I resent that every time I look up an old game on YouTube now, I have to be ready to find a better video if one of these stupid filters is used, and I have to be ready with my aspect ratio changing browser plugin in case the idiot uploader decided that absolutely everything must be in 16:9. And even when they do use a tolerable filter, it's ALWAYS just one of those generic blurring ones, not something that actually looks good. Well except in the case of Game Boy games - some video creators do actually use authentic-looking Game Boy filters. But I've seen nice-looking filters on absolutely no other emulated systems, for some reason.

N64 and PSX videos are the worst. Idiots can't get the idea that aspect ratios even exist through their stupid heads, and way too many of them think that higher resolution means better graphics so they turn on that emulator feature too.

It was created in the 90's for very underpowered PC's so it's a very simple filter, also you're not supposed to see it so zoomed in. DKC actually looks pretty good with SuperEagle when you see the entire screen from a reasonable distance.
Even back then people who were actually playing the games at the same time they were emulating thought sharp pixelated unfiltered games looked wrong

I'd say the latter. Like other anons have said, early on in the history of emulation most people either used bilinear filtering or use one of the classic filters such as 2xSaI, SuperEagle, etc. In fact, I recall whenever I downloaded an emulator, they almost always defaulted to use bilinear filtering, and filters were touted as improvements or enhancements.

I think what happened, and what ultimately got filters to become passe, including bilinear, was the switch from CRT to LCD monitors. The classic filters were made for CRTs, usually for playing at 480p i.e. 2x scale, but LCDs, being fixed resolution displays, couldn't do them justice, and they looked like shit as a result, or in the case of bilinear, looked even blurrier since they're scaling much higher. So you had a period of roughly ten years or so between the mass switchover to LCD tech and when fancier shaders arrived where people just decided to stick to nearest neighbor because that's what looked best on LCDs.

It's also worth remembering that filters like 2xSal and SuperEagle were popular in an era of low resolution / definition CRT monitors.

These days with good quality flat screens, seeing "raw" square integer pixels can be more appealing.
"Oversampling" upscaling for video game art is also pretty appealing, with a high enough resolution display it can preserve the look of integer scaling, with no sort of bilinear blurring.
In retroarch, the sharp-bilinear-2x-prescale filter does this nicely.

Seems like sharp-bilinear and sharp-bilinear-simple are less blurry on 1080p. I cycled between sharp-bilinear, sharp-bilinear-simple, sharp-bilinear-2x-prescale with a hotkey to compare. I'm not sure what prescale the regular and simple versions are using but it automatically chooses 2x/3x/4x depending on resolution and display.

No it doesn't. These empiric filters only work on low color graphics like on NES. DKC is photorealistic graphics (it isn't a praise) so it does look much better in natural filters (bicubic etc). Even better than pixelated.
