What inspired the aesthetic of the Oddworld games, specially the PS1 titles? they're so unique looking.

Oddysee is my favorite game of all time, I'll try and help as best I can
I'm not sure the aesthetic is so easily inspired by a single thing, but the team had some very talented and classically trained artists, those being Steven Olds, Farzad Varahramyan and Raymond Swanland
some of the dev team supposedly worked on the original Alien film but I haven't verified that myself
if I had to imagine their inspirations though, I'd say probably Dune, Roger Dean (this art from him looks very similar to some Oddysee concept art), and Lorne Lanning was a giant Star Wars fan and he's spoken about it being his main inspiration for a world constantly. there seems to be some Dark Crystal in there too
if you want games with a similar alien setting, try:
>Planescape: Torment
>Morrowind
>Another World

A lot of the design reminds me of the type of the kind of approach to shape and design they used to teach at places like Art Center and maybe Cal Arts in the 90s. For instance Richard Vander Wende (Aladdin, Riven the Sequel to Myst) you can tell he went to Art Center without even reading his website's bio. Paul Felix (Emperor's New Groove and a bunch of other Disney movies from this era) has a very similar approach to design, although I don't know his biographical details so I can't confirm where he was taught. Given that the school had incredibly high standards at this point and was (and still is to some degree, although they don't teach this stuff the same way anymore, exactly) the gold standard for design schools. Anyway since it's located in California, as was Oddworld Inhabitants along with a big chunk of the games industry, it's likely some of the staff went there, or were influenced by other artists in the industry who went there. If you want a window into the late 80s through 90s Art Center design philosophy you can look up Scott Robertson on youtube..

I can't articulate exactly articulate the design philosophy, but every aspect of design is very consciously molded, full value range, interesting lighting, very concise value grouping, hierarchy of shape, silhouette etc. Everything has been "pushed". If the concept art is (expertly) done in powdered graphite, guoache or marker the artist probably went to Art Center because they were very big on these media.

Not at all, you can learn alot of the technical stuff by pirating books and tutorials on cgpeers (the old gnomon DVD series from the 00s is basically Art Center 101 stuff) and from the /ic/ artbook thread. But of course the important thing is to look at a lot of art and design and pick apart how it works and try to incorporate it into your own design work.

lol no, many artists don't even have CVs, only the portfolio. In the industry nobody cares where you studied if your stuff is good.
The big difference a good school makes is 1) your stuff is more likely to be good, and 2) connections and friends.

They are some of the best most underrated games there are. The creator sucks though. He has ruined his own franchise. I am not sure why he thinks he was creating something way better but he's way off the mark with his remakes. It is a shame because he gets to keep his franchise but at what cost? He himself didn't even understand what made the first two games so good.
