Quite a few games with PS2 as lead platform being ported to Xbox with missing graphical effects, sometimes same happened with ports to PC as well.
There's been a few interviews that mentioned this over the years and apparently the fancy vector units on the PS2 could be used for all sorts of cool framebuffer effects at basically no cost to performance but porting them was a pain in the ass so they often ended up just being omitted from other versions.

Ehhh. 1st party/lead platform games had some pretty fantastic looking water, shaders, and other effects thanks to its programmable TEV. It just didn't fare well with multiplat shit, especially if it was made by western troglodytes. Unlike the Xbox, which was Chad enough to bruteforce things, the GC didn't handle code/graphics ported from the PS2 very well. Just as the PS2 shat the bed on games developed for the GC. PS2 was definitely the maze architecture of its gen. 2 parallel VPUs synched to the CPU is some serious puzzle shit only a little easier than the Saturn was last gen. I found mostly its exclusives, or original games before ports at least, looked a generation ahead of the games it got that were developed simultaneously for all systems or ported in PS2's direction, which frequently looked worst of all versions (giving tons of players the false idea that the hardware power ranking worked XBox > GCN > PS2).

My theory is that in those circumstances they would write a single straightforward codebase that could just run normal (PC-like) on XBox and Gamecube with an actual single-threaded CPU and GPU arrangement, but would just use part of the PS2's resources so that it could just work the same with the least re-writing of game code: minimal use of parallel processing features. That would have been easiest by far and probably the only way to stay in budget for many of them. If you make a sports game you have to churn out every year, you do this for sure, no contest.

Also one full year is nothing. There was a 4 year gap between the PS1 and the DC which was justified by the performance leap. And sometimes it doesn't matter at all. Despite being 2 years newer than the mega drive and 5 years newer than the Amiga, the snes was inferior to them in many ways. NES was inferior to the C64 despite being more than a year newer. More than technological gap, it's a matter of how much the company is willing to spend on a product.

It’s hard to pick a “winner” that gen, but it’s easy to pick a loser; The Gamecube.
Xbox had an absolute fuckton of exclusive first party games, Japanese and Western.
Only snoyniggers think original Xbox had no games. They only had a PS2 and didn’t ever care to browse the Xbox library, therefore they think only PS2 had games. “I didn’t own this so it didn’t exist.” This is the thought process behind these posts. I remember kids not caring about Xbox games simply because they didn’t have one, they only knew Halo, and now these children are posting in /vr/ as manchildren.
Xbox had: Halo, Halo 2, Breakdown, JSRF, Blood Wake, Crimson Skies HRTR, Fable, Morrowind, Crazy Taxi 3, DoA3, Jade Empire, KOTOR 1+2, Riddick, Conker, Ninja Gaiden… those are just the must plays I can name off the top of my head (I also owned them all), there’s a lot more.
Ultimately PS2 had a larger exclusive library, but original Xbox burst in swinging, and many of those games are too advanced to have ran on a PS2, especially something like Riddick. That plus the fact almost everything looked and played better on Xbox made it an attractive package.

XBox didn't go full HD until the XBone because of the limitations of them using DVD as their physical medium. They're a whole generation behind Sony's bluray in that because of it, and with multiplats they routinely fucked Sony by getting devs to do games for the 360 as the native system while the PS3 just got ports beneath what the PS3 could actually do.

I prefer the DC game over the PS2 version visually. The PS2 game has some nice visual effect and lighting upgrades. But it always looked washed out to me. Dead or Alive 2 Ultimate does show off how powerful the Xbox was in comparison to the PS2. The Xbox was a real beast of a console with its 733MHz coppermine CPU that was similar to some of the laptop CPU's from that time period. It's a customised CPU but intel did sell desktop/ laptop equivalents. , and a GeForce3 that was modified to be closer to a GeForce 4. And 64MB pool of RAM. In 2001, I had a GeForce 2 in my PC with 64MB of VRAM and 128MB of system RAM and a Pentium 533MHz CPU. The Xbox really didn't look to bad in comparison.

I always felt this way too.
At the time, everyone was sucking BLACK's dick (lol bbc), but it came out right at the tail-end of the BROWNANBLOOM SHOOTANGAEMS trend.
The market was so fucking saturated with generic modern war or WWII FPS games that people were starting to lose distinction between the major franchises (CoD, Battlefield) and the hundreds of third-party FPS games trying to piggyback on the formula.
It looked generic as fuck to me then, and it looks generic as fuck to me now. Sure, it may have polished all of the old staple features of the brownanbloom shooters, and even added leaning or whatever FPS kids cum their pants over, but it was just too late. It was like when WoW came in offering the absolutely most perfect mirror-polished theme-park MMO experience... but the Everquest boat already sailed. I was already playing Ragnarok and looking at other games trying to break the mold. Too bad we regressed instead, and everyone just started trying to copy WoW (the game that got famous by trying to copy EQ).
