>Why don’t games have colours like this anymore?
since 2000s, everyone has had obsession with realism in 3D. "more realistic = objectively better" has been the paradigm of 3D. vice versa, old colorful games were looked down as kiddy and old. this is only starting to get questioned today.
2000s-2010s also had this trend of "color = gay, shades of grey = cool" kind of mentality that is still prevalent to this day.

While I'd say that there are still a good few games out today that still have some vibrant color to them, it does feel like games have been somewhat sapped of their color ever since the 2000s - early 2010s focus on more realistic-looking games.

It's because those games have no coherent art style of their own.
Well, Overwatch is less guilty, but PUBG, Fortnite and countless other battle royal games that followed ditched any style in favor of "lol so random" aesthetics that unsuccessfully merges different things together and in the end you can’t remember anything.

it's true the shadows in modern games are much more soft and realistic. thus even brightly colored objects will be balanced by more muted shades.
but even colorful games like Fortnite simply have generic style and very safe art direction. they don't do anything daring and don't try to make an artistic statement.
also remember that 90s was peak of oversaturated colors era, so 90s games will naturally try to go for bright palettes.

>> No.8960328

I prefer the look of older games, but is there a chance that the look of older games being more interesting is a result of there being a looser less cohesive art direction instead of a tighter one where everything looks identical? I realize this is the opposite of what some of you are saying, but because older games used so many tricks and clever hacks to get things working, I have a feeling a lot of games look unique as a result of everything being made a little differently, instead of every object being made the same way.

Older early-3D era games tended to have more vibrant skyboxes in my opinion and that's especially noticable in Dreamcast games. Dreamcast beaches and forests look fucking BEAUTIFUL. I think that and the slight presence of compression to inadvertedly give an effect of a painting is part of it.

I feel like I’m close to cracking the code, I think a lot of people gravitate for unknown reasons towards art that isn’t completely perfect or photoaccurate because the photorealistic stuff is boring to them. the surreal or impressionist stuff tends to attract more people. when the lighting in an art piece is incorrect, sometimes it can make a more interesting outcome. the reason why some people might like the look of older games is because the brain or the eye could tell a lot of things didnt quite match up. But looked close enough to be enjoyable to look at. This could explain why some older games have a dreamy or uncanny feeling to them in a way that draws people in. I’m

Well I think In older games, there was a more intimate touch in designing the levels, because you couldn’t just turn a light on and have everything lit, you had to cheat and paint shadows on things sometimes, and use floating lights in random areas to create the scene you wanted. Lots of little tricks where it looks really good but isn’t realistic. more of an art diorama than a realistic environment I guess. I’m not sure. I think sometimes there were instances where people knew just a bit more light or shadow in this area would look good, but the final result wasn’t maybe consistent with real lighting and they had to cheat to get the effect that wanted for the sake of mood or ambience. kind of rambling I guess.

you're right, but it's a well-known concept in art. you could make a hyper-detailed photorealistic painting, but it gets boring after a while. theres no imagination in it. it's just "dry" and soulless. on the other hand, you could make a surreal painting that will not be very accurate, but it will be much more interesting and fun to look at.
it's like literary description of weather filled with metaphors VS a dry description of weather seen in a forecast. the latter is art, the former isn't.
this is part why old graphics have this abstract art, surreal feel to them. no matter what you did, you couldn't get completely realistic with it. the more limited it was, the more surreal it felt. Atari games look like borderline abstract artwork.

I guess any of us that got to play games up to the Xbox 360 era or maybe before that, the ps2 era, got to live in an exciting time where the games were both abstract looking, or unique, but also the height of what was feasible, so no one could say it was half assed either. Not everyone has the imagination to capture stuff like that beyond childhood, so they dismiss anything cartoonish or not adhering to realism as childish. The mall looks really good too, like it's full of energy. The sunshine through the skylight looks amazing and the water looks delicious lol.

Another example of bright colour usage and masterful lighting is Gran Turismo 3 from 2001. People play it upscaled on emulators and imo it still looks excellent compared to much newer racing games.

so overall, its the lack of stylish graphics thats missing. I, probably like many others, thought that the closer we get to realistic graphics, the better games will look. at least as a kid I thought that. but really what I wanted was something fantastic that looked like it could be real. which when you think about it, doesnt imply a strict adherence to realism at all.

The newer game looks good on a technical level but I find it a bit sterile looking and the map designs often feel rushed to me. All the Forza games I've played from the 2010s blend together in my head. Maybe it's nostalgia talking but older racing games feel warmer and more characterful.

No matter how mediocre the games industry is on the whole now, I don't think it ever got worse than the early to mid-7th gen. That was the era where creativity and fun just fucking died for a while.
It was the perfect storm of companies on the one hand wanting to appeal to teen edgelords who hate colour or anything that's imaginative in the slightest, on the other hand wanting to appeal to the new casual audience that Wii Sports had bought in, and dumbing every thing down. it's not just this really, it was also the trend of the time. you could see this shift everywhere in the 90s, everything was moving from the bright 80s to dark and gritty mid 90s. take wrestling: it went from neon colors and cheesy outfits to attitude era seriousness, grittiness and lack of color. take music - it went from hair metal to Nirvana and other grunge. take movies—cheesy bright flicks got replaced by rather bleak-looking and serious movies like Matrix and LotR. it simply took longer for vidya to catch on since it usually was lagging behind.
and by the way, it still stayed mostly like this until late 2010s when we came full circle and 80s nostalgia became big. you still look at half the movie posters from mid 2010s, they will look pretty gritty with prevalent greys—and I'm not talking some dark movies, I'm talking Marvel and Harry Potter.

I think it’s kind of a brainlet take when people say that about horror games with guns, yeah you can kill the enemies but you can’t shoot what you don’t see, and a big part of resident evil 4 while you’re new, is learning how to not get hit from behind while you’re focused on someone else. When you aren’t very good at the game, barricading the house in the village and realizing they can break through the doors, windows, climb, etc, is terrifying. and you only have so much ammo at that point.

Fear isn’t just about being helpless it’s also tension not knowing what will happen. if you have a gun and some
Guy breaks into your house, it isn’t not scary just because you have a weapon also. it’s less scary sure but the fear also come from not knowing where they are or what move you should make to not die yourself. In your example it would be scary for 5 minutes until it defaults to the first option so it’s the same thing just with extra steps.

I disagree because enemies being out of view just leads to jumpscares in a lot of cases and if they snuck up on you, it's because you didn't plan for that beforehand. Regenerators are scary despite being in view the whole time because if you don't know HOW you're supposed to kill them, they come across as indestructible. Enemies that are an advancing wall of doom are scary despite being something you always see because it means you always see how much closer you are to your impending death.

There's also the fact that, you know, I'm not scared by the things you are.

that's the thing though—it can. you can go to Netherlands or France and see beautiful places you'll remember for years. but you likely wouldn't want a trip to some generic grey urban shithole that only has office buildings and parking lots.
similarly, you can make a realistic game in a colorful environment, like GTA Vice City. or at least somewhere dark but interesting, like Vagrant Story. too bad though that most modern games look like some random Google Maps screenshot.
games stopped trying to create surreal places beyond imagination, the current year FPS games have environments that are about as imaginative as New York subway.

A jump scare is still scary I don’t know why people pretend it isn’t. It isn’t a movie or something. if you are clearing an area in a game or real life, going around a corner or in a new room is tense specifically because anything can happen. A lot of the tension in horror games can just come from knowing something is there somewhere but you don’t know where. and again I realize in games like resident evil 4 you have weapons but part of the fear is more of an anxious tension because it doesn’t matter if you have weapons if you fuck up and miss, which is why some enemies can one hit kill you anyway if you miss.

In mercenaries mode, that 10 foot guy with the dual chainsaws on water world is a good example of that where it doesn’t matter if you see him, he’s chasing you and half the time your bullets don’t phase him. his movements are unpredictable and you can hear him sometimes and not see him. So it’s scary from a lot of different perspectives.

that being said once you are familiar with the game most of that fear is gone but that applies to basically any game.

Seems like splitting hairs to me, you can argue that if you know you are likely to get startled and you don’t know when, that in itself can put you on edge. People make all sorts of autistic videos hyper analyzing how fear or tension or whatever is created in games. my point I’m making is that it doesn’t need to be a strict horror game to still scare you anyway at points. And I don’t think when something startles you in resident evil it’s the same as getting startled because someone shot you in a call of duty level, because the lead up to it is completely different.

This was not the case in the 1980s. Japan was seen as THE most fearsome expression of technological growth. Their electronics and automotive industries were beating the shit out of the US. Detroit was transitioning from the richest city on earth to a decrepit vassal state of powerful foreign corporations. The fear of emotionless Japanese zaibatsu hegemony was a primary motivator of much dystopian future fiction. Hong Kong conversely was seen as more of a lawless, wild east melting pot. These two wildly different cultures intermingled in western minds to produce the pastiche environmental aesthetic that would ultimately come to be known as "cyberpunk".

It's also interesting to note that Blade Runner was very much considered an edge case, with arguments abounding about whether it was to even be CONSIDERED "cyberpunk", rather than a mere neo noire detective thriller with science fiction elements. Nowadays such arguments are forgotten; in many peoples' minds, Blade Runner has become the DEFINITIVE cyberpunk, and works like Neuromancer all but forgotten (and after so many dismal attempts to adapt it to film, I don't really mind all that much).

Well considering the book it's based on predates the SF movement known as cyberpunk by over a decade, and has virtually nothing in common with that movement, it's an easy argument to make.
"What makes us human?" is not a cyberpunk story, it's a Philip K. Dick story, he wrote endless variations on that theme. Cyberpunk stories were varied, but as a movement it was largely about power and powerlessness and struggling to survive in the margins of a huge machine that will chew you up and spit you out.

it got more and more prevalent after 1998. check most PC games past HL era. late PS2 was often like this. Black, MGS3, Prince of Persia 2, the list goes on.
in modern games color made a return to an extent, unless we talk TLOU or things like that. but you can also see it's not like 16-bit era color. everything looks way less saturated, colors are muted. the contrast is rather low, shadows softened. there are only natural hues in the picture, like brown / blue / etc. it looks like an oil painting, or a color-restored B&W movie.

notice how most of it died very quickly into 6th gen, if we take PS2. one reason was the quiet death of mascot platformers. it was already pretty much gone on PC aside for few exceptions like Unreal, deliberately made bright. A huge number of 5th gen games run at 30fps or less, 6th gen has the most 60fps titles but 7th gen generally ran really fucking slow. Modern hardware can overcome some of these limitations (primarily in the PC versions, but RPCS3 can do some magic on some PS3 titles) but what becomes clear is the huge LOD drop off which higher resolutions show off. One thing of modern gaming that is generally a positive is games are significantly more scalable today than they were even 10 years ago while maintaining good image quality.

>> No.8975168

>>8974993
>the huge LOD drop off which higher resolutions show off
That's why you generally shouldn't play at higher resolutions than what the game was originally meant to be played at. The assets usually just don't keep up and it ends up looking very inconsistent and jarring.
I mean something like emulating PS1 at 1080p, it looks terrible. 480p is enough for PS2, you don't really need a higher res. There are a few games that scale good into HD though, especially if given a proper remaster treatment (think MGS3, FFXII, God of War).
7th gen games have the advantage of being made for HD displays in the first place, so running them at 1080p generally looks good. 4K may be a bit of overkill, but as long as you don't compare them directly against later titles it should be OK.
At the end of the day, it's not the resolution that makes the game look good. Even on the Switch you have games that are pleasant to look at at 720p, but for something like Pokemon Legends Arceus even 8K wouldn't make it not look like shit.

Because you expect more.
Put that same exact color palette in an 8-bit NES game and you'd think it was the most beautiful soulful thing you ever saw. Translate it to 3D and it's just "weeell, that's NICE, but couldn't it be even BETTER?"

This is unironically a persistent problem in gaming and one I've meditated off and on a bit for years in my own work. There's an almost inevitable tendency that the more a game stands above its peers, the more you expect from it, and the greater your disappointment when it doesn't live up to the standards you were hoping for. This can make a game that is in many ways objectively better than all its competition somehow feel worse in your mind. It's a conundrum.

this is the thing that I feel is almost lost from video games nowadays. no more autistic schizo japs creating worlds beyond your imagination in backgrounds like they are gonna hang those pictures in a museum. no more sound guys who treat some random game's soundtrack like their magnum opus album. all of it got replaced by the sterile, safe, focus-grouped approach where creativity is seen as a needless risk and where "professionalism" is just copying whatever sells more in current year.

think of deferred rendering all those engines that use bump maps and stencil shadows that started to appear with the original xbox (shrek), it allows for faster lightning calculation but you have heavy compromises like the entire output has to be shaded and you can't even apply multisampling antialiasing without consuming a ton of memory (this is why msaa disappeared)
diffuse is just a plain texture, where the shadows are handpainted >>8963548

>where did the beach craze come from in the 2000s?
if you were to follow the millennial generation who grew up buying, and playing video games during the ludicrously successful 1980s, then by the beginning of the 2000s we would be in our early to mid 20s. all college kids, or newly accepted 'grown ups' who are hungry for babes and going outside. video games captured that sentiment, because apparently video game makers used to have their fingers on the pulse of a red blooded american youth. and we still liked going out to experience things and having fun in social settings like the beach. and if not, lol heres a video game about it. today, Ive seen video games about anxiety, depression and other bullshit. the media likes to push that instead of 'boys will be boys' and encouraging you to like normal things. probably another reason why this generation sucks

Games do now, again. They have since 2012. BO2, BO3, BL2, Pre-sequel, and 3. HZD, Nier, Bayonetta 2, FO4, Bioshock Infinite, Fortnite, Valorant, Overwatch, etc.
You may not like some of these games but the piont is they're mainstream games with vibrant colors. The fatigue color scheme really died out in 2011, traces of it were still there up until 2014. After 2014 there wasn't really anything representing the old fatigue color style that encompassed a lot of the 2000s, with few exception here and there. Now we're in this homoginized era where everything looks like a pixar art style. It sucks and I wouldn't be surprised if the dull colors came back in style again once people get tired of this era.

Yeah, the only problem is, as >>8960236 said, nowadays we have this stupid assumption that colorful equals childish and/or gay - and sometimes rightfuly so. I mean, even your list mentions Overwatch and Fortnite.
While back in the days colorful meant Macho Man Randy Savage level of manliness and barely anyone could dispute that.
I wish those days will come back one day, because I, perosnally, love bright stuff.

Beaches have always been popular, that doesn't explain the spike in videogames featuring beaches at that point.
I think it was at least partly due to improved physics and graphics, and the introduction of pixel shading on the xbox, Water's a good way to showcase that sort of thing.

life and culture was different back then. game developers and companies actually understood that, however today theyre happy to rehash the same top AAA games for generations on end. games dont reflect the culture or the buyers anymore, its just about brands and big properties.

I'm not American. If you can't tell that a lot of the iconography of "summer" and beach symbology comes from American surfer culture and how it was stereotyped, and that a lot of Japanese pop culture especially in the 80s was based on idealised notions of Americana (to the point of having fashion magazines named after American cartoon characters), I'm going to have to assume you're just a zoomer.

its like chopped and screwed only made with less effort, you use better songs, and you make them worse than they were.

It's mostly just realistic global illumination, even with brown n bloom trend dead the most energetic blue sky in a pixar game is going to seem muted if it models realistic sunlight.

I can see the similarities. The Beach was a great movie. Final Fantasy X also has one of the most beautiful video game covers I've ever seen.

Super Mario Sunshine has beautiful and vibrant colors, and is one of the best beach-themed video games ever made.

Yes, but it's not the same. The game appears overly dark all the time because of the realistic lighting and harsh shadows. Try facing the sun on the horizon and watch how dark your character becomes (almost pitch black), all color and detail vanishes because of the strong self shadowing. Even when you are standing out in the open, nevermind under a tree. Speaking of which, try standing under a tree, or in the shadow of a rock or cliff face. You will notice the colors of your character become washed out as they adopt the hue of the shadow. You also get the inverse, where harsh lighting causes bright highlights on everything, also eliminating colors and detail. Is it realistic? maybe, but it sure isn't vivid and vibrant as early games were. I'm not saying it looks bad, by any stretch. Only that they cannot be compared, they are nothing alike.

couldn't disagree more. infact the reason I got into it was because it actually looked distinct instead of just ultrarealistic military shit

you see a lot more color in games now because of Fortnite and Overwatch. there's lots of games trying to ape them now
