8894353 No.8894353 [Reply] [Original]

I want to play GBA and GB games in original hardware (GBA SP).
Are they worth the price and faithful to the original ?

>> No.8894358

>>8894353
No they are absolute trash and will break rather quickly. Buy an EZ-flash or Everdrive instead, save yourself the pain.

>> No.8894380

>>8894353
Buy a flashcart.

>> No.8894497

>>8894358
>>8894380
Is there input-lag issue ?
Are they easy to use ?

>> No.8894506

Chinese bootlegs are made extremely cheaply and can have problems like randomly powering off while saving your game or missing features. It's easy to get fucked over.

Like the other anons said, get yourself a flashcart instead. For the GBA the best option is the EZ Flash Omega DE, for the GB/C the best option depends on what features you care about and what you're willing to pay.

>> No.8894507

>>8894497
Drag files to SD card, pick from menu, play game. And of course there's no input lag, that doesn't even make sense.

>> No.8894519

>>8894497
No there is no input lag, it's identical to a real cartridge as far as gameplay is concerned. There are also extra features but you can choose to not use them.

>> No.8894593

>>8894353
>Are repro-cartridges all identical
Of course not dumb dumb

>> No.8894620

Not worth it. When I was younger I was dumb and bought a fake Pokemon Emerald. around halfway through the game the save file corrupted and deleted itself.
People tell me they're better quality these days but I doubt it & wouldn't risk it.

>> No.8894623

Either get the real thing or emulate it on your computer for free/use a flash cart. Repro carts are some of the most retarded, pointless shit you could waste your money on.

>> No.8894640

There are some good ones, but those are uncommon, and generally just a run of some very specific games, usually rare ones, and normally sold on specific sites.

You aren't going to get anything quality going for repros on ebay and searching through hundreds of available repro carts. Those are made to be as cheap as possible to try to fool people into thinking they are the real thing.

>> No.8894642

>>8894620
Bootlegs are indeed better quality now. Instead of wiping your save, they'll just forget to save Hall of Fame data. Progress!

The only way you're going to find a decent quality repro is if you buy it from a reputable outlet like insidegadgets, not a chink ebay seller.

>> No.8894648

I can understand the novelty of getting a repro cart of a game that was never released in your country and translated by fans, or of rom hacks, but don't get them if you're just too cheap to buy the authentic thing

only if you get one with leaky bits

Thank you for the info, one last question : In the official website they say : "Button Battery replaceable", does that means no soldering needed for replacement ?

Which cart are you talking about?

>> No.8895178

Ez flash emulate the save battery, so you dont need it.

It fuck up the games with clock, but you can modify the time with cheat engine.

>> No.8895232

>>8894353
I like em. Played that exact game on a repo during a cross continental flight, beat Chaos, many souls, many hours in with no problems. Just don’t save when your battery is low

>>8894353
Have some on my SNES that date back to the SNES times.
Played 'em like fuck back in the 90's, then they still work, along with the console.
So yeah, they're perfectly fine

EZ Flash Omega Def. Edition

>> No.8895312

>>8895269
Yes, that one has a replaceable battery without soldering. But the battery is only for RTC - it saves without a battery.
Be aware that the Omega DE is for GBA games. It can only play GB/C games with an emulator. The emulator is so-so.

>> No.8895317

>>8895312
Does the Everdrive GBA have a better GB(C) emulator?

>> No.8895318

No, both use the same emulator.

Shame, as I made an offer for a nice Mario GB Micro and was hoping that people got Crystal to run well by now.

IIRC jagoomba color can play that game.

It broke shantae for me, so you'll have to switch back to regular goomba color for that one.

When I was 8 they sold them for super cheap at the boot sale. Good times.

>The only way you're going to find a decent quality repro is
if you build one yourself. It's not even that difficult. If you want to own more than a handful of repros, it's definitely worth considering. You can buy the PCBs, shells, EEPROMs and ROM burners on ebay/aliexpress etc. You can even buy printed boxes and manuals.

>> No.8895485

>>8895461
How does one "imprint" the games onto the chips? I imagine you would need something that costs hundreds of dollars.

>> No.8895501

>>8895485
Nah, repros just use commodity flash or EEPROM chips. Bennvenn Joeys are pretty cheap and will flash bootleg games.

>> No.8895525

>>8895485
Pretty sure you can get a burner for like 30 bucks. EEPROMs cost a dollar or two each. You can even harvest PCBs and/or shells from shitty games and put good ROMs in them. You might also want to invest in a UV box to erase EEPROMs. They're also cheap.

Or you can go flash (Requires a special loader, also cheap), which means paying a little more for the boards (As they already come set up and ready to go).

I have a bunch of repros, mostly for English translated games. They all play save and load just fine.

>> No.8897297

>>8894353
they're good as long as they're selling them cheaper and are admitting that they're repros. I'd probably recommend emulating or getting a flashcart instead, but there's nothing particuarly wrong about repros in general. Though there's a lot of shady ones.
