First draft of the ‘The Genji and the Heike Clans’ translation is finished, I'm going to take a break, go back to it with fresh eyes and try to post it later tonight or early tomorrow.

I said before that giving people a week to edit it or suggest corrections would be best, but as the revenge challenges are only 20 minutes or long, do people think 3-4 days would be enough?

>> No.869583

I think a week is probably best to account for people's different schedules. Someone who wants to contribute might miss a 3-4 day window, especially during summer.

Do you have a pastebin account? If not, it might be a good idea to make one. You'll be able to edit your pastebins whenever you want without needing to make a new one each time.

10 bucks for an account isn't so bad. It gets ridiculous when you have to pay for avatars, private message inbox or access to two year-old threads. I'm surprised many people shell out the serious money on that.

Here are some ideas I had for the editing procedure. Much like the scripts I'll be posting, this procedure is also version 1.0, so please fel free to suggest revisions, etc.

- I’ll post my scripts with version numbers (1.0, 2.0, etc.), and revise them based on suggestions every few days (depending on my free time, work load, etc.).

- Anyone should feel free to suggest an edit if they read something they think is wrong or unusual. Even if it’s just a ‘that sounds kind of weird’ concern.

- When suggesting an edit, respond to the original post made by me for the current version number.

- Before posting an an edit, read through the replies to the latest version’s main post before posting: someone may have already suggested a similar edit.

- If the edit you want to suggest differs from what someone has already suggested, respond to that user’s post, and not the main post for the latest version.

- When posting an edit, give the line number(s) from the Pastebin, with the section you think should be edited pasted in green text (use a > before the pasted text to make it green text)

- If any other posters ask for elaboration or are critical of your suggested edits, be civil when responding to them.

- Fundamentally speaking, here will be a week to suggest edits before we create a final version that Abunai will use for the subtitles. However, this may be altered if we move onto longer projects.

- Our GCCX releases are a team effort, so please follow these rules.

>I understand to give a week for a full episode, but for a revenge, it is too much.
There really is no "too much" here. Anything less than a week will be too fast for everyone to get the time to look at it. It should be a week for short special episodes and considerably longer for full episodes. A standard episode isn't just "three 20-minute episodes" in difficulty. It's much more complex. More signs to erase. More precise timing. More people talking over each other. More variety in segments. More research needed for localized game terms (multiple games mentioned each episode). More chances for misheard lines (especially in noisy arcades). We need to take our time.

>> No.870451

So, what are they going for in the DKC2 challenge? Basic victory at The Flying Croc, or are they going to make him suffer through the Lost World as well? From what I've heard, it's not going well at all, so I really hope it's not the latter.

>> No.870461

>>870054
If I can make a formatting suggestion which you may already intend to use, the script should be written so that each pastebin line equals all text to be shown on screen at that moment. If a long speech needs to be broken up to be displayed in sequence, each screen of text should have its own pastebin line. This will help everybody with the timing.

Using the first draft to prep the timing and stuff like that is good, but you should probably make a habit of completely re-pasting the text from the FINAL version only. Version 1.0 of the 'The Genji and the Heike Clans' script is available here
http://pastebin.com/FLFRd2PJ

Please read the editing procedure before editing
http://pastebin.com/r3GepdVq

Some notes

- Unlike the Mystical Ninja script, laughter, gasps, etc, aren't on this one.
.
- Likewise, text that just mirrors what's being narrated isn't translated (if you subtitle it too, it makes the screen too crowded)

- Rather that type full names for spoken lines, I used abbreviations. The key is at the top of the first page. I'll be keeping these consistent in other projects.

- I didn't translate in-game audio because it doesn't really impact the flow of the episode.

- I stuck with PC Engine for the system name, would people here prefer Turbografx 16?

- The audio from the previous play is mainly just screaming, so there’s no translation of it.

- I didn't translate the end text, do people want a translation?

Happy editing, I'd like to have a final version by 9:00 AM on Saturday the 13th (JST).

You should stay with PC Engine, especially since the game was only released in Japan.

The scrolling text that Arino partially reads at the end? Only if you think it won't clutter the screen too much. It seems like it might be an unnecessary hassle to encode.

Just look at Mighty Bomb Jack. Look at Super Mario World. F-Zero. Battletoads. Ninja Gaiden. Lemmings. Could that magic truly have happened if Arino didn't love what he was doing?

The way I see it, there's two things that help in gaming. Skill, and heart/tenacity. Like he said in the Golgo 13 episode, he runs on 100% tenacity. Stuff like that can't be faked.

>>875040

I think we should "localise" as opposed to "translate". So if something makes more sense in English but isn't perfectly true to the Japanese original, we should still do it that way. Of course, since we're dealing with Japanese culture, that has to be dialed back, but when it comes to grammar, I say we should aim for good-sounding English as opposed to a literal translation.

I admittedly don't know much about video editing, but shouldn't it be possible to paste the text of each individual line without altering your timing or other settings? There are only about 300 actual lines of text in the script, so I can't imagine it being that hard to do.

Still, it should be pasted if possible and not typed manually. No matter how careful someone is, transcription errors always happen during typing. You know all of those number errors that the SA Team makes? You know how everybody makes fun of them for those? 90% of them are transcription errors. It just takes one stray finger to type 5 instead of 4. If that's the last step in the process, then that's how errors happen.

A couple of punctuation notes:

- A bunch of sentences are missing a period at the end.
- When using an ellipsis for pauses or for trailing off in the middle of a sentence, you should put a space between the ellipsis and the following word. For instance:

139
>Holdin’ the controller…it’s scary.
Should be:
Holdin’ the controller... it’s scary.

I would also avoid using the single-character ellipsis … to avoid possible technical difficulties with the subtitle encoding. Special characters like that don't always display correctly. You should type out all three periods in each ellipsis individually.

For Zelda games, they have to cut out an extremely large amount of footage to make an episode. This leads to bad editing choices and a poorly presented final product, especially for people who know the games well and want to see their favorite parts. On top of that, to save time, the ADs had to play large chunks of OoT for him. They should have planned to make three episodes out of the game, or they shouldn't have done it at all. Most Zelda games are just too long and too easy to make good television. I don't have a problem with people liking the episodes, but I would recommend dozens of others over them.

>> No.880709

>>880524
SA is the most prolific. Last Continue GCCX has done a few episodes, most notably Magical Quest and Super Metroid. TV-Nihon made terrible subs for the first two seasons, plus both Ultraman-related episodes, and VR-GCCX is the newest group, from this thread itself.

>> No.880764

>>880524
There are:

-SAGCCX, they translated majority of the episodes, you can tell their work by the yellow subtitles. Currently on hiatus due to main translator's work.

-LCGCCX, group that focuses on both Season 17 and Nintendo Channel episodes. As far as I know they are also on hiatus due to their only translator being busy on real-life work.

-Team VR-GCCX, a /vr/ community effort that wants to bring DVD specials to masses. Currently, their second release is on public proof-reading period.

>> No.880837

>>880764
There are also groups that aren't translating the show anymore like:

-Clover, a big fansubbing group who released a few episodes some time ago. They have also collaborated with SAGCCX on Fatal Fury Special, Street Fighter II and Punch-Out episodes. They moved on the bigger projects.

-TV-Nihon,they are rather infamous fansubbing group due to their horrible translations. At first, they only translated Ultraman and Ultra Seven episodes as a joke. Seeing the positive response, they also did the first two seasons. Their GCCX-related output slowed down very fast, think one episode a year. It got so bad, that the goons from SA decided to translate the show themselves. As for TV-Nihon, it's unlikely they will translate another episode ever again.

Here you go, a nice history lesson.

Agreed, I watched the sugoi squad parody subs out of starvation just now. And I'm now watching the second hour of the Ki live challenge without subs. And I've watched bits and pieces of raw episodes from the 17th season even though I don't understand a bit of Japanese.

If anything, Goemon revenge was great but I want more Kacho :<

Make it two sentences. Change it to 'heard that' we. Add a comma after 'again' in the first line. Remove the final comma after 'helpful' in the second line.

I really do feel like this part needs a 'that' in the middle, especially if we're trying to make the narration sound more formal.

>he wanted to be helpful, and volunteered to do the return work.
This should be one of two things.
he wanted to be helpful and volunteered to do the return work.
OR
he wanted to be helpful, and he volunteered to do the return work.

If there isn't the 'he' subject in the second part, then you shouldn't use a comma.

Commas before sentences in quotes, especially in fluid conversation, aren't tremendously important. You can choose whether or not to include them. I would, however, capitalize 'This' and get rid of the comma at the very end of the line.

I know that there are multiple "correct" ways to write this and no real consensus on which one is best, but "okay" is used most often in formal writing. I would list "O.K." as my third or fourth choice, even when writing casually. It just doesn't look proper to me. I'd like to hear other opinions on this.

Honestly, discussing this often turns into a clusterfuck. I agree that 'okay' is most proper, but I'm usually willing to overlook other spellings as stylistic choices.

For what it's worth, here's the Wikipedia entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okay
You'll see that 'okay' is listed first and referenced throughout the article. 'O.K.' is listed third.

Actually, that one and a couple of "level X-X" ones are just single-digit typos which didn't get caught, along with the 36/38 one with Arino's age. They've made worse number errors. In Bomberman, they got a couple of numbers wrong by a factor of ten (2 million and 1 million should be 20 million and 10 million). You can both SEE the numbers in the game and HEAR them spoken several times, but they still got them wrong repeatedly. In the Asia special, they made a ridiculously clumsy choice with the number on that crazy bootleg game instead of just typing out the string of 9s as it appears.

Terms like 'disc' and 'stage' should be capitalized when using them like titles and not capitalized when referring to them generically. I don't believe that 'stage' needs to be capitalized at any point in this script. All of the stage names are already proper nouns, anyhow. OP perfectly demonstrates when to use capitalized terms like this in the pastebin.

Good news: one of those jobs is more official Game Center CX work! So at least I'll be working on something GCCX related . I won't reveal anything until I'm allowed to but just to get it out of the way, it has nothing to do with a new English DVD release. ETA: or an English game release.
