I don't know, Mario Land 1 hadn't even aged well in the 90s. Considering just how fantastic Mario Land 2 was in comparison on quite literally the same exact hardware, I don't think Mario Land 1 ever really had a chance to shine between the superior console Marios and its superior sequel. That's not to say it's bad though. I thoroughly enjoyed it when I played it, and it brought a lot new to the table, being brand new settings for Mario to explore, a new bad guy, a new princess, and a whole new gameplay type. For a Game Boy Mario from 89, it certainly did its job and succeeded with flying colors, but I can't say I'd prefer to play it over Mario 3 or SML2. In short, it's a quality game, but it's been both overshadowed by its predecessors and superseded by its successors.

>> No.8922386

I prefer SML honestly. The physics take some getting used to, but it's a fun game to just blast through once you get good enough. Played it again when they updated the DX hack.

SML2 just doesn't feel unique enough. It's basically a watered down SMW. The bunny is broken. The music gets grating after a while, which is weird because I love all of Kazumi Totaka's work. It's also piss easy even for a Mario game, with only the last level being a decent difficulty spike. When I play SML2, it makes me think about how I could play any other 2D Mario. It's "technically" bigger and better than SML, but feels pointless.

Call me zoomer but I only played this game recently and it was... weird.
Definitely one of the weirdest Mario games, it's not bad but everything in it feels so off, from tiny sprites to enemies.
But I think the main problem is just how short it is. When I first met final boss, i thought "oh cool, he's probably a mid-boss, so i must be in the middle of the game". And then I beat him and... it just ends.

How did you feel about it back then in 90's, after beating your new game in like 20 minutes?

>Batman on Game Boy is basically Super Mario Land 1-II
People say this due to the sprite size and space, but it's honestly kind of a weaker game all around. The stages are okay-ish overall, but not particularly creative or memorable (the auto-scroll stage sucks ass though). The 2 bosses are the same shit, the enemy placement is a bigger threat than the enemies themselves who are mostly harmless outside of those that can shoot out projectiles. The different guns is a cool idea in concept but shit in execution since the wave beam gun is literally all you need as it can hit enemies above and below your normal firing range, which is invaluable later on. Some of the other guns are absolute shit as well (such as the short-range gun and the bomb gun). The "batwing" satelite shield was a cool idea though and works pretty well as a bit of added defense without being overpowered (as both enemies and shots can still pass through the gaps). The "actual batwing" jet segments were a neat idea, but way harder than the sky and sea pops from SML. Being able to shoot backwards is nice, but the timing on dodging some of the bullshit they throw at you is ridiculously tight at times. They shouldn't have put them back to back either. Music is nice though and visuals aren't terrible (some of the effects are cool for an early GB game as well).

Not a bad game over all, but held back by these wack decisions. Oh, and they should have let you swap weapons from the start instead of having it as a secret new game plus bonus. Could have been as good or even better than SML1 if all of these points were fixed up. As is, I'd say it's probably 75% as good.
