There's also various parts where Nali are set up in traps that you can activate to kill them, and sniping the crucified one in Sunspire rewards you with a megahealth. Obviously I need to make his step trigger taller and fix pathing around the back of the columns. Still, Romero able to stomp through everything instead of getting stuck on wooden scaffolds should make the fight moderately less shit.
The lightning from the destroyed columns will be a bit of a double-edged sword. They'll help stave off the increased number of enemies, but they can also damage you if you're not careful. I'm also contemplating making some sort of healing beam that will pop out of the ceiling and start healing Romero after his health drops below a certain point until you destroy it.
The upper part of the level has also been expanded dramatically, but that's just blockouts at the moment.

Does Quake have console commands that I could use to locate that one missing enemy? I'm so close to 100% completing AD's Leptis Magna, but one stubborn enemy remains and I can't find him.

It is good and every time I play I end up playing for a good amount of time, but some issues I have with it:
>Constant chip damage from fires
>Constant damage from hitscanners (you can get lucky and take out a bunch without getting hit, but even on lower difficulties you always get randomed by some guy in the background)
>Weapons: Because of how fast you get damage you’re best off using explosives like Blood (which are great), but it makes half the weapons novelties that barely make any sense to use.
>Useless items: The invisibility thing is good, but the flash grenade, caltrops are basically useless and the gas grenade is good but locks you off from an area for way too long
>Only one enemy has a unique death animation for your sword reee
>Bad enemy design: Red pant guys are quick kills while red-brown pant guys 360 ninjutsu you and eat bullets

IDK it just feels like a missed opportunity. At best it plays like Blood lite but most of the time it plays like Duke 3D Ninja edition with a few added annoyances

I remembered Quake savegames are plaintext, so I used Python to craft a simple (and very ugly) tool for searching entities with above zero health in savegame files, and print their classnames and bounding boxes, then I used "viewpos" to locate them. A lost Lost Soul was stuck in the alcoves in the Serpentine room.

Like Duke, enemies in SW can dart about in a different direction suddenly and randomly. On top of that SW enemies will occasionally go real fucking fast. I’ve found D3D and SW much more enjoyable with “hitscan only” aim assist.
Blood’s enemy movement is rarely that erratic and is much more predictable. They’ll seldom change directions at random and will always try to steer towards you, and there’s always a set turn speed they can’t exceed. Most of them are also pretty slow. Due to all this, I can play much more enjoyably without aim assist.

The navigation can go 2 ways; it can be a corridor railway of carefully sculpted experiences end to end with hard gates to allow the renderer to eat as much as possible, like Halo or Call of whatever, or it can be a sprawling maze you're expected to navigate and explore. Well, there is the FastMonsters option, which will make the monsters react faster, fire more often, and for Pinkies, move and bite twice as fast, so UV + Fast is basically the inbetween you're looking for.
The monsters aren't QUITE as fast as on Nightmare, but the difference is subtle, also they don't respawn.

Fact of the matter though is that Doom 1 is easy on UV if you have much prior FPS experience, and Doom 2 is only kinda harder. Perhaps you'd enjoy Final Doom more.

Reloading in a Doom gameplay mod only works if the rest of the combat is balanced around it. I take offense with weapon reloading when it's just -there-, like the act of reloading is fast and there's no weight behind it. Or if the guns deal vanilla damage or have vanilla fire rates but still require reloading.
Hideous Destructor handles reloading pretty well, but that's because everything else works around it too: The guns hit harder, you move slower, enemies hit like freight trains.

Reloading's gotta be worthwhile. It's also better if you got some good animations to go along with it.

final doomer+ is a gameplay mod for the gzdoom source port. the central conceit is that you get to choose from a variety of different 'doomguys', each one with a different loadout and gameplay quirks.

the tnt doomguy has a TNT emblem on most of his weapons, and the jpcp guy has a katana.

the pistols can be made to operate like you expect in doom, but they also have a setting to make them have reloads in exchange for more damage. additionally they can be made to not cost pistol ammo and just suck free ammo out the either, but at the cost of damage.

there's also a weirdass way that it calculates bfg ammo and you can flip that back to consuming cells and not think about it. each doomguy's bfg behaves quite differently though, plutonia guts an aoe and the ancient aliens guy's bfg plays the x-files theme and fires a kamehameha.

really fun for replaying good wads with mixed up gameplay.

I still consider it an immersive sim more than anything else. Or like Space Station 13: Really granular and nuanced gameplay backed by a more ridiculous setting.

I still think it's more than possible to make a more fast paced and actiony gameplay with reloading, it's just a matter of tweaking the weapons to compliment that, and to also make the act of reloading an enjoyable and mechanically sound one.
It's why I got I plans for a set focused around magazine based reloads, so the weapons will hit hard and shoot fast, but reloading is going to be something you need to commit to with the magazine based system.

The point is that GZDoom has a bunch of fancy features, but most people get tangled up in those and neglect good fundamentals. Prodoomer has all kinds of advanced scripting, but it's a god awful abortion of a mod with zero good levels. Meanwhile, Boom/Vanilla mappers have to focus on good level design and clever use of the enemy roster to engage the player.

I'm not saying that GZDoom ethuasists can't make good stuff, but as a whole, the ZDoom community is more focused on the technical aspects of development, rather than designing fun gameplay.

Disagree about the flow thing. The shotgun, SSG (and rocket launcher, to a degree) are basically designed to get you attacking in a cadence between firing and evading between shots. We just think of it like firing rate. Its something thats been fundamentally ingrained in all of us for most weapons that aren't bullet hoses.

Much like any gameplay mechanic, reloading can expand on that impact positively or negatively with that same flow. Final Doomer is a great example of doing so, since its used as a balancing factor between damage and applying that cadence to other weapons. Most of the slot 4 and slot 6 weapons retain their uninterrupted fire, while others have a balance focused around their fire rate and damag, with reloading occasionally being used as an adjustment to expand on the "burst fire" niche.

Personally I enjoy it when done correctly because it emphasizes weapon swaps mid encounter, instead of just holding fire and weaving around until everything dead. Like others have said though, sometimes its just done badly but thats more an individual application issue.

anon posted this WAD in the last thread, just played it, I really enjoy the sprawling, labyrinthine adventure vibe. Everything is interconnected and layered and shit, being able to platform from one area to another, switches that open up shortcuts, I like it.

I wouldn't mind some texture variation, just to help navigation, since it can get confusing. I was able to find all three keys without too much of a hassle, but I never found a chaingun, rocket launcher, SSG, or BFG, not sure if they're on the map though. Obviously the encounters aren't fleshed out, so I won't harp on it. Not a fan of pop-up spectres but it's not biggie.

Don't know what to make of the red key area. Kind of annoying, have to leave enemies alive down there until you map it out in your head well enough. Also it's a type 11 floor, so the level ends, but the multi-keyed door also takes you to the level exit so I don't know what you're planning with that. Finally, the megaarmor on a raising platform, just before the yellow key structure, there's no way to get out of there if you ride the platform up.

Pretty good though. Post more updates.

Thank you very much for the appraisal. This was supposed to be the first in a set of 6 WADs with branching progression, lite-Starfox-style.
The damaging floor exit leads along the "bad route", where the next map is jail.wad. The 3-key tower leads along the "good route" to rise.wad. This is also why the weapons progress the way they do—the bad route gives you RL and SSG sooner, but you only get BFG on good route. However, due to the size of just one of these maps, all that bullshit I just typed is getting wiped out for a second draft and this is going into fucking tomb.wad.
Thank you so much for letting me know about that platform problem! Somehow in my testing, I never rode that lift back up I guess! (Or forgot to fix it. No excuse!)

So, I had been thinking about adding dart shooters to 94P for a long time, like Doom 64, so people could make dart traps. The implementation would be slightly hacky (and would require probably a 32x32 hole for the shooter, along with a timed/linked/repeating shutter in front of it) but it would probably work.

Revilution does this really cool thing that was either totally intentional or completely accidental. The first map, the skybox is visible but at no point do you ever get to see all of it, so you don't think anything of it. Part of why I emphasize it is because Final Doomer is actually a great example of doing it right: its not thrown on every single weapon, on pistols its both optional and has pros/cons to using it or not, and among the other weapons that have it its usually a balance consideration while not being overly intrusive. TNTguy's super shotgun has a 4 shell chamber, and reloads after those 4 shots are spent Duke pistol style. The reload is very quick (think its even faster than the vanilla SSG one) and theres an option to allow manual reloading in case you hate the Duke style one as much as I do. In the end that little hiccup in firing for the reload animation keeps the raw DPS of the weapon stay in line with most vanilla SSGs and just changes the cadence a bit. With Heretical Doom I tried to give it a more unique take on reloading by having the weapons require charging (since they're enchanted) but made it so you can have them automatically recharge while not being fired, manually reload to speed it up, or disable it entirely. The recharging also speeds up as you level up, so over the course of the game it gets faster until its near instant. Some people like it, some hate it, so I like leaving that choice to the player when I can.
Funny enough one of the pistols in Final Doomer does something similar to the recharge on a smaller level, the Whitemare pistol's reload (when enabled) is basically a cooling unit and manually reloading speeds it up.

Its not where I want it to be, but development has been on hiatus for a while because of life reasons. I still think its good where its at, just has a lot of bugfixing and polish that needs to be applied, bit more rebalancing as well. It's mostly focused around progression, so a lot of aspects get better as you go. Altfires for weapons, a magic system focused around toggled utility spells (including the tome of power,) max hp and ammo increases as you level, inventory stacking for items (even armor pickups,) a fuckton of melee staff techniques, the Modern Magister class borderes on bloat but is nowhere near as convoluted or pace breaking as stuff like Wrath of Cronos. Also if you decide you hate most of the new mechanics and consider them bloat/op/etc, there's another class that plays more like classic Heretic with a bit of extra oomf.

In terms of Monster packs and mapsets to pair it with, I generally recommend anything plutonia and above in terms of difficulty (goes well with slaughter.) Works well with Heretic, and has partial support for Hexen and Chex... don't bother with Strife though, it works but its not balanced for it well at all (one day...)

The accompanying monsters addon is a bit dated, but there's a built in option to beef up doom's monsters to better match it. Otherwise its a lot of fun with Colorful Hell (just turn down the experience gain option otherwise you'll level up fast as fuck from all the bonus drops) and goes pretty well with sets like Rampancy and Malefactors on high difficulties. Since its more magic/occult themed there tends to be a lot of theme clashing with most of its options, but that kinda ends up tying into "the lore" of the mod anyway.

I'll complete it one day, hopefully things will calm down a bit and I can get back to work on it and get some overdue updates out. In the meantime enjoy this crappy compressed webm of the bfg replacement telefragging a cyberdemon with a friendly maulotaur bro.

The music is awesome, sometimes it gets a bit generic asian but the tracks and mood are great.
Also is it only two episodes and two dlcs? SW is shorter than the other build games? Or is the first episode fast?

I had to play it because SW 3 left a really bitter taste in my mouth.

So how the fuck do skyboxes work? DSDA, software mode.

The red ridge is in the center of the 256px wide texture. The linedef I am looking at is 128 px wide.
Now I am wondering how that picture is generated. If the texture were drawn at the start of the sidedef, I wouldn't get two ridges left and right.
Changing the length of the line doesn't do anything, so where the actual fuck does this thing start drawing the texture?
I would like to have that red ridge in the center.
