People who bitch about the time travel usually just don't understand the level design, how the game is a big theme park of gimmicks and you're supposed to explore around them to find safe ways to maintain speed in order to time travel.
Admittedly, its not very intuitive or what anybody really wants to do in a Sonic game. I don't blame people for not enjoying CD, its like biting into a chocolate bar and tasting cheddar.

Another factor to have into account is that like 90% of people who have played Sonic CD nowadays have played the HD romhack by Taxman, which removed the timer reset mechanic, which was a vital part for exploring the big levels.

Sonic CD is the true successor to Sonic 1, in the sense that you really get rewarded for mastering the speed and physics, but at the same time bad players can cruise through the game using the casual paths in levels.

This is what every idiot who claims "Sonic isn't fast" or "you get punished for going fast" don't get about the game design. It's not about going fast all the time, it's about going fast and mastering the physics in the right places and find the rewards when doing so. I think Adventure and it's fast "press forward to go fast and win" design ruined how people see Sonic.

sa1 has plenty of bits where you can use the physics to sequence break/find secrets and levels like speed highway and red mountain have plenty of alternate paths like the classics. secret rings is when the series really became hold forward to win though yeah i could see how sa2 planted the seeds. really wish they never bothered with trying to get 60 fps on dreamcast cause i think that's the real reason its so much more linear than its prequel and it seems post-dreamcast sonic team learned all the wrong lessons from it.

its cope that the game they like might contain politics they don't. though 'nature vs technology' is a misinterpretation imo. its moreso about exploiting nature vs working with it, which is why the good futures still contain advanced tech, just not at the expense of the environment. doesn't help with shit like anprim feudalistic satam muddying the waters

>> No.8809975

No, in fact it's a lot of things that are anti-Sonic yet it turned out good anyways. Sonic physics aren't made for exploration, but that's what the game wants you to do more than anything. The level design suffers when it comes to just speeding through like a normal Sonic game, but that's because the levels are fully traversable front to back. It's an incredibly well designed game, but it isn't Sonic-y at all.

>> No.8810004

>>8809975
exploration using the speed and physics is pretty much entirely what makes sonic interesting lol. its just that the other genesis games use it more cleverly and more importantly keeps it optional for more skilled players whereas cd awkwardly forces you to dick around everywhere otherwise you'll just unsatisfyingly blow through every level in five seconds. you have to force yourself to play the levels how they're supposed to be played. doesn't help that the level gimmicks themselves are either tepid and unmemorable or just outright annoying, the latter of which feeding into this idea that sonic isn't meant for exploration despite the game constantly demanding it.
