Nothing retro unfortunately. Spent an unreasonable amount on a Vita game last month so I'm waiting a bit before I make any more purchases, mostly to not get in the habit of spending money without worry. I do plan on picking up some retro stuff once I have a bit of cash in hand though. Probably Genesis/N64 games since I only recently-ish ended up owning both of those consoles. Being a poorfag taught me to usually be wise about spending.

I've been buying some PS2 games because they're largely affordable still, but I'm thinking about largely exiting from physical game collection and focusing on getting real hardware with ODE's and flash carts. I've come to the realization that it's not realistic that I'll ever complete even some of the series I have partially on my shelves, like the DQ DS games. I'm missing V, and that ship has sailed so long ago it's over the fucking horizon.

I collect horror games.
Most recently I've picked up Ikenie no Yoru on the Wii and the official guidebook for Yuuyami Doori Tankentai, the guidebook itself being something of a collector's item (and also something very necessary for having any chance of finishing the game).

I have my eye on Mad Panic Coaster or Forget Me Not~Palette as being my next purchase.

I'll take recommendations for obscure horror games if anyone has any really hidden gems.

I can't exactly give you the details I got all that shit back in like november/december nips really caught on and are adding the gaijin tax now. But from the math I did do I'd profit on pretty much each item if I resold it ranging from like 20 to 40 USD and item. Just bid on items, go for junk items, go for handhelds. Also pretty much everything there is like japan exclusive, so made it more worth to me. I also put everything on the slowest fucking boat. Buy in bulk.

A promotion pamphlet for Super Famicom SF2. No idea where these would've been used, but it talks about selling points and outlines the general concepts of the game, so I'm guessing it was either sent to retailers to encourage purchases or distributed at conventions. One of those things that's rare but not expensive, because not many people are looking for them.
Regular retail store flyers/chirashi for various games tend to be what shows up more often and are what more people are after.

I can read katakana and hiragana.

I mostly buy JP titles these days for collection purposes, since you can usually get them cheaper (often a LOT cheaper) than an NA copy. I got a JP copy of Klonoa for the PS1 for around $20 back in 2019, when US copies were regularly close to or above $100.

Either way, I mostly emulate these days, so a JP copy is fine for collecting.

I have a Twin Famicom and can corroborate those statements. It's definitely a finicky console and sometimes it's easier to just give up playing if it doesn't pan out well, but once it goes it's REALLY fun to use. Call me autistic but I've always been a fan of the format a game comes on. Cartridges, disks, hu-cards, fucking cassette tapes. Part of the appeal of collecting and playing video games is the different storage media. Just tickles my brain. FDS games are up there for me on level of fun to use. Some people see it as an inconvenience to have to eject, flip, and re-insert a disk to play an NES game that has a seamless cartridge version but something about it just *feels* fun. I agree, the game is hard as shit though. Very fun to play and thankfully my Twin Famicom reads that one a little better than the others so it's a good one to turn to if I'm looking for a hard ninja game on the NES not named Ninja Gaiden.

I emulated PS2 years ago with an i5-4590 and an old ass GTX 650Ti. Worked fine for the most part, even in 1080p. Some slowdown did occur here and there though. Nothing too serious, but it was there.
The problem with PS2 emulation isn't the processing power, it's that the sole working emulator, PCSX2, is a piece of shit that doesn't emulate anything accurately. Instead, it relies on various hacks that work for some games and not for others. That makes the emulation inconsistent as fuck. You have to manually change settings for each game you play, otherwise you get glitches and game-breaking bugs. And some aren't even fixed to this day.
Real hardware is the way to go. The graphics in native res look good enough, especially on a CRT. I have a stack of PS2 games myself and I'm still buying them from time to time, but for whatever you can't get physically there's always OPL.

There are my most most recent ones, I bought some other stuff before but some aren't /vr/ and those were Graffiti Kingdom's PAL release and Drakengard 3.
Not shown are a copy of Gran Turismo 2's JP release and Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift 2 that haven't arrived.
This won't apply to most people but I feel the need to mention it if there are errors with emulation or if you burn a copy of Initial D, I don't think it's properly documented but the greatest hits/the best release of the game is the only one that doesn't freeze when playing on PS2 Slim's. I forget how emulation works with the PS2 in reference to how the BIOs differs between console iterations or what because I'm not too tech savvy in that department but just an fyi if anyone has ever dealt with the black label copies freezing on slim PS2s. The opening video seems like it's streamed in real time off the disc because that part of the game definitely loves to freeze up, but thankfully the game doesn't hard crash and I feel that might be more so related to the quality of the disc/condition of my PS2.

I will clarify that I live in Japan and am playing on Japanese hardware (a PS2, specifically).
In answer to your question though, the PS1 and PS2 are not region free. You would need to get a Japanese console or have modified hardware to play JP region games.
In my experience Japanese games do not have English language support. I'm going to assume no zoomers browse /vr/, so you'll perhaps recall that the schedule at the time used to be of a nature that games were released in Japan several months or years before they were in other countries- localisation in the form of a translation of the text and a rerecording of audio with a dub (I wonder if PS2/PS1 discs would even have had the space for two audio tracks?)- took place in the interim. The Japanese release only has the Japanese language.

I'm a horror expert, perhaps.
If that's what you're looking for I have some recommendations but I think a lot of these games are obscure for a reason, which is to say they're usually highly flawed in some way. If you can look past that though, I think a lot of them have really fascinating ideas.

I'd probably point to Illbleed on the Dreamcast first of all, since that's a game that I think is actually good and doesn't deserve to have been overlooked (I guess the gameplay is a bit unusual). It's quite a ride and one of the most fun times I've had with a video game.
That one was localised so you can play it in English.

Is there a specific kind of game you're after?
I do have some knowledge of obscure games outside the horror genre.

There are some games that do this. The first Onimusha, off the top of my head. Even the Japanese version had English subs and the terrible dub. It's a shame that the original voices got cut from the PAL version, but that one is a botched conversion anyway.

20 years, wow! I'm gonna out myself as a zoomer here and I know how much people hate em but that's almost my entire lifetime so far. What was the import scene like in the early 2000s and what got you onto FDS in particular? I don't have nearly as much time as you importing games. I started importing in 2019 when I got my Sega Saturn. First games I imported were Real Bout Fatal Fury, KoF 96 and Fighters Megamix. Terry was just announced for smash ultimate and having little experience with Neo Geo stuff, I wanted to be able to appreciate the character when it came out since he looked cool and I ended up falling in love with Fatal Fury and KoF because of it. That led me to get a Neo Geo CD that I have a good deal of games for now. Really cool system if you can sit through the load times. People always complain about em but I don't have much an issue with em. At least not any of the games I have are too bad.

Yes, it has English voices in the Japanese version- like Rule of Rose or Koudelka. There were a few games like that.
I can't remember if it has English menu text or not, but journals and newspaper articles the like you can collect in game are in Japanese, the puzzles are also definitely in Japanese. Kind of incongruous with the American setting, they're very Japanese language-based puzzles necessitating making numbers out of Japanese words.

That's so fucking gay and retarded. They fucking buy those games typically on how much they sell them for.
Here's a very simplified example. So if someone brings in a game that they will buy and its worth $60, that store (not saying all stores do this, some pay more, some pay less etc) will likely pay 50-70% of what its worth so lets say $30 they pay for this game.
They buy it, and it goes in the glass case with a sticker of $60 on it. Selling it at sticker price will already get them the intended profit margin that they originally would have projected when they bought it, so upping the price later or after the fact is just advanced Judaism.

I've seen collectors like this when they are selling stuff online, checking the prices every day and upping it when it changes because they want every penny out of it, yet they're stuff still won't sell.

I saw your thread, you've definitely got the core horror games down already. Someone in the thread recommended Haunting Ground which I would also suggest as a good pick up. It's pretty well polished and much better as a Clock Tower-esque game than Clock Tower 3 which was a little half-baked. The Japanese version is very cheap (fortunately for me), but the NA version makes one of the holy trilogy of ridiculously pricey PS2 horror games alongside Rule of Rose and Kuon.
If you liked Fatal Frame I-II, Fatal Frame III is good as well. More of the same, I suppose, but they were definitely on to a good thing with the formula so it's still fun even if it doesn't bring anything new to the table.
It's not quite a 'horror' game to the same extent as the other titles mentioned so far, but for a horror themed RPG I really enjoyed Koudelka. Probably one of my favourite PS1 games.

As for Kuon... truth be told, I haven't actually got around to playing it yet (only managed to find a copy recently). It'll probably be next after my current game. My understanding is that it's conceptually interesting and has a good, Japanese horror aesthetic but is extremely janky.

Actually obscure PS2 horror games...
Hungry Ghosts I think is fairly obscure, but if you want to go even deeper...
How about the Kowai Shinbun series, the Hayarigami series or Kaerazu no Mori? Nobody knows about those.
There are also sound novels like the Kamaitachi no Yoru sequels if those count.

Horror Sega Saturn games...
Er... if you want sound novels I think there's a number of them.
Deep Fear was only released in JP and the EU, does that count?
Maybe not the best console for horror.

I know about the Illbleed remake. I really wish it had came to fruition and the director didn't die because he had really good vision with regard to games. I understand the desire to know what the Xbox version was like, even if it hadn't been finished.

Forgot to respond to the comment about Shadow Hearts.
I liked Shadow Hearts but I agree that it's not really a horror game. Koudelka has more emphasis on horror so you could try that.

We're going back a bit here, but honestly the best horror RPG (and it's not a genre with a huge number of entries) for me is Sweet Home on the NES.

Idk what to tell you. Maybe it's just not a game for you. I liked it a lot but it's not for everyone.
>No
The fan translations are fucking terrible (both of them) so it's probably that. They're so bad that the game can't be completed without a guide.

I got fatal frame on PS2 and the directors cut of ff2 on Xbox. Carts are too high for me so I'm trying to focus on disc systems since pawn shops and thrift stores still sell them cheap. Oh Ive got the tower of druaga on PS2 coming, hope it's a bit more straight forward than the og Famicom release.

think that when you become /vr/ you will realize all humans are idiots and women/children are even worse. there is more required for a meaninful relationship to actually last than a pretty face, you have to have things in common - dating someone 8-12 years younger than you = setting yourself up to fail as you are competing with younger/hotter males & the saturation of attention from social media apps. my current gf is not on any of my socials and i dont give a fuck. im the one she texts, calls, and drops her off at work

its somewhat true
women gravitate towards abusers
not always physical but just enough to trick that reptilian part of the brain into compliance

my longest relationship was 6 years and she was crazy about me, i was a fucking dick- acted like the warden, put my foot down, would randomly take her phone and search it etc

now i let all my girls do what they want due to a (possibly retarded) lifestyle-outlook change;
i do not believe in control whatsoever- if they want to spend time with you they will, if they want to be faithful- they will. i set no boundaries, and simply watch- watch what they come to say, watch how they eventually start treating me, and what they eventually become.

none of them made it past 1 calendar year
