Is this actually a good game? I find realistic sports games boring, so I'm probably not one to judge

>> No.8800130

Yes

Yes but AI can be bullshit. NBA Hangtime is even more fun mechanics-wise, but the AI is even more bullshit.

NBA Jam isn't really a realistic sports game at all. More of an arcade sports game. Pretty fun, I can't think of very many fun basketball video games but NBA Jam is definitely one of them

Arcade and arcade-y sports games fucking rule.

Pro tip: avoid the American PS1 version. It has broken AI which is absolutelly ruthless even on easy difficulty. The Japanese version (which contains no Japanese language) is a later build with fixed AI and it is the best 32-bit console port.

No. Boring, normie trash. God, I hated when friends played this. All these other games we could play that spark the imagination so much more and you pick sportsketball. Wrestling games suck too. Unless it's on a board of some kind or involves Mike Tyson, all sports games can fuck off.

Protip: The programmer was a Pistons fan. If you are playing the Bulls who were the Pistons rival at the time, and you take a shot from anywhere on the court as time is running out, it will always go in.

Yes, NBA Jam Tournament Edition on the Genesis is the one to play. Hangtime is excellent also. A great game on its own, but you really need to play against someone to have fun.

As long as we're talking fun, arcadey sports games, I want to throw this out there because this game could use more exposure. Base Wars is a baseball league sim released by Konami under their Ultra label in 1991. For all intents and purposes, it's a standard baseball game of its time, but with a twist, the teams are all made up of death dealing cyborgs. You can pick one of ten teams, or customize names for two of your own, and play through an editable Pennant mode with X number of games. You can further modify your teams by purchasing upgrades that make them run faster, hit harder, and catch easier. The nuance doesn't stop there, because once in game you'll find that instead of being tagged out, you get to fight for it. Combat plays like a belt scroller, and your attack options vary between what weapons you equip them with, and their cyborg model (Tanks can charge and run over opponents, M.Cycles can do a spinning cartwheel kick, etc..) You can model your team to be more effective ball players or pit fighters depending on your play style.

Tl;dr, this game is Bases Loaded meets Armored Core.

It's a 90s Midway arcade game so it seems like there must be something seriously wrong with it, but hell if I know what it could be. I only know that it's a lot of fun.

NBA Hangtime was the one I loved and played a lot more. I think it was a spiritual successor to Jam too.

But Jam is of course iconic and still referenced to this day. Kind of the original NBA Street. I started preferring simulation NBA games in the 2000s though.

Every time this is mentioned I have to give credit to David Stern. EA wanted to do the same with NBA but he refused and said he wants there to be choices. Turned out to be a great decision as NBA Live really went down the drain. And the thing is NBA Live was my favorite game in the mid 2000s despite some glaring flaws. Shame what happened to it.

Are you into the actual sports though? Because people who are generally like sims and the ones who only like arcades only generally don't care for sports. I like both, and also have been into sports majority of my life. Only care about basketball these days though which is the sport I got into first.

I just don't like realistic sports sims. Wasn't into them during the 6th gen and I'm damn sure not now. We can play some Mutant Football League or even Wii Sports though

On another note I want to revisit pic related soon. Will probably play the gamecube port on my Wii.
