the extra horsepower they had to work with.

I was there, and I preferred SMB3 (and 2 and 1) to SMW. I was more interested in Sonic the Hedgehog than another Mario game that wasn't as good as the previous one, IMO.
It's cool if you like it, but try being less of a fag about it.

Solid choices.
I use SMW to test controllers and TV. The controls are just perfect and I know them like the palm of my hand, I can tell even if there's the slightiest bit of extra input lag or any kind of inaccurracy

The thing with it is that SMW threads or SMB3 threads always devolve into a shitposting war to see which is better, which ultimately is down to personal preference as they're both masterpieces.
It's weird, but I should prefer SMB3: I have incredibly fond memories of it, it was my first super mario game, I remember the magical feel of playing it for the very first time back when I was like 6, the joy of discovering secrets on my own, the sense of wonder. Playing it with my neighbor friends every day during summer, and finally beating it one day, except we were too afraid to fight Bowser, so we called up my dad who never fought him before, but beat it in one try, we cheered him and saw the ending sequence in awe, first time I ever witnessed the ending of a video game. Generally everything in my life was right at that point, I have only the best of memories with this game.
But then, enter SMW. I first played it at a rich friend's house who had a SNES early on and I couldn't fucking BELIEVE my eyes and ears, sensory overload. He showed me Valley of Bowser (which he hadn't reach yet, but we could peek it through Donut Secret passage), the music in that map gave me goosebumps, I had never heard music like that in a video game, it sounded like real heavy metal as far as I could tell, paired with that flashing storm on the back with Bowser flying around his sparky castle.
I finally got my own SNES like a year later and man, I played SMW to death, it was everything I could ask for and more.
However, at that time my life wasn't as good as just a year or two prior. My family moved, I lost my friends, and had some other personal issues that basically made life not as bright.
However, I still prefer SMW a bit more than 3, it may be the controls, how much I love the map... I don't know.
I still adore 3, what I'm saying is that according to the nostalgia rule, I should be preferring 3, yet that's not the case.

It's literally a perfect game the way Ghostbusters is a perfect movie. It does everything it sets out to do, as well as it could conceivably be done.

>Honest opinions on Super Mario World?
Super nostalgic, one of my favorite games in my childhood, I didn't had the game myself so every opportunity to play it felt special.
The graphics and style are very unique and have aged like fine wine.
The physics are well polished, and are more suited for more extreme platforming layouts. Personally I'm more of a smb1 guy, where you can't correct your jump much and whenever running or not before jumping makes a drastic difference, so simple level layouts already feels dangerous.
I hate the input lag when jumping. Yes, I know Retro Arch has a tool for that.
Today I'm not much a fan of the cape item, it makes the game considerably easier without any trade off or strategy involved.
Being able to go to previous levels to farm lives makes it pretty easy too.

Not my favorite 2D Mario because that would be smb1, but a great game anyway.

Very good game, extremely good launch title, and the best pack in game ever. Yoshi's Island and SMW were both more fleshed out and pushed the hardware limits more, but considering what was happening at the time of release, SMW was nothing short of groundbreaking. It's one of the greatest games of all time and still holds up today.

Also, even though I like Sonic, how is it more interesting? It's much, much shorter and has extremely limited gameplay compared to SMW. Sonic can't pick anything up or throw anything, he can't fly or climb and there's no map screen, shortcuts, hidden levels or secret bonus world like in SMW.

I agree with you. I played SMB1-3 before SMW, and found SMW to be superior. The 30th Anniversary mod makes it pretty much perfect. There are some great modern 2D platformers, but SMW has the best combination of variety, a vast array of mechanics, visual design, music, and length. Peak of the genre.

It's fun as fuck the first time you play it but I feel like the fun is a little too surface level.
Don't get me wrong, it's a really good game everyone should play, but I feel like a truly excellent game is one you can play dozens and dozens of times without getting tired. SMW wore out it's welcome with me just a bit too early.
For comparison, the first and second times you play through a 2D Metroid game can feel totally different. On my first playthroughs I'm often shuffling through like a cowardly slug, but by my second or third time I'm bouncing off the walls like ping pong ball on helium.
Castlevania is also quite similar. Enemies that are huge roadblocks to a new player can become speedbumps to a veteran who knows how to backdash and aim and pick their weapons.
SMW doesn't let me interact with the world in a new way as I get better at it, so each playthrough just feels the same to me. Once I'd gotten all the coins and exits I just felt like I'd done everything there ever was to do in the game and I haven't touched it since.
It's an impressive game for a lot of reasons but I just can't see it ever being one of my favorites.

Curious that you feel that way because SMW is to me one of those games that I can replay endlessly, never get bored, and somehow always it feels like a new experience.
SMW's controls give you so much freedome that there's a lot you can do differently. Like back in the day I would struggle a lot with the whole throwing shells at an angle (Bowser's fight would give me nightmares) but nowadays I can juggle shells like a motherfucker and it's so fun to go through the level running while shooting shells in different angles. Or making jumps while crouching to fit in small places, things like that that the older Marios didn't have, neither did the later 2D Marios (the New series, etc) either.
That, and also the way you can progress in the game is very customizable. You can choose if you want to take normal routes or alternate routes, if you want to use the star road warps, etc. It's cool to experiment different ways to reach the end game with differently altered maps (for example you can skip the Donut Plains Ghost House so the bridge there never appears, or you can take the upper Vanilla Dome path so Butter Bridge never appears, etc)
Also the amount of sub-areas in the levels, I swear I had never come across the sub-area in Chocolate Island 5 until recently, I just never figured you could go inside that pipe back in the day, I discovered that for the first time in recent years. It's amazing to discover something new in a game I thought I knew like the back of my hand.
Fucking love this game, will always love it.

I absolutely love the japanese boxart because of that incredibly soulful world on the back, but I agree with what the other anon said, the minimalism and tasteful design of the US boxart is also good and iconic. The blue background does look better than the yellow.

That's a cool story, anon. I personally love how the bits in Super Mario World that are more tech demo-y, like the boss fights or the levels with exotic gimmicks. No other game in the SNES or even among 2D platformers feels like this one, it's just so fun to move around in it. SMB3 feels like a clear regression to me, although it is way more polished.
