The big-pauldrons-and-faulds armor look that the japanese liked for their fantasy heroes in anime and games was super boring and often downright stupid-looking. Headbands and tiaras are probably a close second in the pre-1997 bland hero lookbook though. The goggle pandemic hadn't started yet in full, so Akira Toriyama's work on DQII was actually somewhat fresh.

From all those, I'm probably fondest of Will from Illusion of Gaia/Time; I like his oldschool western fairytale look (which fits the game perfectly), and even the headband works. You get a P&F playable character too but at least he's not exactly the protagonist.

Crono's nonsensical design is always a popular negative choice, but my biggest less-favorite-hero-design-to-most-favorite-game ratio would go to Ark in Terranigma, who almost looks fucking AI-generated. The ponchoed version in the overworld maps and cover illustration is at least interesting though.

I've always thought Kain looked awesome because his armor looks like some kind of dragon robot powersuit. I actually like the cerulean/teal they chose for his in-game representation more than the purple in Amano's concept.

Will from Illusion of Gaia. Of those with quiky/kooky hair, his is the coolest and is actually functional (the wind through his hair is used to solve a puzzle at one point). His animation and detail are also superior to everyone there. He's one of the few "teenage warrior/adventurer" designs that is actually believable. Like you could take any of those other adventurers and say they were 36 year old seasoned soldiers and it would be believable (no counting Lucas). Maybe that has less to do with his design and more to do with the detail in the sprite though.

Wasn't that just the shoulder pads American dykes used to have manly silhouettes to own the patriarchy? Maybe it was a subconscious inspiration that's also wildly missing the point, like the gratuitous crosses, pope hats and clerics practicing witchcraft. At some point they even leaned on the stupidity and made them even larger with decorations straight out of exotic dancer costumes.

It's just not a good character design by any criteria other than arguably looking cool (which granted, is increasingly the main focus of character design), and being unmistakably Toriyama (which was understandable given the game's Dream Team was heavily marketed)

It was a collaboration between Jesper Kyd and Raymond Watts . I played through the entire game on a Dreamcast. The soundtrack was one of the highlights. The Kurt and Max stages are good. The Doctor stages are a bit weird with some clunky platforming. Some cool ideas and sections. though that part where you have to hold down a lighter to find each wire... and the fish maze.
