Its been a whole 12 or so years since I first laid eyes on these scans, I still hope that one day I'll finally get to see all these cut levels in full.

Wasn't this overworld partially found in the 2020 leaks?

I believe so. It had to be manually rebuilt or something and it wasn't exactly like the screenshots IIRC

Over eight iterations of the Mushroom map were discovered. The July 1989 iteration in the OP picture was found, but the tileset is lost and thus that iteration displays as a garbled mess. Picrel is that iteration with an improvised tileset.

It's strange. Seeing it now realized like this, it feels off. I know you said it has an improvised tileset, but there's something else. Maybe it's due to the magazine (?) colors in the original picture, which gives it a warmer look, or also the fact that we're seeing it zoomed out with a huge ocean all around it, which makes it look tiny and empty, compared to the original shot which is zoomed in and looks much more expansive as a result.

I wouldn't get my hopes up too high, anon. The allure of beta shots like these is the fact that your imagination fills in the gaps of what you don't see, and your mind wonders at the things that you do see but are different than what you got in the end product. When actual beta levels do come out, they are almost always empty, flat and lifeless since they are but test levels.

Don't get me wrong, it's still neat to see them turn up (lord knows I almost teared up when I found out so much of the OoT beta shit I obsessed over when I was younger was discovered and reconstructed), but at the end of the day, beta builds and assets are by their nature incomplete. They're not a full game that looks and plays different.

Why the fuck is it always assumed that people want these game prototypes so they can "play a different game"? Like I know that these are just unfinished versions of the final product, I'm not looking to play them, but they're very interesting to dig into and study from a game dev viewpoint. It's cool to see what the devs were building and experimenting with at different slices of development, what they struggled with or what they attempted to do differently. It's like a big puzzle really, trying to figure out how a game came to be (or how it didn't as well), and I think most people into this stuff see it in a similar way.
