So I have been collecting old PC games over the years. I have been wondering how I should take the files off the CDs and archive them for any possible future use.

I assume I don't just open up the CD and Ctrl+X Ctrl+V what is inside. Is there any software I should use or any general info that I should know about?

For those curious, the games I own are:
Half-Life
Quake
Quake II
MechWarrior 3
MechWarrior 4: Vengeance
Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Platinum Edition
Guild Wars
Delta Force: 10th Anniversary Collection
Quake III Gold
Unreal
Unreal Tournament
Deus Ex
Thief II
Warcraft 2: Battle.net Edition
Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos
Descent
Diablo
Soldier of Fortune II Gold: Double Helix
Counter-Strike: Condition Zero
StarCraft
StarCraft: Brood War
Gunman Chronicles
Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield
Serious Sam: The First Encounter

I have been using ImgBurn for ripping PC games which seems to do the job well.

This. You want disc images. That way if the game requires a cd in the drive, you can still make it work.

>> No.8835153

>>8835090
Create disc images, loose files are useless. ISOs are more convenient for everyone, but bin/cue is better for games with CD Audio tracks.

for some, i find cloneCD is still necessary to get past the copy protection. anyone know an alternative that isn't paid (or that you don't need to pirate/use the trial)?

If there's no open source alternatives, then pirating paid ones is your only option.

>CDs can last 50 years plus
>Hard drives last 5 years if you're lucky
>ripping to ISO to archive
BAD Idea. you'd have to buy new hard drives every 5 years, you should be backing up your CDs to new CDs.
or if you're truly paranoid you can get M-Disc 100GB Blu-Rays that offer a 1000 year warranty.

pressed CDs last like 20-30 years in good conditions
hard drive can easily last longer if you put them in temperature and humidity controlled environments, I have drives from the early 80's that still work fine

use tape for archival though, better yet, upload them so people share them, so it's not just backed up on one device but several

I used nero and alcohol 120% for my original cd's and I was able to play them fine but some people say they are not 100% clones of the original. I am surprised there is no open source standard to backup cd's instead of having to use proprietary software designed for win 95.
Its also a nuisance to use with Rhea since I have to use imgburn to make then that special format.

>>8838236
That's why I think its pointless to backup blu rays. You waste so much money of hard drives.

OP didn't say anything about hard drives fucktard. Anyway, I have working drives that have been in daily use for over 10 years and drives offline that are much older. So you;re double retarded.

>>8838245
I have CDs that are nearly 40 years old and have been around the world in my bag dozens of times. A few years ago I ran some tests on them and they had amazingly low error rates. A tiny fraction on what brand new burned discs did.

i believe ISOs only work for discs where everything's a single data track, and not for games that are split into one data track and then a bunch of different Redbook audio tracks, thusly.

what i want to know is how the fuck you're supposed to mount these mixed-mode images on a modern machine; the last program i saw that could actually handle them properly was Daemon Tools Lite 3.47 back on windows XP; everything newer only sees the first data track at most.

>> No.8844776

>>8844769
I just burn them to CDs. CD drive emulators are sketchy and try to integrate itself too deeply into windows for my taste.
Not helpful advice if you don't have a disc drive, but if you're on /vr/ you should really have one.

That's the only answer if you want a copy as close to a 1:1 clone as possible.
You can use Virtual Clone Drive to play the backups.
