Just finished it and its easily one of the best games I've ever played. The battle system made it a little too easy with having all party members available but the difficulty did spike a lot at the end.

It really is that good, one of the PS1's best games

I’m due for a replay soon. It’s a pretty top notch game.

RIP to one of the greatest RPG series of all time.

That's awesome, OP. I've always been into JRPGs but never touched this series until just recently. Listening to a bit of the soundtrack from the third game was enough to convince me that the series was worth playing, and seeing that people went to the effort of doing a full retranslation of the second game really sealed it for me. I passed up Dragon Quarter at the video rental place several times as a kid but always thought it looked cool.
I started the first one recently and just got to the part where you meet Gobi. The story and gameplay are dead simple but I'm really enjoying myself so far. That standing bass sound in the soundtrack really is doing a lot for me.

God filtered hard on 3 and 4. Are you supposed to grind like hell when you get stuck?

I only played 3 but yeah pretty much what I did. I'm sure someone is going to reply and say they can speed run the shit with zero grind but I can't see how it's possible

Tell me about it. The fucking giant dog miniboss just comes out of nowhere, and then there's two godawful giant spinning cube things.

It's frustrating how the battle system is incredibly interesting but held back just by how easy the game generally is. The combo system has a really neat concept behind it but the player never truly needs to look too deeply into it at any point which is a damn shame.

Something I really have to give credit to BoFIV for is that as I've got older it's the only plot in a jrpg that I think I appreciate more now then I did when I played it. It still has your typical anime stuff but some of the themes feel pretty mature. I know it annoys a lot of people but Yuna surviving is genuinely brilliant I feel. It really makes Fou-Lu's whole journey and ideals feel a lot more justified knowing that someone as evil as him can just actually get away with it.

If you haven't I can't suggest enough reading this thread that compares the Japanese and English scripts for the games, really interesting read.

I really liked how 3 and 4 have unique stories that isn't "go to x dungeons to collect crystals and defeat the evil boss".

It's been a while, but there's very hard battle early on in IV against the ... Seven or something and couldn't do it, and it's not one of those you have to be defeated in order to progress the story.

And in 3 I got filtered by the part where you have to train a guy to impress his girlfriend. It's just not fun and I stopped.

In 3, training Beyd was fun in a way. You didn't even actually have to do it well to progress, since you can cheat for him in his actual fight, but you can make him into an absolute shitkicker if you want.

I can't judge you getting stuck though, since I never finished the game. There's a part way up in the final area where you have to "pray" to a dragon statue (stand still), and it filtered me. I never beat the game because of this.
