Post toys and figures of /vr/ stuff that were actually released during retro times (1999 and before).
Starting with a classic.

I had one of these and they were awfully fragile. See that legless Crash? I had the same problem in mine.
Also the characters didn't look like they did in-game which was disappointing, but game merch like this being sold at toy stores was a miracle back in the day so I couldn't complain.

I remember not too long ago seeking the Edea boxed set, and scouring the entire internet across sites from multiple countries to where there was a time of like around 6 months where there wasn't any for sale anywhere on the entire internet. When I finally aquired one I was like Indiana Jones level of happy after how much of a pain it was.

It's not the most expensive gaming-related toy, but it's definitely one of the biggest pains in the ass to find.

Thank you! I start by gathering a lot of reference images, then I sculpt the figure in zbrush, 3D print the figure, and then I make a silicone rubber mold out of the print. Then I melt a pewter ingot in my electric hotpot, pour that into the mold, and when the cast is cooled, I blacken it with a chemical (basically it rusts instantly) and then I sand and polish all the raised areas smooth.
The molds are reusable for a good amount of casts, too.

The people that own such stuff are either very old or don't plan on having children (fags/incels)
I was starting a relatively cheap collection of some Hot Wheels of cars I find attractive (Ferrari Testarossa, Mazda Miata, Jaguar XJ220, an eBay replica of the Outrun Ferrari that was never produced IRL or by Hot Wheels and a few others. Then my son was born and after a certain age there was absolutely nothing I could do to prevent them becoming his plaything, I could flat out deny him but then I would just be a retard adult denying his baby son what are literally toy cars also they make him so happy I just don't care anymore. I even gave him the Outrun one after he was 3, he looked for it before going to bed and slept holding it.
Is any adult here mature enough to reproduce willing to tell his son "you can't play with those little timmy those are daddy's pathetic videogame toys and he likes to look at them immaculate on display from time to time and show them to his immature friends".

My son has so many toys I give them away to other kids regularly. At the moment there are two crates with toys in my house. He has maybe three dozens of fucking Hot Wheels on my house and on his grandparents to play when we visit. You just don't know how kids act. Or parents. Him caring so much about the outrun ferrari to look for it among all other toys to hold it in his hand while he sleeps smiling because he wanted it for so long. No regrets for me even if he pulverizes the damn thing.

Idk, I started collecting retro games when no one cared about it, my first paycheck at age 18 before even youtubers like the Angry Video Game Nerd started making videos. Everything was laughably cheap and I bought hundreds of them, maybe 500 in total, I don't even know how many exactly, for NES and all main consoles 4th to 6th gen. Only poor people and very young kids were still playing those games as far as I could tell.
But it just lost its magic after I became a dad, I don't ever feel like plugging the consoles on TV. I do play from time to time but mostly on emulators. Feels like I wasted a lot of time and money on collecting stuff even if I still do like and care about the games. I never even had a display for my stuff because I only cared about playing, and I only bought games I knew I would want to play. But for what? I felt good buying them, but I don't feel good having them anymore. So if I don't feel strongly about games, I care even less about toy cars.
I guess people just get tired of continuously creating and them solving first world problems in their lives with wasting money.

They're Japanese vinyls, actually based on the French Donkey Kong Country cartoon, which was enormously popular in Japan. Pretty expensive nowadays, K. Rool in particular, but you occasionally get lucky with a more reasonable listing. I did. Took me a couple years to get the trio together.

We are the exact same guy. I'm you.
I also bought the Zero Suit figma solely so I can pose Samus with her helmet off. She hangs out in front of my copy of Super Metroid.

would the Banpresto Mother figures count as retro?
They were not released during retro times, but they're exact replicas of the definitely retro original clay models used for promo art of the games.

If that were real, Playmates would have also demanded an animated series to go along with it. To be honest, a CG Tomb Raider series (like Reboot) circa 1997 - 1998 could have actually been interesting.

I always think this, whenever I'm in shops these days, you can just get Mario cups and Sonic Monopoly and whatever. And figures too. That stuff used to be very rare and very expensive ( and as you say, even then, not always the best quality).

There was sort of a dead zone for vidya merch. In the 80s it was very common to see Mario, Zelda and Pac-Man stuff, in the early 90s you could get Sonic stuff, but in the early 2000s they weren't making anything

Yeah, I'm an early 90s kid, so my early maim gaming memories are from c. 1997-2004 which was kind of the deadzone for that kind of thing

The thing is, I would've really appreciated stuff like that as a kid. Especially here in Britain, it just felt like it was a very niche thing. There were many independent game shops, but not a lot of merch. And in supermarkets you couldn't even get games let alone figures etc. It was a different world

It's funny that you ask because that's the one that I have.
It definitely fits on there. You have to remove the neck from the figure to get her head to fit on there, but it's just a tube that normally sits between the helmet and the collar of the suit so it's not gonna hurt the figure to take it off. It looks pretty good too, at least in this fool's opinion.

When I was little, my mom bought me the Dart figure from GameStop even though I had (and still really don’t) no idea what LoD was, but he looked enough like Eiji from Battle Arena Toshinden, so somehow my little kid brain convinced itself that this was a toy line from some obscure Battle Arena Toshinden sequel I wasn’t aware of. Mail order stuff from mags and catalogues is a bit different to Mario birthday cakes in every tesco and asda though, isn't it,? I was also a poorfag dole kid so maybe there was also an element if "can't have that, so not even on my radar".
But it's true that you can get "brand" sort of stuff (like a t shirt with the Nintendo logo on it, or whatever) in basically any Primark or whatever and this just wasn't the case back in the day. You'd pay like £25 quid and it would be mail order, you wouldn't see it in shops.

It's been a week and the thread is autosaging so I don't know if you'll ever see this reply but I wanted you to know you're not alone and I understand you. Once you have kids a lot of these sorts of hobbies feel weird and hollow. There's something about the way they change your perspective on your life.

I still have hobbies, just not vidya hobbies or collections (or mindless consoomerism in general). Building model boats is pretty fun at the moment. Vidya is something I do once in a while to kill a bit of time for fun in the same way that my grandmother would play solitaire. It's not something I obsess over like I did when I was a young adult.
