Best Final Fantasy game (pre 2000) and why you enjoyed it most

>FF6
My first Final Fantasy game really enjoyed it and will be replaying to after I finish 7 and 9

>> No.880002

3. One of the first games I played in Japanese, and the gameplay really impressed me, as well as the technical step up from 1.

>FF8

I played it during a very chaotic period in my life (quite a few family members died within a short span of time, mother was drinking, relationship issues w/ GF at the time, etc) so I really sank myself into the game. To this day it's the only Final Fantasy game I can replay from beginning to end without getting bored.

It just holds a lot of sentimental value.

I started FF from the beginning, and played all of them in order until the Anthology collection brought FFV stateside.

FFVI was my favorite of the bunch. Everything went together so well. The nice, clean sprites, the awesome soundtrack, actually caring for some of the characters, a fun battle system, customization via espers, etc. The game had a lot of soul. Woolsey pretty much aced the localization thing, too. If he had a bit more time, it could have been perfect.

My second favorite would probably be FFV, because I love the job system, and ability customization.

I wasn't really impressed with the FF games that came out on the PS1. I guess out of the three, I liked IX the most, since it had job classes, a neat ability system, and a new take on limit breaks. The visuals were pretty amazing for a PS1 game, too.

I also enjoyed FFX quite a bit, but felt that it was way too linear, and that the side quests could have been done much better. But that's not /vr/.

They're both on par graphically but I think the color palette of 9 is considerably darker in hue than 8 which tends to have more vibrant colors.

So the color use in 8 would edge out 9 making it appear a bit better graphically.

Pretty much I'm down with anything pre-PS2. 8 was an early warning sign of things to come but didn't concern me when 9 hit. Best and most memorable imho would be:

FF4 - First FF I ever played, blew my mind and showed me what RPG's were capable of and drew me in
FF6 - God tier music, huge cast, hours upon hours of gameplay.
FF7 - Shit got real and it was fucking awesome. Took a risk by being in a more modern setting and it paid off very well. Love or hate it you can't deny it's impact on the series and gaming in general.
FF9 - A return to the classic setting of the FF universe but with one hell of a story and a great playstyle. Not a bad way to go out before the decay of the series.

Oh and I'm gonna go ahead and toss in Mystic Quest in here. Why? Somewhere between being one of the first FF's I played and because of it's simplicity it still holds a a special place to me.

I'm pretty much in full agreement with you. I also started with FF4--it was actually my first JRPG, period. I rented it because I thought it would be like Zelda and was surprised, confused, and then addicted.

FF9 will always have a huge place in my heart, though, probably more than any other FF, even though I'll acknowledge it's probably not the objective best in the series. It's so much greater than the sum of its parts.

V because of Galuf.

>> No.880548

Objectively, FF6 is best. JRPGs are a bad genre, so the only way to judge them is by counting the major fuckups, and FF6 has the fewest.

I enjoyed FF7 the most, because I was young enough to overlook its flaws when I first played it. And if we're only judging the first thirds of the games, FF7 is objectively best.

I don't consider the SNES Final Fantasies the "peak" of Square, even though they were pretty good.

I thought Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG were Square's masterpieces on the SNES.

FF7 was my first final fantasy, and I really enjoyed it for many reasons.

FF6 comes close behind though.

>> No.881984

FFIX is my favorite game for mostly sentimental reasons, but I really love the atmosphere and characters, even if the plot is unkind to a lot of them in the third and fourth discs. The ATEs were a brilliant way of making the world feel like it was a breathing entity beyond what was immediately in front of Zidane without being forced and thus tedious, and it's a damn shame they never made a comeback.

But I'm alright with anything pre-PS2. FFII and FFIV are low on my list, but I can't argue they didn't have a lot of positive influence on the series. FFI, FFIII, and FFV are just feel-good fantasy fun at its purest, and I never get sick of replaying them. FFVI drags me in with its characters and music, and all the playstation games drag me in with the beautiful, if dated, pre rendered backgrounds and abundance of atmosphere.

Yes, I have. And as stupid as they are, not a single one of them wears black. There are no ornate corsets, no fur necklines, most of them wear clothing that, while goofy and overdesigned, you could argue fits into the tropical theme of the game. And the ones that don't stand out just as much, like Seymour and Yuna to an extent. FFX's art direction was fucking sloppy, even disregarding the actual quality of the designs (which sucked)

No, I don't. I think it was Nomura having the chronic problem of not knowing how to pull together a really oddball art style without it looking slapped together at random. He's said repeatedly that he makes decisions for the main characters' appearances based on really insipid reasons; he decided that, during FFVIII, he had a skirt fetish and overhauled Selphie's design to include a miniskirt, he designed Squall's jacket and Lulu's belt skirt solely to test the CG animators, I'm sure there's more. Nomura's talented in the most technical sense of the word, but man, he does not know how to pull together a good design when given complete control of a game's art direction.

I'm pretty sure he did this because Square demands at least one major female character using skirt in their games.

Well, tropical as in South Pacific/asian. That was the theme of FFX, as a contrast to the European and Western-esque settings of past games.

Hence why Yuna looks like a Japanese shrine maiden and Auron looks like a samurai.
