Just download Ur-Quan Masters and jump straight in.

It's not nearly as complicated as it looks.Simple RPG style exploration with Asteroids style combat. It's addictive and fun as hell.

The hardest portion of the game is getting used to the ship controls. I prefer Starflight because it is much easier to control them.

The flagships controls suck at first because you have no thrusters or turning jets. It's fine later on.

Asteroids has realistic Newtonian physics. SC2 has unrealistic air resistance/maximum speed in space, which makes it much easier to control.
