Unless you're someone who writes shaders for a particular set of software and/or hardware,
what's the point of using shaders to emulate the look&feel of a set of hardware on modern consumer electronics bought specifically for state of the art display technology,
as opposed to,
acquiring existing hardware from previous generations?
>inb4 vintage titles have bitmaps designed with crt displays in mind
That's the only valid reason I could rationalize using a shader.

I'll own up to the fact that I did, in fact, partly, answer my own question.
I saw the OP and immediately concluded that a shader for simplistic games are effectively snake oil
since there's no explicit intent from the developers to take advantage of scanline color artifacts to simulate a broader gamut with the game's limited color palette.
Should've worded it in such a way to differentiate the enthusiast that wants the simulated gamut,
and the enthusiast that wants to simulate a lack of prescription lenses - the latter being the most perplexing as it would make more sense to acquire the original hardware if they want their fudge n smudge grudge

Still waiting for a shader that properly captures MY particular bit of nostalgia: Game Boy games being played on the Game Boy kiosk, which consisted of a monochrome TV with a piss yellow-colored plastic screen on top.

For me personally, because I wanted to simplify my life. I wanted to played old games on a big screen, and not have a wall of consoles with a jungle of cables behind it. I just wanted to have the bare minimum to enjoy my hobby the way I wanted. So I sold up all my old games and consoles, and built a nice emulation box with a bunch of usb adapters for controllers.
It's just what makes me happy now. The endless cycle of collecting and perfecting was draining, and my physical possessions ended up making me miserable.

newpixie-crt.slangp with some custom parameters. Thinking about modifying the source files since there's a couple things that bug me still but overall pretty decent.

I've kind of come to the conclusion that CRT shaders just can't replicate the brights that a CRT can put out. Like the whites on a LCD display just aren't bright enough and adding fake glow doesn't really cut it. CRT shaders tend to look more like pictures of a CRT rather than an actual television. Guess I can live with it, though.

Yeah, it's something people are just now coming to realize. CRT shaders have come a long way, but now we're at the point where the displays themselves have to pull their weight. It's become clear what's really needed is having as high a brightness as possible through the use of HDR, and only relatively high-end displays are currently capable of providing the necessary brightness and color gamut to finally begin matching CRTs. From testing, it appears the current best match is QLED displays, as OLEDs have an annoying white subpixel that fucks with mask emulation, and they are also not as bright, which is a shame because they absolutely nail the contrast.

take your rgb out of your super famicom and send the signal to a consumer crt set.
then if you're going for accuracy and have the available system specs- try everything until you get one thats acceptable to you.

emulation does have its shortcomings just like all the rest of it- it may never be perfect

Emulator on modern screen is fine. FINE.
The difference is so negligible. CRTs are pointless nostalgia.

Normally I roll my eyes at CRT shader posts, but these actually look great and make me want to play the game.

these shaders are a hit or miss it seems depending on games. on some it looks horrible but on some games it looks good where its a smaller detail and just smoothing out pixels like
that namefags screens

Increasing the rendering resolution also upscales the shader. You're better off using downsampling/supersampling.
