There's plenty of true transparency going on in the game. It only only becomes an issue for the trails behind the characters and the spot lights in the intro stage. Which if you're playing over composite on a CRT it's going to look fine.

It's really not. Just because some games have really bad cinepak encoding doesn't mean they all do. Capcom actually knew what they were doing though and The Megaman games, Resident Evil, etc. all have good Cinepak encoding and the videos are comparable in quality to their PS1 counterparts. It simply boils down to which artifacts you prefer, Cinepak or JPEG.

My hearing is fine. The point I'm making is that examining the samples directly with high quality headphones is not the same as what it's going to sound like when the game is playing with the sound chip applying different effects to it and is coming out of the shitty speakers in your TV.

And yes, the speakers in your TV are shit quality. They have always put the lowest tier speakers in those things, even back in CRT days. The big difference now is that they're even shittier as they need to fit in thin flat panel TVs.

If all you care about is checkboxes in a fanboy argument sure. But when you're actually playing the game on real hardware and the sound is coming out of your TV you're not going to notice it. The change in quality is very minor and it's not even applied to all of them, only some of them. A lot of the samples are the same quality as their PS1 counterparts.

I'm not. I'm assuming people are doing comparisons of samples on their computers over high quality headphones instead of hearing how it actually sounds in game.

And this is the reason why I make that assumption. Over typical TV speakers the quality difference is negligible and over a high end sound system it's barely noticeable. It's not nearly as big of an issue as people in these threads try to claim.
