You can use the jets with the C-buttons and that will come super handy when trying to maneuver mid-air, but for actually faster running, you can also double-tap the d-pad and it's more effective than the c-buttons.
Also you can make long jumps if you roll first (down+A then jump again), but I think the game explains that in one of the early levels.
