Found my old 2005 laptop in the basement this weekend, will this be fine for an XP build? The battery is dead but who cares it will just be plugged in all the time

2gb ram
pentium M 2ghz dual
256MB geforce go 6800
1920x1200 17"display 16:10

sounds decent enough for old games anon, should play 2004 and older games

any recommended games to play?

>> No.8974531

>>8974506
depends. which genres you like? I'd be playing RTS games mainly like age of empires, rise of nations, command and conquer red alert etc. Your computer can play all those x86 games that you need a virtual machine to play on windows x64. You can play any dos game pretty easily too like sim city, any sierra adventure game etc.

Why would you use an old laptop display? I would plug it into a newer monitor.

I will likely do that, its got both DVI and VGA outputs on the back

Sea Dogs 2. Original version isn't available on anything higher than XP, since it has StarForce and Disney are faggots.
MechWarrior 3. Much better than the fourth one IMO.
That's the games I'm keeping my XP machine for, since there aren't seem any comfortable ways to run them on newer tech.

>Sea Dogs 2

I'd also recommend Tortuga: Pirates of the New World.
I played that game all the time during XP days, and I believe it can run on potato.
Maybe not as great as Sea Dogs, but you can marry governor of Spain's daughter and never visit her again, sailing to the faraway shores instead and becoming a greatest buccaneer of the era.

Cave level and kept
Getting fucked. If you get bad salvage RNG do you just restart the game?

Never tried that one, thanks. Will probably go for it when I'll get an urge to sail again.
>>8975348
Sorry, man, have no idea. Perhaps, I've got good RNG, since I've practically breezed through the game?
I remember I've had a particularly nasty mission where I've really had to go careful on my ammo. Tried it many times. One time when I've (again) ran out of ammo, I've tried to stand back and pass it via commanding my teammates.
Unfortunately, they all preferred close combat, and one of them had a flamethrower. One of the enemy mechs' reactors blew up spectacularly, eliminating all my teammates (and all my enemies as well) in one glorious explosion, leaving me standing alone without ammo in the middle of nowhere, but still one target left to destroy, and I could do nothing about it but bang my mech onto it.
So, uh... sorry, can't give no tips. If I were in your situation, I'd probably went for a cheat engine or tried to edit a savegame to give myself some better equipment. I definitely wouldn't restart the game just because of the RNG.

I run on nearly identical rig State of Decay, which isn't even retro, yet run just fine on it. So for /vr/ purposes, you should be doing great

I love late PS3/360 games because of that, even though games like GTA V or SoD came out in 2013 (for PC), they run perfectly fine on hardware from 2007 for example.

This is overmemed, unless you're a high risk target or do something dumb like browse malware sites on purpose, behind a firewalled router, even with a outdated browser, you'll be totally fine browsing the internet.

That's actually a super-computer for games 2003 and older. Imagine running RuneScape in Firefox on that bad boy back in the day.

Where can one acquire a laptop like this but clean/barely used?

It was a christmas gift from my parents in 2005. a dell inspiron 9300. pretty much one of the most loaded non-alienware laptops from back in the day. it served me well I used it from 2005-2011 reguarly.

first put win7 on it make sure its x64, make sure u have all updates, all versions of vcredist+.net framework, you will be able to play later games that r less demanding, plus this will do everything xp will but better. trust.

i use a pc with win7 x64 sp1, a core2duo, 4gb ram, and a 7900gtx, it will run some recent games as well up to 2022

if u like shmups, try darius burst, darius cosmic collection, and crimson clover world ignition,

then post fps this will give a good idea how capable ur cpu/gpu is, will then recommend more games

also teknoparrot arcade games will work fine i played a fair few with a 6200 with 64mb vram, ones that displayed at 720 like nesica versions were slow, u might be ok with 256mb vram.

Definitely not a 17" CRT and also no mode switch in the front, slightly different design in general
Probably E530 or G520, those could do 2048x1536 75Hz with optimal being 1600x1200 90Hz, F520 had a silver front bezel

Luckily CRTs are plentiful and cheap these days, I don't think I'd buy a new one anyways, considering you can get high end ones for free from back in the day with barely any hours on them, but I get your point

in the US most CRTs go for over $100 bucks.
TV crts go for at least 75, even the shitty RF only tv's

>> No.8978584

That's crazy. I remember the days when free CRTs were everywhere, I'm sure some people even ended up paying for their CRT to be taken away (sort of how people pay to have fridges or furniture take away these days). Now they're like gold dust.

Makes you wonder, what other things we think of as worthless/low value now will be worth a lot in years to come.

I still have a CRT TV in my room which my parents bought me in like 2003 or so.
It's missing a volume button on front panel and the channel switching buttons are all glitchy and broken. Original remote control doesn't even exist at this point.
But I still play my retro stuff on it, and honestly, I am very afraid of that day when i'll have to replace it to some chink LCD TV.

Nothing lasts forever.
