story time. when i was like i dunno 12? i was sick or some shit and my mum sent me to my grandmas because she had work. grandma was the type that wasnt surprised when you left the house and came back at sunset. i walked to my local shopping mall because i was bored.

at the target in the video game section they had a gameboy advanced to play. new metroid game sweet. hours must of passed, and i barely remember there being many other customers (thats why i assume to this day it was a weekday.)

i must of been standing there for hours- i like to think a concerned clerk was casually watching me from a distance. this game was fucken awesome! then....as soon as thick fucker appears on screen (i remmeber the tension building up to it still holy shit)....I instnatly switched off the power and noped straight out of that store. I have never NOPED so hard in my life. holy shit this fucker was terrifying.

Bear in mind it has been decades, but IIRC the background is basically the spider's "web". It can only move vertically along the gray bars and horizontally along the green bars on its way toward X.
When the spider appears on screen the green bars spawn in one of many patterns. You don't have much time, but you can manipulate what path the spider takes depending on your position. In >>8940826 for example, the spider appeared on the far right gray bar. X could have avoided the spider by waiting in the center, then dashing to the right AFTER it started crawling on the only green bar intersecting the gray one.

As I said been a long while since I played X1, so feel free to rake me over the coals if I forgot something.

It's the second thread in the catalog I mention this game but fuck it

I got this gifted to me by a friend when I was 10 or 11 years old. I think he gifted it to me because he couldn't play it himself, he also gifted me Resident Evil 3 a couple years later because he was too scared to play it.

As a kid I couldn't make it past stage 3 (venice). Later on I still couldn't make it past stage 4.

I've finally decided to pick it up again and beat just yesterday, reached the final stage. I'm only a few screens away from beating it but shit is hard.

Totally, OP.
This thread made me remember how SMW filtered me a number of times when I first played it as a 7 year old.
Probably the first filter for me was Lemmy's Castle. The Magikoopas made my life miserable, and then I actually struggled with Lemmy's fight. It's funny because I play it now as an adult, after having played this game countless times, and I can beat that castle almost blind folded, but I do remember losing a lot there and was definitely the first filter in the game for me. The second filter was without a doubt the Forest of Illusion. I'm ESL so I couldn't read the manual, and anyway I would not read manuals back then, I just wanted to turn on the console and play away, only interesting thing about manuals was the artwork for me. So I had no idea about the whole red/yellow dots as hints to look for something else. I got filtered at the last level with the hidden keyhole inside one of the pipes, and which you had to reach as big Mario to break the yellow blocks. I probably spent a good time in the forest. And then Chocolate Island had that one level that would give you a fake exit and make you turn around in the map and return to the same level, that one blocked me for a while.
Figuring out all that stuff on my own was satisfying.
