Completely and utterly optional, ALSO Jam has the japanese version of Sonic 1 with the better background parallax. It's superiour to the US/EU versions of Sonic 1!
>>has more slowdown in general in Sonic 2
Actually, it has some slowdowns in some parts the original doesn't, but it also goes the other way around and removes slowdown in parts the original has. ALSO, Jam has 2-player mode without any slowdown at all. Sonic 2 also definitive version and better than on Mega Drive!
>>uses the wrong sound effects in Sonic 3
Nope, and it also fixes all the sound glitches that happen on Ice Cap Act 2 on the original, on Jam you can actually listen to the sound effects without any music stuttering.
Holy shit, definitive versions of all 3 games!

> Sega wanted a compilation of classic Sanic games on the Saturn to introduce the franchise to new players who didn't have a Genesis in preparation for Sonic X-treme's launch (ololol)
> Instead of making an emulator and lazily throwing some ROMs on a disc they actually ported all three games to the console
> Has a 3D "Sonic World" bonus that acts as a proto-Sonic Adventure and is stuffed with series art, soundtracks, FMVs, advertisements, and obscure facts that are really cool to go through if you are a classic Sonic fan

If you were a Sega kid this was basically your Super Mario Allstars (except you got the original versions of the games instead of godawful butchered ones like SNESfags got)

The Saturn literally had a Genesis CPU on the mobo, dingus (the Motorola 68000, far left on the bottom with the circled M on it). It was used for audio processing for Saturn games, but could just as easily be used to run Genesis games in a sandbox mode if they really wanted it to.

This is how the PS2 originally ran PS1 games. The PS1's CPU was used to i/o to and from the PS2's hard drive when in PS2 mode, but functioned as a PS1 CPU when the system was running in PS1 mode.

If I remember right, Sega was all about backward compatibility back then. You could get an adapter to play Master System games on the Genesis or Game Gear.

I feel ya anon, with Sonic CD it'd be THE absolute most kino compilation in history, but that'd mean it being a 2-CD set and being more expensive... at least you can say you can have the whole Sonic experience if you own Jam and Sonic CD.

>but could just as easily be used to run Genesis games in a sandbox mode if they really wanted it to.
It's a lot more complicated than that. There's no VDP, Z80 or YM2612. Pretty much none of the peripherals are connected to it and even if they were the IO map would be completely different.
Just having a 68k doesn't mean you can suddenly run Genesis games.
>This is how the PS2 originally ran PS1 games. The PS1's CPU was used to i/o to and from the PS2's hard drive when in PS2 mode, but functioned as a PS1 CPU when the system was running in PS1 mode.
The PS2 also has a backwards compatible mechacon, backwards compatible SPU, backwards compatible serial ports and a dedicated hardware emulator for the PS1 GPU interface. Pretty much the whole console outside of the IOP is also backwards compatible with the PS1 to some degree.

The pacing sucks balls in 3 Complete. Only an actual autist would want to sit down for a two hour replay of Sonic, and reloading a save file feels like cheating and kills the pace anyway.

Again, this thread is talking about Sonic 3, not Sonic & Knuckles, but even so, that Sonic Jam polygonal cart menu screen is pure SOUL, better than regular text menu like in other Sonic/Sega compilations. It's the next best thing after the original carts, AND, remember, Jam is not emulation, it's actually ported to Saturn hardware.
Also also, I hope you're not one of the Completeshills, because those can't use the original cart, only emulation or everdrive.
But still, Jam has the sound fix on Ice Cap Act 2 and the Time Attack mode, so there.

You only connect S&K after you've completed Sonic 3 by itself. That way, you get the unmodified, pure S3 experience.

At that point might as well just play them separately, that way you can also enjoy S&K's kino intro title screen.
Also, S3 on Mega Drive still has the sound issues on Ice Cap Act 2.
