I just like the design. The red and black makes him look more aggressive and he also fits more with the rest of Ayami Kojima's designs. Honestly, I would have preferred if they didn't take away half of his fur coat, but it makes him look ferocious if that makes any sense. Like he doesn't care about the clothing he has, he just wants to fight. I think this design differentiates him in a good way from Christopher Belmont and Trevor Belmont (pre-COD).

I don't like the designs/story but I think making the Belmonts Scottish was a good idea, I think in the main canon it is left ambiguous. I remember in the 90s the Belmonts were usually referred to as a clan however I'm not sure if that was just localization given their barbariany appearance in the early games.

2 can have Simon die in the ending and 3 was fairly serious with party members being turned to stone/turned into monsters and Alucard in general. 1 had no dialogue at all and is played pretty straight outside of some goofier bosses.

If that compilation of twitter posts that smhuplations did back in 2019 is anything to go by, 1 actually has quite a bit put into its story even if it doesn't tell what it is. The cookie monster isn't even Dracula, apparently, and is straight up an embodiment of man's sinful nature and is actually the curse that Simon is suffering from in 2. There's also stuff like the clock tower actually playing a part in keeping Dracula alive.

Also, just saying, but stage 5 with lab stuff and prison cells is kind of dark. X68000/Chronicles emphasizes the hell out of it.

Europe is getting its shit kicked in by a guy who wants to turn the world into a living hell with him ruling it and everyone in it, which is pretty horrific when you consider it, especially looking at ruins of stage 1. Dude also tried to kill his own son for standing up to him, and in the Jp version, that's after having tried to sell both of their souls for more power. To say nothing about Grant & Sypha's fates had Trevor not shown up, the former being forced to serve the man who killed his family (DaNasty = Denesti?) and the latter having to hide her identity as a woman just to not be burned as a witch.

I'd say the older games didn't start getting corny until maybe X68000 and especially Rondo, and even then, they still had some stuff going for them. Not that it's lost on me how you can say otherwise, but still.

It's a great game. It's like a retelling of CV1 but with more complex stages and bosses, which is a great mixup if you've gotten used to the first game.

You might want to grab a copy of the original X68000 release, though. From what I've heard the PSX port introduces some technical problems like a certain stage's timer being set too low or bugged hitbox collisions.
