RCT2 is the only one I've played. From what I gather the first one is just a barebones version of 2 and the sequels dumbed down the business side of things. Am I missing anything by not trying the other ones?

Yes.
Meanwhile Raze pulls multiple Build engine reimplementations into a single package, thus supporting Shadow Warrior, Blood, Duke Nukem 3D, Redneck Rampage, et cetera. So it's probably the best option if you're lazy and want to play multiple of these games.

Everyone is just posting names and links but I don't really understand what is and "open" game. It is some kind of Open Source videogame clon from some very well know vidya? It is the actual game hacked to death to add tons of modifications? It is a base open source game clon of popular titles with nothing but the option to add your own mods? How should I start to get a grasp of this concept?

The only name I recognize was OpenLara, a way to play first 3 Tomb Raiders on modern consoles, and I got it because it got discussed on a different thread some time ago.

>It is some kind of Open Source videogame clon from some very well know vidya?
Generally, this.
>It is a base open source game clon of popular titles with nothing but the option to add your own mods?
Maybe, sometimes.
It's when some nerds get together and make an open-sourced engine/clone for some game, usually able to run the original data files, so the game can run well on modern machines and be extended, improved and receive bugfixes when the original company has long since moved on.
