Zelda fans think EVERY game is the best game ever made, their opinion doesn't matter a lot. Has OP actually played any N64 games or has he just gone for the most obvious first party titles?

The only reason Mario 64 and OOT are remembered fondly is because people were so impressed that the developers managed to get those games to run on the shit hardware.

PSX has a huge list of developers who managed to use the console's limitations to great artistic effect. I can't even think of a single N64 game that comes close to anything resembling art.

Extreme cope, N64 was the biggest failure of nintendo ending its gaming reign.

Zelda OOT is the most overrated game, not even the best Zelda game. It was the first 3d zelda and most millenials first zelda, look at reviews of the oot 3ds remake, it's nothing more than a good adventure game but with many flaws.

It has its positives and its negatives. I personally think the positives outweigh the negatives. Learning how to dodge attacks (jump+tilt in the direction you want to jump) really made the combat a lot better, but it's a kind of hidden mechanic.
The grab-ledging mechanic also takes some time to get used to. In general the platforming is not very solid, but hey, the same can be said for the other 3D Castlevanias.
On the other hand I really enjoy the atmosphere, the way the game has actual vampires as enemies other than Dracula, and the Villa level is genuinely great. It's just not a consistently great game but overall I like it.
It also received mostly positive reviews at release, it was afterwards that it started getting hate, when people got used to more advanced 3D games and started loathing any old 3D game that isn't Mario 64, OOT or MGS.

It’s certainly not utter shit, it doesn’t reach DMC2 levels but it’s not exactly good either. It’s boring and ugly, if it didn’t have the Castlevania name attached no one would think much of it. The platforming is horrible and the camera doesn’t do too much to help either, although this is a bit expected of early 3D jank. The combat on the other side it’s the blandest shit ever, has none of the challenge or interesting encounters the other games have, I don’t know what NES Castlevania you played if you think this was somehow better. The game as a whole feels rushed, and it probably was given how quickly they released the director’s cut. In the end it’s just another bargain bin 3D platformer but with a popular brand attached to it.

I agree, I never understood why people are often arguing that the PS1 was better. The N64 was fantastic for single-player and had much better multiplayer games for up to 4 players. Seriously that was the most important part, being able to play with 3 other friends properly and still is today imo. There are few exclusive PS1 games worth emulating, they didn't pass the test of time compared to a lot of the N64. Mario Kart, Mario Party 1-3 and Smash are still very fun today and worth playing with friends. In some regards they are often better than their successors. Same goes for a lot of the single player games.
Look at the interest in emulation, it's mainly about Nintendo titles. The only exception was FFVII and the hype for that rather mediocre game died in the late 2000s and is completely dead by now. The reputation was based on a few very well made cutscenes, not on a good game anyway.

A lot of the games don't stand the test of time, especially when one is an adult that is used to good games and other activities than gaming. A lot of the stuff that could hook me as a kid and teenager will bore me quickly nowadays.
The only N64 games that I and by projection most of the gaming friends I know would seriously enjoy playing without nostalgia boonus:

I love the N64. My only gripe with it is the controller, particularly the stick (it's shitty and wears down instantly). I got a GC-->N64 adapter and it makes it a lot more enjoyable. I also have a Hori Mini Pad, but it's made for baby jap hands so it's impossible to use for long periods.

I remember I started posting N64 vs PS1 threads with this exact same formatting and wording in like 2016, and made the Playstation shit rat memes, and ever since there has been an endless flood of identical N64 and PS1 posts that draw on the same themes. Highly debatable but actually not really, it controls better on N64 AND it has more challenge and a deeper scoring system.
The good thing is that both versions are different enough so it's not like one makes the other obsolete.

Agree it has some of the best games like Mario, Zelda, Smash, Goldeneye e.t.c but the graphics it can put out have aged terribly. Was really fun at the time though. Ps1 had about the same number of good games (mgs, tekken, ff, res evil, gt) and a million times more shovelware. Worth saying the 64 leaked in several genres, having almost no rpg, survival horror, fighting games or realistic racers.

Bangai O was developed for the N64 controller. Like it or not, it controls the best using the stick to shoot and the dpad to move. Using the face buttons to shoot on DC works but it's not as good.
Upgrading that much in every level is not possible (+if you want a better score you don't want to upgrade).
As for visuals, I think both games are distinct enough. I really dig the retro tile-based art direction on 64, DC also looks great but for certain backgrounds I actually prefer the 64 ones, like the final level one. Also Bangai O itself looks better on 64 imo, I love all the missile pads coming out from all around it while you unleash the missile bombing, on DC only 2 pads come out of its shoulders, weird change.
As for sound, both games have different music tracks and both are great. The voiceclips added to the DC game are hilarious but I don't think that I'd prefer to play listening to them all the time.
Yeah 64 has more slowdown but that's not enough to ruin the game.. in fact in certain levels it's fun to watch all the fuckery going on while you destroy all around you in slowmo.
Both versions are great and fans of the game should play both. 64 original just has more challenge and enough differences and people who try to discredit it as being obsolete because DC exist just seem like people who don't care about Bangai O as much as they care about console wars.
