I love this game, one of the first I played on DOS. People may think it's an action game looking at screenshots, but it's more like a proto Abe's Odyssey, where you control a mutant that can transform into 3 different types of robots, each with unique abilities, solving puzzles that require each type, unlocking new abilities, etc. The atmosphere and the look of the alien planet is fantastic.

For setting it up with DOS-Box and ScummWM you may refer to this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WumRboSfn90

In case of DOSBox you would do something like this:

General Installation
1) Install Sound Canvas VA
2) Install loopMIDI bc you need an application that the audio plug-in can well, plug into: https://www.tobias-erichsen.de/software/loopmidi.html

Create a virtual MIDI port
3) Launch both loopMIDI and Sound Canvas VA
4) Create a port in loopMIDI for Sound Canvas VA to communicate through, so that DOSBox can recognize and use it.

Finding out the MIDI device ID in DOSBox
5) Launch both loopMIDI and Sound Canvas VA, then run DOSBox
6) Type "MIXER /LISTMIDI" into DOSBox - this will give you the IDs of all available MIDI devices incl. Sound Canvas VA, in this case it's "2" (if a game ever asks, by default MIDI is available on address 330 and interrupt 2)

>Setting up Sound Canvas VA MIDI playback in DOS games
As you probably already know, every new DOS game comes with it's own audio setup and you have several options to get a game to use your new virtual MIDI device. You can:
7a) Run a game's audio setup and choose the corresponding option for background music - remember that Sound Canvas VA is intended for BGM playback, you still want to pick Sound Blaster 16/Pro or whatever for sound effects and voices, or
7b) Use a custom per-game config file (see pic rel) where you specify the audio set up (the highlighted lines in pic rel under the [MIDI] section are all you need to get Sound Canvas VA going), or
7d) Write a general DOSBox config file that is used for all games - I don't recommend this
7c) Set up the corresponding options in your DOSBox frontend GUI of choice

https://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Configuration:MIDI
https://www.dosbox.com/wiki/MIDI_software_devices

All of this might seem like a huge hassle at first glance but you really only have to do go through the first 6 of 7 steps once. After that all you have to do is tell each new game to use Sound Canvas VA for music playback just like you used to tell it to use Sound Blaster 16/Pro before. And make no mistake about it, the difference in quality is enormous.

nah pretty much everyone agrees controls are shit, I got used to them though.
ScummVM is playable except the elevator in level 1 doesn't work for me (seems like it was a resolution problem) and you can't turn while running with the gun out, other than that it's a pretty port.

PSX version is actually more polished, if graphically simplified, controls are extremely similar but feel more tight and easier to work with, also it has the no regret roll.

No regret plays the best, too bad the game was made so much harder with traps and shields everywhere, it's also the prettiest

>> No.8785597

People are gonna deny it up and down, or immediately disqualify the notion of using it because le retroarch hate, but DOSbox Pure seriously owns and you should try it now. The way it handles disc image games and hope you can run games from zip files is fantastic, and has all the usual RA niceties. Per game configs are great for DOS games. Not saying don't use DOSbox-X or that it's inferior or anything. It's great, but give Pure a try these days.

If you're not regularly using RA now, I'm afraid you just don't get it. RA is hardly about the interface, which does kind of smell, but it shouldn't filter you.

DOSbox Pure is amazing. Having the convenience of keys already mapped to a controller when launching a specific title is something I thought would've been impossible for DOS titles. It really is the DOS roms meme.

I hate Dosbox-X because it uses different keyboard shortcut keys from original Dosbox (and Dosbox daum).

Maybe, but it's up-to-date and seems to have everything Daum has and more, with similar flow and interface (certain keys aside)

Fuck Retroarch with a rusty shovel. The UI is garbage whether you want people to ignore it or not. Also it's the only emulator where I've gone in to report a whole class of games were broken on a core, only to have the jackass core maintainer tell me that "nobody plays those anyway," close the issue, and mark it WONTFIX. Thanks a lot, buddy, telling me I'm "nobody" sure makes your project look good and professional.

Most emulator authors have a little pride, but when you're merely porting somebody else's emulator into Master Control Program, I guess shoddy work is A-OK!

I know original dosbox is slow, daum is dead.
But I don't think I need the new features introduced in dosbox-x so I stick with the original and daum (for save states).

Oh, they're dickheads and I have my own grievances with how it works. That said, til every emulator for every system RA supports has all its features or even decent video output without judder, lag, and shitty scaling, it'll have a permanent place on my computer.

I feel like that's the root of all modern tech woes. From Apple's walled gardens and Facebook's monopoly, to the near-universal acceptance of pulseaudio and systemd on Linux.
Fuck that, somebody needs to say "no" once in a while, and just refuse to compromise with shitheels and their shoddy merchandise.

What would that have to do with anything? You're the one who's taking personal offense to me saying that at least some people should say "no" the the shit peddlers even if you don't.
You call me butthurt, but you were the one who started this, being dismissive of anyone not liking retroarch for being "filtered" and not "getting it." An assmad way to describe people who don't make the same choices you do, and one which is only further illustrated by your continued posts in that vein.

Tried it for a bit in late 90s or early 2000s.
Also tried The Magic Candle III and Lord of the Rings II The Two Towers.
The reason I tried those games was because they look like Ultima 6.

Okay. You do that. You make your piddling, impotent stand. Like I said, you probably don't get why one would use it or the features aren't important enough for you to overlook your schizo grievances. Most emu devs are assholes, and it's free to use (not even meme-free where users/info/ads are the product), so I simply don't see the point of refusing to use it on moralfag grounds. You just don't like it, but due to your self-righteous nature it can't just be a matter of taste. I don't give a fuck if it's 'wrong' to use anyway.

>> No.8786461

>>8786401
>you probably don't get why one would use it
I totally get it, I just disagree, for the reasons I already outlined. Go ahead and use it, but don't go around acting like people who don't use it are "filtered" and "don't get it" and other mem shit, because that is where I gotta say "fuck you and the horse you rode in on."

And you were clearly projecting hard when you called me butthurt; it seems like you realize you don't have any principles or convictions, and you're not okay with that, and you're trying to take that shit out on me.
Get over it, you make your choices, I'll make mine. If you feel bad about it, reconsider your choices. Or don't, it's your life. I'm just here to stand up for anyone who doesn't want to use retroarch or applaud their domination of the emulation community.
