I still have an infatuation with Sonic even after losing interest in most games. I fel it's not any different from Mario and Zelda. It's a familiar place you can go back to, like you briefly become a child again. And there's enough games in this series that it never becomes too familiar. Because the character and the franchise have been a rollercoaster since its inception. In the beginning Sonic was the cool and hip new kid in town ushering in a new era of games and supplanting kiddieshit Mario. Then after several years on top it suddenly became the the flagship of a dying brand desperate to stay relevant. Then with the demise of its parent company it became the epitome of cringe with terrible games, shit storylines, and characters that ranged from furrybait to edgelords. From this cesspool of media arose one of the most reviled and autistic online fanbases of all time, culminating in the likes of Chrischan who has become an icon of internet culture. Then after a solid decade of garbage it started to claw its way back to the point now where Sonic is considered cool again.
Compare all of this to Mario which has been solid throughout the past three and a half decades but as a result has made less of an impact on popular culture since people love train wrecks and pay far more attention to them than the stalwarts that never have any major incidents and always pull into the station on time.

Because it's an attractor of retards, dorks, assburgers, autistics and mindless people. Keep your children away of that garbage and media world and teach them good values instead of retarded distractions. Rise your children by yourself and not videogames, tv or internet.

I wonder why die-hard fans (besides kids and autists) still stick around for Sonic. As a Modernfag I gave up on the franchise after Heroes and having played Unleashed several years later, I'm mixed on the bootshit and feel it's used as a supplemental crutch in place of a more fluid momentum-based movement for Sonic.
Sega needs to stop trying to reinvent the wheel each and every time with Modern Sonic and just refine what worked in Adventure. Frontier better be the answer to this or else just retire the franchise already.

Think about how strongly that speaks of the IP then considering what you said. If only Sega realized what a great franchise they had on their hands it would probably be at least 3 times bigger than it is now. I also always liked Sonic better than Mario as a kid. Character is an interesting original design, Crash and Spyro are as generic as it gets. Kids just seem to be drawn to sonic games even if they are those free ones on mobile or when they used to have flash games.

I used to be involved in the Crash fandom and boy howdy did I come across some spergs, but they weren't the norm. The difference is Sonic's autism reached a critical mass sometime around the demise of Sega and for the next ten years at least it became the mascot of termianlly online autistic manchildren. MLP took the torch in the early 2010's and as a result Sonic's image has had some time to rebound, helped by the fact that the quality of the games started to improve at least a little.

To dial things back a bit, I'm pretty sure it's just that the Sonic autists are under a microscope already. I.e. some kid makes a video about how he likes Sonic and it gets passed around immediately, a guy has a channel full of him playing Mario 64 with really weird terminology and it only comes into the public consciousness due to the Youtube algorithm.

I guess only time will tell, but my ultimate point is that given what's been brought to the surface already by a few exceptional individuals, what else is lurking in regards to the Mario fanbase? I enjoyed it also. I grew up around Mario autism and I know how bewildering it can be. In the early 00's there were kids writing multi-fic epics with Hat Goomba OCs and conducting forum roleplays involving modern metropolises, guns, drug trades, demons, and other ill-fitting concepts for the series because of TTYD opening the door to darker tones and seedier settings. It was incredibly silly, but I never saw anything that outright disgusted me. I'm sure it's out there. Yoshi attracts some real pieces of work.
