The guys from 3D Realms grew up in a terrible environment. Apogee made tons of money out of EGA games that were basically Command Keen rehashes, hoping to milk that cow till the end of times. It drove other companies mad that anyone could survive on mediocre projects when they were trying to move forward with the tech. They announced Duke 3D as soon as Duke 2 shipped (it was mentioned in the credit scene) but then, they remade the game from scratch. Ultimately a good move. After the success of Duke3D, they repeated the Scott Miller's business model and produced more "FPS full of pop culture nods with a talking protagonist". The next big one was meant to be Prey, and while they were working on the engine, they would be reusing Build again for Duke Forever... except they restarted the Prey engine at least once before throwing it in the trash and letting Human Head Studio develop the game for them using the engine that powered Doom 3... meanwhile they kept working on DNF: one day it'll ship, it's gonna be great, let's sink all our personal money into the project, it'll be worth it...


It's mind boggling. They both believed the game wasn't good enough YET (it was) but they would eventually exceed their standards (they never did). Duke 3D was released soon before Quake, and they knew the Build Engine couldn't compete with the full-3D engine iD was working on. Why were they scared of new tech with DNF?

Even back in the 90's I had a chink cart with the unreleased Universal Soldier for the SNES, and in the early 00's you could download and play Star Fox 2 on emulators, or the Shadow Warrior expansion Wanton Destruction that was found in 2005. And then there's stuff like Dinosaur Planet.

The Duke series has had humor since the beginning. Duke3D was when the tone shifted.

The music, the sound effects, the gritty textures, the violence. It felt serious. The humor came from Duke's one liners and the satirical elements sprinkled around the world. Enemy designs like the Pig Cop are sort of humorous with their cartoony proportions, mohawk and LARD written on it's vest. But the red eyes that glow in the dark, the growl, the shotgun blast to your face keep them from being a complete joke.

Bike container's password is in the trailer, on a notepad. Well, sort of. The notepad has generic text on it. Using it gives you a code in the console and chat log. The missile silos are late enough in the game for things to be not remotely complete, so I don't think the codes are available anywhere. Likely you're meant to get them through an interaction that doesn't exist. Not that you can actually complete the missile silo events anyway. I think General Graves is supposed to be with you based on various prerelease promo material, and you clearly need two people somehow to be able to press both launch buttons at once. The later ones (three or four samey silos in a row, really?) I'm not sure are even complete.
