this game feels like it could come out tomorrow, it's crazy to think it's retro. the sound design is outstanding, not just sound as in stealth, but the atmospheric music with the holy vocals and such, feels epic to go lurching around in the shadows.

If you said Chaos Theory I would have agreed.

Amon Tobin totally nailed the sound track in Chaos Theory. Easily one of the best soundtracks in gaming period. The first 2 Splinter Cells are really rough. Extremely linear and kinda tedious. CT really opens it up and I'm glad that's the one I owned but still kinda wish I grew up with Thief instead

What's the good one, 6? Never played it.
1 - Blatant MGS clone but more serious and boring
2 - heard it was stupid forced stealth crap
3 - was a pretty good game
4 - tried it, it's fucking stupid
5 - the 2010's nugaming cinematic shitfest

>> No.8920564

I heard Double Agent on the PS2/GC/Xbox is different than PS3/360/PC and one is more like CT and the other is more like nu-game shit. I forget which but assume it's the PS2/GC/Xbox versions.

Maybe you should stop being a fucking retard who keeps thinking only in "retro" and "modern"

What's the appeal of this series?
Splinter Cell 1 and Chaos Theory are fairly highly rated, but why?
What mechanics do they bring to the table that weren't in Thief / MGS / Tenchu?
Like Hitman has the whole "hiding in plain sight" thing.
What's Splinter Cell's unique selling point?

Only played SC1 for a bit - But the setting seems fairly close to MGS / Siphon Filter, while the noise / shadow meter reminded me of Thief.

Double agent on the next gen consoles makes some bad early 7th gen design decisions but it's not as clear cut old gen good nu gen bad as the popular wisdom would have you believe, both of them are pretty subpar overall.

A game doesn't have to be unique to be good

mgs is very broad in its application of the espionage premise, it's kind of like a more traditional action adventure with the espionage thing as a backdrop. Because of splintercell's self contained mission structure it's more free to lean into more specific tropes of the genre. In splintercell you do assasinations, wiretaps, kidnappings, break ins etc.

no, they had the perfect opportunity to make a splintercell metal gear clone and did some stupid sidescrolling platformer instead

The feeling of being a spy agent with different types of nightvision and gadgets that's way more grounded than in something like MGS. Also Amon Tobin's soundtrack in CT. Other than that nothing really.

I bought it, turned it on, took one look at it, shut it off, never played it again.

Sidescroller could've been good if it was something like Mark of the Ninja but the way they did it was retarded

>What's Splinter Cell's unique selling point?
Setting, and up until Conviction, plausibility. MGS takes place in super fantastical version of our world and Hitman limits your role to that of a contract killer working for Killers-for-Hire, which is a silly concept in its own way. You could easily imagine the NSA having a top secret branch designed for ground level espionage in the late 90s/early 2000s.

>2 - heard it was stupid forced stealth crap
Pretty accurate. It's far more linear and relies too much on gimmicky set pieces rather than stalking people in the dark. It feels like a cheap Chinese knock-off compared to 1 and 3. Probably feels that way because it was literally made by chinamen (Ubisoft Shanghai) and not the team that made 1/3 (Ubisoft Montreal).

>>8920637
>What's the appeal of this series?
Same as literally every stealth game. Sneaking around, avoiding enemy detection, leaving no trace behind. Going long stretches of time without the enemy knowing you are there is what's so thrilling about stealth games. Splinter Cell and Chaos Theory also have exceptional graphics and sound, as well as highly detailed and interactive environments.

Yeah mods really are retarded niggers. I like 6th gen too, but 6th gen feels too much like whatever the current gen is. Doesnt feel right posting about RE4 and Splinter Cell on the same board as SMW, ALttP, MMX, etc.

No way nigger, maybe Splinter Cell 1 which has too many drab urban levels. I used to like it a lot but now the only misssions I can stomach from the first game are the first one and the last, Presidential Palace. The second game is structured like an action movie and even if it's very linear it has many memorable missions and it doesn't overstay its welcome.
Whoever claims Chaos Theory isn't the best game in the whole series is a retard though
