8924717 No.8924717 [Reply] [Original]

Some dude has successfully ported Zelda II to PC, with widescreen support, new content, and many QoL changes such as save points in towns to cut down on travel time. He's yet to release it to the public, but apparently it's close to finished, as he gave a copy to Vinesauce Vinny for him to feature on his stream, perhaps just needing some final polishing before release.

Apparently, it was ported from the original assembly code into the GameMaker engine, but as far as I can tell from gameplay footage, it plays exactly the same, and while there are some graphical changes/updates to certain tilesets, the overall style is pretty much intact and unchanged.

Here's some footage:

Nice. It's always good to see some love for this game. The widescreen looks a little too fuckhuge for my liking, but still cool.

Dude's making Vinny betatest for him for free lmao.

Anyway, judging from Vinny's stream, port's shit. All the new areas and changed were completely unneeded and you can tell it's an amateur game designer with how those areas are built like simplistic set pieces with shitty blindside obstacles.

Serious question to OP : what is the value of porting a 8-bit/16-bit [s]NES game to PC, since a Raspberry Pi can emulate all this stuff. Is it the savings in power? Is it mods?

I hate when fan projects try for publicity but have nothing for the public to get their hands on. Especially Nintendo fan projects. Shut the fuck up until you've released it.

She was 22 years old at the time and it was like... nearly 10 years ago? Apparently she's 30 or 31 now, Vinny himself was in his 20's then. Not too much of a gap, as he's currently 36.

Man, imagine getting laid for playing Zelda 2.

>>8924771
Okay, much better. I don't mind widescreen retro vidya, I feel it benefitted Sonic and it's a shame the ninty fandom doesn't have the same type of autismos to do that work for them, I'd love widescreen DKC officially.

At least he waited until it was nearly done before letting anyone know about it, and even then it was pretty low key. Compare this to that one Mega Man X fangame, where they've been releasing trailers and gameplay demos to manufacture hype for years, and the game is still nowhere in sight.

PC ports, when done correctly, are inherently superior to emulation. They require far less power to run the game (I know that's basically moot for a NES game, but still), modding them is much easier and allows for much more to be done with the game without having to work around the console's limitations, and in theory input lag should be better as well without needing to resort to things like run-ahead or frame delay.

"When done correctly" is the rub of course. I'm considering here the Diablo II port to PS4 which, I hear, ports a lot of the bugs as well.

The candle rework is a neat idea but did they really have to make you fight through that many dark rooms to get it? Seems a little unfair having to kill the hammer tossing enemies without being able to see their hammers

Yeah, those hallways should be placed before the boss to (mostly) make sure the player obtained the candle, not before the item room. For every neat new trick, you have one assholish move from the dev (there are many jumps that are borderline pixel-perfect - in an open game like Zelda, after three failed attempt of reaching a ledge, I would either assume I need an upgrade or I'm not supposed to go that direction). There are so many changes to the original game it should definitely be qualified as a fan-game, not a "port" (even if it's rebuild from the assembly code).
