Same dude, though I'm at the second area (or third, depebding how you look at the starting city)
I love all the things to do in this game. Some nights I boot it up and just take pictures of people, or go fishing, or rearrange things in the town a little bit. Sometimes I grind swords, and sometimes I go full plot.
Love how the dungeon has challenges. I always try and beat the challenge medal for a level on my first try. Makes it fun, that way I get to use items sometime, and work on the weapons for the other characters.

Loved Dark Cloud 1, but this one definitely fixed the problem with grindy dungeons, I'd say. Now I actually want to spend time grinding in dungeons, working on my weapons.

It saw a resurgence due to Etrian Odyssey but unfortunately very, very few developers have bothered to attempt to improve on it and a vast majority of dungeon crawlers coming out of Japan are just watered down EO. Just goes to show how much that series got right.

My party would be near-death after 10 encounters (which happen every 10 steps), but you need like 40 encounters' worth of money to heal fully, not to mention you have to backtrack all the way back to home (unless you spend your scarce money on an escape rope or whatever they're called). Depends on what you want out of a game, but for me, Guardians of Destiny has this magical quality in the amount of effort on both a surface/design level (graphics, sound design, FMV's, etc) as well as an adventure level (large distinct levels that are entirely optional, secret weapons some of which have secret upgrades, hub-like regions, and there's a flag system so some NPCs and plot points change depending on earlier decisions, etc). I never played Symphony of the Night until the mid 00s, but when I did I realized it Guardians of Destiny probably took after it with all the lovely little things that decorate it and collectively make a bare-bones action-RPG experience into something worth revisiting repeatedly. There are SotN "Confessional Booth" type moments and then some, I'll just say.

The accessibility barrier is a bit high: the GOG version uses the DOS version which is uglier and laggier than the native Windows version (runs on 95/98/2000/XP but nothing newer), there's a retarded gameplay mechanic involving a curse where you randomly transform into either a lizard (who is great at navigation and magic and is honestly probably better than the human form) or a beast (who is terrible at both and will force you to take piss breaks in certain levels while waiting to untransform) which takes time to learn the counter-curse, and there are a couple of obtuse puzzles and even opportunities to brick your game (protip: hold onto ivory chips for life; in the early game you can rapidly equip and unequip them for instant minor mana recovery, and in the late game they will let you bypass one of those potential brick-moments). Despite the flaws it feels so much more adventurous and sovlful than stuff like Wizardry and King's Field to me, even though it is admittedly so simplified that it sometimes comes closer to first-person point-and-click adventure than RPG.
