Probably stating the obvious but prioritize the blades when upgrading weapons

You can attack nuisance enemies like harpies from a distance with the blades then immediately transition into a grapple to insta-kill them.

You also can't be hurt during the grappling animation so this is a good way to get a moment of respite when surrounded

The hold triangle launcher attack + the L1 spinning attack in midair is a good way to rack up quick combos for extra red orbs. Also judicious use of L2 Poseidon's rage when lots of enemies are onscreen can get you a couple hundred hit combo

It's not absolutely necessary, people on youtube have done no-upgrade runs on the hardest difficulties so in theory you could upgrade whatever you want and it would work. But for a normal run without being an expert you would probably regret maxing out the gorgon head or the thunderbolt and being stuck on hard boss fights with low-level blades. You have limited use of magic, the blades never run out.

Also, if you're really new to the series keep in mind that there's a lot of hidden shit everywhere. Don't just plow through levels without looking around for hidden chests, you want those health and magic upgrades.

Can't remember if it's in 2, but 1 has a movement trick where you roll and do a shoulder charge to keep speed, which is nice because the regular movement speed is pretty slow.

Also you should play the psp games, they're absolutely on par with the rest of the series and were some of the most impressive handheld games ever at the time. The ps3 ports add analog stick rolling, but emulating the originals isn't bad either

That's what I hate about modern ("triple A") games. They're so busy focusing on things that are tangential to the game, they forget to put the fun in.
Story, cinematography, realism, acting... the things you might look for in a movie, not a game.

There's like a thousand articles and YT videos praising the realism of shrinking horse balls in the cold in RDR2. There are videos comparing Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Forbidden West in terms of realism of the weather effects. I've seen people praise God of War 4 because Atreus is annoying as fuck, "how a kid should be".
How do any of these things contribute to the GAMEplay in a video GAME? I wouldn't wanna be annoyed by a kid IRL, why would I suddenly want it in a game?

It's a pretty good remaster compared to most as far as I know. Holds a steady 60fps, which the ps2 couldn't. The main issue to me is that it's cropped 16:9. In gameplay and FMVs you lose a bit from top and bottom. This was also how it worked on the original ps2 versions, so you could say it's accurate, but there you at least had a choice in the options iirc.

I just played through the game on hard and got tons of mileage out of it. Even on hard the heavy attack two-shots skeletons which is especially useful in that circular room with he spiked ceiling where the bastards keep stopping you from moving the platform. Also it takes the piss out of those armored guys with maces because the heavy attack interrupts their attacks so you can just triangle them to death.

Yeah, you have to be much more careful with it because it limits your mobility but you can still parry with it so you're not a sitting duck and in the right circumstances it's extremely effective. I was still using it all the way through the loom chamber gauntlet.

It's very much more of the same, so a lot of the same principles apply. Level up the blades first, look carefully for hidden areas, square square triangle is your friend, etc. A few significant differences, though:

>you can parry (including projectiles) and counterattack, which becomes an absolutely essential mechanic
>in addition to the usual chests there are a couple of very well hidden grecian urns which unlock insane powers but only after you beat the game once so try to find them on your first playthrough
>there are a few choke points where it can be really difficult if you go into it drained of your magic and / or rage meter, be careful not to waste them on less difficult enemies
>there's a part where you have to pull a lever to lower a gate and then run back to a steam vent that will boost you over the rising gate. You will probably fail at this several times because you have very little margin for error, even when you do it it will look like you're not going to make it you just have to be fast
>kill the cerberus babies IMMEDIATELY, they grow into big ones if you don't

Holy shit GoW 2 is a monumental improvement on GoW.
Now stuff like climbing walls and moving on ropes is so much better since now you can quickly move on them.
Rage of the Titans can be filled with its own orbs, and you can stop it.
The move with the blades that makes you swing instantly over chasms is fucking awesome.
The flying section is also cool and I like the finishers (I saw the extras in GoW where they said they really wanted to put a flying section but couldn't), though I hate how the up and down are inverted, which some menus also have in both games, as well as climbing ceilings (though this one is still a cool feature).

I only reached the Temple of Lahkesis, but I can tell that overall it's a better game. Jaffe is an idiot for what he said about Metroid Dread, but in GoW he's a genius.

Always blades first. When you run low on magic the blades are what you'll have to rely on. Also, whereas Poseidon's rage really didn't crank out huge combos unless you were at level 2 Cronos' rage is good for huge combos even at level 1.

Unlike GOW 1 it's really difficult to accrue enough orbs at the end of the game to max out everything. I finished the game with Lv. 3 atlas rage, the gorgon head cronos' rage and the spear at level at lv.2 (the stronger freeze beam is really useful IMO, the spear was just for variety) and the hammer at level 3. I could have upgraded Typhon's bane to level 2 I guess since it's cheap but I never really found it to be necessary

Don't play on the harder difficulties. These games are not meant to be played like that and were clearly not tested. This is a cinematic experience franchise and is probably best played on easy. Otherwise Kratos feels like a weak bitch unable to hurt anything in the game.

Don't use anything other than the default weapon. It's the only good weapon in every game. All the other weapons are pure downgrades and only some allow you to do fun speedrun skips.

For combat you MUST whiff two light attacks, it is MANDATORY that you miss them, then land the final heavy attack. If you do anything else, the enemies break out of it and hit you because nothing you do is a real combo and you're usually punished for trying anything but. Remember, whiff 2 lights then land a heavy. Square, square, triangle.

In 1 it's mandatory to level up the madusa move because otherwise the Cerberus spawners are actually impossible.

It's a shit franchise that should have ended at two. 3 is the worst so you should also just stop at 2.

See above, second point. Your post boils down to not knowing how to play the game, and blaming it on the game. It's a franchise that did gameplay well (pre 4) and that's why you hate 3.

Cronos' Rage doesn't have a very long range at first so if an enemy's far enough away nothing will happen. But if they're close enough when you use it it will shock them repeatedly and the good news is the spell lasts longer than the casting animation so you can cast it and then attack or dodge while it's still going, or cast it two or three times in rapid succession. If you use it multiple times while more than one enemy is in range you can rack up 100 hit combos very easily

I find 90% of the games are fun on higher difficulties, but there are a few points where it gets cheesy as fuck. The clones and Ares on God mode can be pure fucking bullshit, but at least that's the end of the game.

2 has that fucking Theseus fight which starts out a fair head-to-head fight, but then has him climb up to an inaccessible location where all you can do is pelt him with projectiles and you need to drain your entire magic meter multiple times and the only way to get more magic is by killing minoutaurs while he attacks you with insta-kill ice spikes and if you die you have to go back to the beginning and do it all over gain. FUCK the Theseus fight.

And then there's the Zeus fights which are insanely lopsided because he's a damage sponge and you die in a couple hits and every fights has like ten separate stages to it and each one requires you to be basically perfect for long stretches at a time....

I did God on 1 and Titan on 2 then just payed through hard on 3 and decided that was enough. Given how the Zeus fight went on hard pretty sure I would have broke a controller at some point if I even tried Chaos.

but as for

>All the other weapons are pure downgrades

So, so, so wrong. Nothing's *better* than the blades but they're all potentially useful if you don't suck and level them up

Idk about higher difficulties, but on normal (OP here), the Theseus fight was super easy. Long, sure, but not hard. Never got hit by the spikes. When he shoots, I dodge and shoot. I had to hold my controller a bit weird to do that, but it worked. Minotaurs were easy, all I had to do was hit with lights, then finish them off with circle to get the magic.

Yeah even on hard mode it's not that bad but Titan mode is just a bitch. You take so much damage from everything that those occasional hits which were survivable before become killers and that extra time you have to spend on each minotaur increases your chances of getting spiked exponentially. I went into it thinking it was going to be pretty doable and I got my ass handed to me multiple times instead

Of course the real bugger of Titan mode is the part where you have to protect the translator. No matter how good you are at keeping yourself alive that little shit dies so easily. That part is downright cruel. I had to watch youtube videos of some madlad from south america doing it with no upgrades just to convince myself I could do it. God damn that was hard.

a little protip for the hammer which makes it safer to use, while you can't dodge roll while holding it, you can cancel out whatever you're currently doing by bringing out the bow for a moment, quickly switch to blades and then dodge

Watching a video of chest locations in GoW 2 (looking only at places I've sipped), and raging tf out

There were two chests sitting on top of an unreachable ledge. I couldn't find a way to get up there, but the wall behind them look like a climbable wall. "Okay, maybe I'll have to reach it from some place else".
I leave, gate closes behind me, I save, I see the video. I actually had to shoot the wall to break it, revealing a swinging point I could use to reach up there.
