If you were in charge of creating the best controller ever and could combine the best aspects of other controllers in it what would you do? I would start with the baseshape of the s-type controller of the original xbox and take the dpad of the sega saturn.

Literally this.
All I want is this pad in xinput with the extra two face buttons as a mirror of the left and right bumpers ala the usb Duke, and a dinput option to have access to all buttons.
It would allow me to play everything on my PC with the right “feel” all in one controller, including N64 (which I don’t love using the right analog stick in placement for the c buttons for)

What exactly is the point of shoving six buttons on the face when the Pro 2 already has two back buttons making up for the lack of face buttons? Only difference to a Saturn controller at this point is you get to use more fingers to press your buttons.

>> No.8779761

>>8779707
Besides grip buttons being retarded every single time they have been tried you mean?
So when you are using something like RetroArch for instance, you can map the inputs for each console/core to be exactly like the console you are emulating.
Six face buttons, d-pad,two analog sticks, and four shoulder buttons allow you to properly emulate:
>Genesis 6 Button
>Saturn
>N64
>MAME Fighters
All with the correct tactile feel in a single controller.
Without six face buttons, you are forced to map to either the bumpers/triggers or right analogue stick, which are all less than desirable compromises.
It is far more stupid to add grip buttons than just an extra two face buttons.

Except that space on the face is limited and just having four face buttons and a thumbstick already require thumb acrobatics. Six face buttons and a thumbstick would be insufferable, and that's why no one offers a controller like that. Im not shilling for chinks, but I'm generally curious as to why people have unwarranted hate for these.
They are OEM snes feel/placement in a dualshock package, something people like myself have wanted for over 20 years. I would go as far as saying the SN30pro is the finest third party controller design ever manufactured and I’ve been playing video games longer than you’ve been alive.
It’s the one good thing the bugs have ever frankensteined into existence, and the build quality is high. I’ve had mine for two years and it gets used at least once a week and it’s functioning like brand new.
I’m not shilling, squash the chinks and down with xi, but it IS a good controller.
What is your argument for why it’s bad? Have you ever used one?

>> No.8779805

>>8779770
Because nobody except your most virgin autist thinks grip buttons are good. I’ve also read that how they are set up on the new SN30 that they are accidentally pressed all the time. If you are playing a fighting game, do you really want to press the grips in a combo?
N64 games map movement to the c-buttons, and replacing that with a right analogue stick does not feel “correct”.
They could increase the surface area of the controller very easily to avoid a cramped area like the dualshock mock-up here >>8778471
I know it might hurt to hear, but six face buttons, two analogue sticks, and four shoulder buttons is the one true path for a do-it-all controller.
The only thing you could do to improve it is put a trackball in the middle but that’s getting into insane territory.

>> No.8779843

>>8779805
If you are this autismal about playing a fighting game you shouldn't be playing with a single thumb on all six buttons anyway, that's not how arcade controls worked.

Also I'm not saying that I find six face buttons inherently wrong, all I'm saying is it's impractical to shove them together with a thumbstick. It's unergonomic. There's not enough movement in your thumb. Unless you have like an N64 solution where you have entirely different grips or at least different hand positions on the same grip to use either the right thumbstick or the six face buttons.

Why not remove the left stick and remap it to the shoulder buttons? Because it's annoying and it doesn't work as well. A whole bunch of N64 games use the C-pad for actual game controls, too. It's absolutely infuriating to try to wiggle a stick up-left-right when you're supposed to be tapping a button, especially if you need to do it quickly.

Same deal with 6-button fighting games. Having to use shoulder buttons for high-low kick is just silly, the game was designed for 6 face buttons.

It actually drove me kind of nuts when I tried, just because the control scheme is of course for button presses. Like my brain expects full camera control with a stick, and instead as you push the strick, there's nothing until you exit the dead zone and then WOOOP 90 degree turn.

>The great thing about the og PSX pad is how lightweight it is.

Fuck I'm glad someone else thinks this. I used the Dual Shock for years and then one day decided to use the original pad and remarked at how lightweight and surprisingly sturdy it was. People will swear it off for fighting games but I think it's great for four button-fighters, as the sticks on the Dual Shock would get in the way for me, the d-pad is better than its given credit for.

Most of them don't need six face buttons, they just need six buttons. And thank fucking god I didn't have to grow up with Bing Wahoo 64 if its control scheme is this fucking retarded.

i use an old grey psx dualshock with a usb adapter, its heavier and feels more solid compared to a ds2 which feels cheap, and the sticks are smoother than a ds3, the sticks on a ds2 r just bad. i also have an og psx analog its bigger which feels better in ur hands, i like the dimpled sticks but u can twist them, which feels unatural compared to other analogs which are fixed, and as far as i can remember they dont click so no L3/R3.

>> No.8783494

In my opinion, I haven't touched a controller better than the DS4 yet.
Dpads are better with separate buttons, not everything together on the outside like everything else
Also I use it connected via USB to my PC. Controllers shouldn't have you worrying about how many hours you can play, games are supposed to be played 14 hours a day

This is the controller I use on my Switch and PS4 and it’s really fucking solid. The battery life is pretty damn good, the d pad feels real nice and the buttons are satisfying to press. Although I’ve heard quality control is a bit all over the place.

How are the buttons on the back? Getting many accidental presses? Thinking of using them for quick save/load when emulating.

I’ve never accidentally pressed them but I think that’s one of the quality control issues people have talked about. For mine there is no way you could accidentally press them. Quick saves and load states what I use them for, can’t imagine using them for anything else. They have a click to them similar to a mouse.

That controller is cheap, has six face buttons and in the video seems reliable enough. It kind of looks like a blank controller ready for customizing. I can make new buttons or a shell for it pretty easily. I can't speak to what others might do with it though.

Based. I got a dual analog for myself, and it's crazy how much better it is. My one and only complaint is that the sticks are plastic, and not rubberized.
