I'm really struggling to make CRT royale look something other than eye bleed for use in retroarch on PSX games. it just seems like the scanline effect is waaaay too strong as it physically hurts my eyes - the xm29plus and kuzuromi presets suffer as well - what the fuck am I doing wrong? I suspect an element is i'm using this on a monitor (a 4k one if it matters) so viewing distance is quite small which no doubt exacerbates the effect.

Learn the difference between a filter and a shader.

Also learn the difference between an effect aiming to imitate real world equipment (CRTs) over something doing its own thing that has no resemblance with real world results.

Then maybe you will learn to post your memes with sense instead of reacting mindlessly to keywords like a trained monkey.

There is one shader that looks really good for SVGA modes on Dosbox (glshader = rgb2x), but it looks like dogshit in lowres VGA mode because you couldn't see scanlines or a dotmask on a 14" VGA monitor. It's there, but it's barely noticeable. Original Doom never ran above VGA resolution, so it doesn't make much sense to degrade the image quality by applying a television shader.
A couple of weeks ago, some anon posted a nice reshade setup for a convincing VGA shader, but it's not worth it. 320x200 is crystal clear on a CRT VGA monitor.

There's three DOSBox cores in RetroArch: DOSBox-core, DOSBox-pure, and DOSBox-svn. The first is up-to-date with upstream DOSBox and is the closest to it in terms of features, options and usage. The second, despite its name, is more heavily modified to make it more "load a game and it'll just werk", but it's more outdated and less frequently maintained. The last is indeed old as sin and sees the bare minimum of maintenance and is only around for certain devices that can't run the other two for some reason.

Fuck this game, by the way.

Use "Sony Megatron Colour Video Monitor" shader.
Use the 300 TV Line preset. Anything above 300TVL for 320x240 is a meme.

>> No.8879408

>>8878713
As much as I like that shader, there's some important caveats I would mention before recommending it. Compared to other shaders like guest-advanced, it's relatively lean on options and effects, so you don't get things like glow, phosphor trails, etc. Most importantly, it's a full-strength mask shader, meaning it is meant to emulate CRT phosphors as accurately as possible, and unless you have a bright, HDR-capable 4K display (the kind of display it is targeted at), it WILL darken the absolute shit out of the image. It's a shader with a very specific use-case, and it won't be to everyone's liking unless they have the kind of display it's meant for.

Also, using the 300TVL mask on a common 1080p monitor (what most people in these threads are using) will actually make it look like 150TVL, since that measurement is made with 4K in mind, so there's that, too. If you want a 300TVL look at 1080p, you'd have to select the 600TVL mask instead. I know the anon said he had a 4K monitor, but thought I'd throw that out there.

In any case, I personally prefer slightly higher TVL than that, around 400 (Megatron's TVL nomenclature is a bit weird, btw - by the common way of measuring TVL, the 300TVL preset is actually 270TVL, 600 is actually 540TVL, 800 is 720TVL, and 1000 is 1080TVL).

Bubsy 3D is a fascinating game given what it represents and was high profile for all of the wrong reasons but i;m convinced without at least attempting to mimic a CRT running it raw on an LCD is pure digital vomit.

You have scaling issues on both those shots. It's likely a combination of running at 4x internal res and squeezing that onto a 768p window, perhaps with some aspect ratio fuckery thrown in for good measure. In short, everything's fucked. I would first try setting it back down to 1x scale and see how the shader acts then.

>you don't get things like glow, phosphor trails, etc.
You can't even emulate those effects well with current tech all that well.
Also why the fuck would you want to emulate phosphor trails? That shit sucked.
Blooming is also garbage and a flaw but I kinda get the nostalgia for that I guess.

Pretty sure you can decrease the mask strength in the Megatron shader but if you have a garbage monitor you shouldn't even bother with shaders imo.

>For console games?
Yes because composite signal black magic worked with the game, mainly saturn and PS1 games, also N64 image sharpening and AA.
>For PC?
Mostly so, mainly due to 3dfx cards and so on, but devs made games for Monitors of that time that were top of the line, Doom 3 is a bonafide example of a game made with the top CRT Screens of 2000-2003 in mind due to its lightning behavior.
Quake 2 and Unreal looked better on old screens because dither made the games less blurry but sharp, threre is even old screenshots of those to see why, on modern screens they look like a blurry mess.

Also most DOS games looks better on CRT than pixel shit we see now.
