As someone who never played the Master System until this year, I must say, it's pretty good.
Fav game so far must be Asterix or Sonic 1.

I vaguely recall playing an education Alex Kidd game with my mom when I was like 4. There were questions like 'how many bones are there in the human body' etc. Was it a Master System game? We had a MegaDrive and I've recently learned that it's backwards compatible, that's how I played the 8 bit Sonic games too

br here.
the whole "omg master system is still popular in Brazil!" is actually a meme. Yes we do have a manufacturer called tectoy who has the license for sega stuff and yes they kept making master systems (as well as mega drive), but master system was never as popular as memes made you believe it was. In actual times when it could have been popular it was vastly overshadowed by famiclones (which can't be calculated in quantities sold for obvious pirate reasons, but believe me, for every kid who had a master, 50 had a famiclone).
Master system was mostly the low cost sega console aunts and grandmas would get when kids asked for "the Sega" (meaning the mega drive, which is what kids wanted in the 90s, not the Master)
By the late 90s/early 00s, chipped playstations were super affordable thanks to very cheap bootleg games, and K62 computers let everyone play games on PC for cheap also thanks to piracy (and cyber cafes with LAN)
Master system was never a real mvp as people were made to believe. Sorry for breaking the illusion of brazil being magical master system land.

The thing is, the game was developed for the GG, so it takes into account the screen zoom. Here's an example, the first boss fight against Robotnik, on the SMS, he will simply fly on the upper part of the screen and you can't hit him at all, he won't attack either, it's just a time waster and something the devs didn't have into account when making the SMS version. On GG, you can hit him.
It's the opposite of Sonic 2 8-bit, where the first boss is unfairly hard on GG due to the screen zoom, but not on SMS.
GG Sonic 1 also has more colors on screen, a better sprite for Sonic, more background assets, better sound. Ancient, Yuzo Koshiro's company, was funded expressely to make Sonic 1 for Game Gear. The SMS port was probably something they did quickly as a side project while making the main game on GG. I'm not even sure if it was Ancient themselves who made the SMS port.

For me, those design choices seems more likely constraints caused by the much more educed resolution on Game Gear (160×144) compared to Master System (256×192). For me, that's precisely why I prefer the Master System version and feels like the Game Gear version is a cutoff version.

>le Game Gear version of Sonic 1 is better!
This meme again? We already debunked it.

>The sprites for Sonic, invincibility, and shields were all redrawn to be smaller, to account for the reduced screen size.
>Most stages have altered layouts, from simply moving a few rings around to completely removing or replacing entire chunks of levels.
>Warning signs were added near spike pits and cliffs in Green Hill in the Game Gear version.
>The Special Stages have different layouts in the Game Gear version. On the first "loop", the stages have a time limit of 2 minutes rather than 1.
>Due to the smaller screen, the Green Hill boss flies much lower and can be reached from the ground, making it a complete joke.
>In the Master System version of Jungle Zone Act 2, the screen continuously locks as Sonic travels upwards through the stage, with the bottom of the screen acting as a bottomless pit. This little challenge would naturally have been completely unfair on the Game Gear, so it was removed.
>The first two Acts of Labyrinth Zone have radically different layouts between versions. Most notably, the Chaos Emerald is much easier to get. In the Master System version, the Emerald is sitting in the middle of a spike pit; to get it, the player must collect an invincibility power-up a few screens below, run through a lengthy obstacle course to get to the spike pit, jump in, grab the Emerald, and jump out before the invincibility wears off. In the Game Gear version, it's just... sitting there, out in the open, very near the end signpost.
>The final boss no longer enters a second phase, and attacks with three floor-mounted flamethrowers rather than a moving electric wall. The homing device was also moved from above Robotnik to the middle of the ceiling.

tl;dr: Master version is more challenging and the game had to be dumbed-down to work on GG.

Who wants to bet GG Sonic 1 guy is also the same autist spamming Sonic 3 is better on Saturn than Mega Drive?

I bought the official mini adapter and anytime I want to play sms on my mega drive mini I plug it (and a usb where I have my roms behind) which adds my master system selection of games to another directory next to the original MD games. Same menu, same graphics.

I also have this for the megacd and 32x mini. They work really fine with the m2 emulator.
