Ah, I've been playing this. I'm mainly using Terra, Locke (for those steals), Celes, and a third random character (usually one of the Figaro brothers).

Just got Gogo and...well, I doubt I'll ever use him outside those "divide your party into 3 groups" moments, but I'm not sure of what to do with him, which commands should he use and all that.
What do you guys recommend?

>> No.881403

Last time I played I did a "flavor" playthrough where I limited how many characters each Esper could be "attuned" to. I broke the Espers into tiers based on the power of the spells they teach and based on when you get them.

Tier 1 Espers (all WoB Espers) could be used by three characters total. Tier 2 Espers (early WoR Espers) could be used by two characters total. Tier 3 Espers like Ragnarok could only be used by one character.

I'd never call it a "challenge" game, because it's certainly not a natural magic run and I got to take advantage of the stat boosts that Espers give, but it led to my characters having much more differentiation than they would have otherwise. Edgar and Sabin relied much more heavily on Tools and Blitz, respectively, for their damage, and I built Locke to be a high-HP Valiant Knife machine.

I also tried to respect the story when I was assigning Espers--Terra absolutely had to have access to Maduin, for example, and Tritoch/Valigarmanda (because of its reaction to her in the beginning), and Locke was the only person who got to use Phoenix even though it wasn't ideal for my builds.

On the whole I think it might've actually been easier than a normal run--I finished with everyone at level 30-35 or so with ease--but it was fun.

If you're interested, here's my "tier" list, along with who got which Esper in my playthrough. I used the GBA translation for this, so you might have to "translate" if you're using the superior Woolsey SNES translation.

Tier 1 (3 characters)
>Ramuh - Terra, Edgar, Celes
>Kirin - Locke, Edgar, Celes
>Siren - Locke, Celes, Edgar
>Cait Sith - Sabin, Setzer, Mog
>Ifrit - Locke, Celes, Gau
>Shiva - Terra, Celes, Relm
>Unicorn - Terra, Edgar, Shadow
>Maduin - Terra, Celes, Relm
>Catoblepas - Shadow, Cyan, Relm
>Phantom - Shadow, Cyan, Setzer
>Carbuncle - Locke, Cyan, Relm
>Bismarck - Locke, Edgar, Mog
>Golem - Sabin, Celes, Strago
>Zona Seeker - Sabin, Celes, Strago
>Seraph - Cyan, Relm, Mog

Tier 2 (2 characters)
>Quetzalli - Shadow, Setzer
>Fenrir - Terra, Celes
>Valigarmanda - Terra, Relm
>Midgardsormr - Terra, Strago
>Lakshmi - Locke, Setzer
>Leviathan - Terra, Relm

• Tier 3 (1 character)
>Alexander - Celes (probably should've been Cyan in restrospect for the story)
>Bahamut - Terra
>Ragnarok - Relm
>Odin - Celes
>Phoenix - Locke
>Crusader - Terra
>Raiden - Shadow
>Gilgamesh - Edgar
>Cactuar - Sabin
>Diabolos - Locke (for dat huge HP bonus)

Oh yeah, definitely. More fun than the normal game, I think. Next time I play I'm definitely going to do the same thing again, though I'll try to shuffle around the Espers so the characters end up playing differently.

Well that didn't work out. Dunno how to samefag. Fucking hell. I hate the Final Fantasy VI fanbase with a passion. All it does is rip apart Final Fantasy VII according to surface appearances + the compilation tie-ins. All the complaints aimed toward VI can be aimed at VII, too. They are similar games that share a lot of things in common. (more so than other Final Fantasies). People claim VII is shit and VI is a work of art and pristine and the greatest game of all time. Aren't you guys just repeating the mistakes the FFVII fanbase has made? Fuck, VI has little character development, too many characters sharing the spotlight, and a plot that sacrifices development for non-linearity. I've known a number of friends who used to like Final Fantasy VII, but then it became popular, and now they forsake it and just praise VI left and right. I'm goddamn sick of it.

for me it's the ending of the story, the world left in an apocalyptic state, where people are thriving and such, it's a hard world to live in, versus the ending of VII meteor is gone... the world is safe, and everyone can continue living, hell in a better world now that shinra is gone, VII has a happier ending versus the post-apocolyptic ending of VI

cntd. im not bashing VII i myself am a bigger fan of VI but i highly enjoyed playing VII, im not bashing on appearances or anything, it was a good story, great characters, it was a 10/10 would play again game, im just saying the feely end of 6 was more tear jerking than 7

7 felt accomplishing in saving the world and killing sephiroth
6 left me bittersweet and kinda sad.... crying even...

It's just too bad there's no need to optimise, there were no superbosses right?

>> No.881695

>>881682
There are some in the GBA rerelease, but they're not all that difficult. Optimization is kind of fun anyway because it lets you beat the game at a pretty low level for an FF game. My last time through I beat the final boss with everyone below level 30 just because I knew what I was doing.

>> No.881707

>>881682
It's not optimizing, so much as bending the game over backwards and making it beg for mercy in new and exciting ways. FFVI is not a challenging game by any stretch of the imagination, unless you're severely handicapping yourself, so sometimes it's just fun to wreck the difficulty curve even more in as many ways as you can.

I realize it isn't retro, but any word on whether Bravely Default is as good as it looks? I know it's been out in Japan for a while now. I want to know if I should be excited or not.

I'm hoping that it's a great, classic JRPG with a fun class system and a halfway-decent story to get into.

Well, it's a spiritual successor to 4 Heroes of Light, which was fantastic fun. 4HoL was basically a love letter to the NES Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games, and BD seems to be the same thing except aimed more at the SNES era. The team handling this game is pretty much the only reason I still care about Square's Final Fantasy division

I never played 4 Heroes of Light--I always thought it was a little odd that you couldn't directly target any of your attacks. I heard it was really good, though.

Glad to know Bravely Default has good precedent behind it.

That really bugged me for the first hour or so, but it almost never becomes an issue. By the time the game throws bosses at you with more than one target, your damage dealer is the high level mage character who can rain down the equivalent of FFV's Meteor every few rounds. It's a weird mechanic, and probably should've been changed, but it's surprisingly easy to get used to and work around. I really do recommend the game if you liked the NES Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest games.

Also, Yunita is high-tier waifu material, if you're into that kind of stuff. Like a more insecure Agrias

So what did everyone think of the theory that Setzer's friend is Gogo?

>> No.882015

>>881957
I like how there's literally no conclusive evidence in the game as to Gogo's identity. It's like Square knew people would over-analyze the shit out of the plot and deliberately left as many loose ends as possible.

My favorite theory is that Gogo is just some guy. I think any other theory stretches credulity as to why he wouldn't say "Hey Setzer, I'm your presumed dead girlfriend" or "Hey guys, it's me, Leo/Banon/whoever"
