Pokemon Gold and Silver take place 3 years after Pokemon Red and Blue. You got to visit the same characters and cities from the first game and see how much everything has changed. Why did Pokemon stop doing this?

Because at some point the original audiance "grew out of Pokémon" so it wouldn't make sense to have the new audiance (which is still the same 8-14 year old) care about something they haven't known

Have you played GSC recently? Kanto is pretty terrible as anything else but an epilogue for the previous game. The whole region is just a grind until you get to Red.

Because the series was supposed to stop at Gen2 and so this was considered the end of the original Pokemon story, but the money said otherwise.

Who’s the money? What?

After GS they realized they could entice people to buy more games by spreading out the Pokedex across different games. Having multiple regions in the same game wouldn't really work with that.

The only reason they could do it the first time is Iwata came in and cleaned up their shit code to give them enough memory to do it.
He also ported the combat system in to pokemon stadium in a week.
Gamefreak have never been good at developing but they at least used to know when to ask for help.

They really don't have many other games to their name, either.

It doesn't make sense for every region to be so close.
Diamond and Pearl takes place at the same time as Gold and Silver, and while you do want to go to the Lake of Rage when you watch the live coverage of the Red Gyarados incident, that's unreasonable so you go play pretend at the lake near you.

Because that would involve actual writing and planning.

they don't think one iota of continuity anymore, they introduced a fucking multiverse now

and not particularly challenging, as the gym leader levels are set way too low. The balance is just awful in those games.

With the money, you can buy upgrades.

>>8980232
Speaking of help, they are getting it nowadays from MonolithSoft, who is helping them make open worlds that aren't total garbage.

I think it boils down to >>8980104 in the end. You have to recognize that you are now longer the target audience once you leave your early childhood. While the designers will try and do some new stuff here and there, in the interest of making it interesting for the long-time fans (kind of like when super sentai tries new ranger team arrangements to give the obsessives something new for once), the end goal is still entertaining and capturing the money of kids.

Furthermore, consider how much of kanto feels like filler in GSC, and then imagine them expanding that to be every single region in pokemon history. Shit would end up spread so thin as to make the games essentially meaningless. Better to let the games exist in isolation of each other. As much as people have praised GSC, the two regions thing has long been overrated.

Why would they do that?

That's pretty much the point. It does its role perfectly as a small bit of post-game content that also shows you what Kanto is like after the first game. Not everything has to add another 20+ hours of gameplay.

Why bother moving old characters and surroundings forward, when you can just say something like "200 years passed, they are all dead, who gives a fuck".
